“overpriced for what you get”
Reviewed May 13, 2013

We had gone for a meeting and booked one night stay before returning to England. The room was averagely size, two beds joined to make a larger double so bed was not very comfy, we could smell dust in the room. The bathroom is so very basic and the bathtub had not been cleaned from previous use, |I actually thought it was scarring from it being old until in the morning when I run the bath and saw the dirt lifting off from the bottom, it was disgusting. One of the wall plugs was hanging, so we couldn't use it to charge the phone.
My husband actually had the back end of the black pudding on his breakfast plate, so he couldn't eat it.

Arrived late, after a long 4 hour journey and was met by a very friendly and helpful member of staff. Room was big, and nicely furnished, and a lovely bath/shower room. However, shower only produced a trickle of water, and sink was not clean, however otherwise room was spotless and bed was very comfy. Stairway was extremely smelly though!!! Went down to the bar for a drink, and again staff was friendly, but then disappeared and sat at reception and did not come back to see if I needed another drink. Ended up just going to bed, and on way noticed 2 staff at front of house, not doing very much!!! A mix between grand and old, and starting to get a bit run down.

On the outside, this hotel looks lovely, large and rustic looking. However inside is a rather different story. We paid about £80 a night for a room - it is not worth this money. I would pay half this for what we actually got. We were also unfortunate enough to be staying at the hotel at the same time as they had a wedding party on - meaning a loud live band filtering up through the floorboards ruining a good night's sleep.
The hotel itself is most definitely old - creaky floorboards everywhere you go. Our door was no less creaky or rickety. Upon entering our room, we found the main window was propped open with a piece of wood - it would not stay open. Ironically the window in the bathroom would not shut - we had to leave it constantly open. We were given no tea or coffee making facilities. Our shower had black mould round the outside bottom, the obvious source being the gaping hole left between the doors which would not shut properly. Hence most of our stay was spent with towels all over the bathroom floor, mopping up shower leakage. This isn't something you should expect your guests to have to do!
Breakfast was decent but on both instances we were told the option we ordered (haddock) wasn't available. The first day we arrived about 20 minutes before breakfast finished so I thought they had just run out. The second day we were one of the first few down to breakfast, and again our order wasn't available! If you can't get the items you advertise on the menu, don't advertise them! They were short staffed in the mornings, we had to wait a while to be seated, eventually seated at a dirty table which took some time to be cleared.

However staff were courteous and friendly at all times, and our room was cleaned daily. It is just that in our opinion given the other hotels we stayed at in Scotland, that this one is very much overpriced for what it actually offers.
