Holiday Inn London-Gatwick Airport
Ranked #2 of 11 Hotels in Horley
Reviewed May 1, 2008

Stayed here for one night recently on business. The staff were good and the food was ok. Overall though, this hotel is really of Travelodge standards and is therefore overpriced, I presume due to the location being close to Gatwick airport.
As for the room, it was a warm night and even though I turned the air con down to 16 degrees it was still very warm so I opened the window meaning that it was very nosy as the hotel is next to a busy road. Reading other comments about rooms being cold in winter I think its very likely that the air con is ineffectual.

Like others, I think charging your guests £10 per night for the pleasure of parking in the hotel car park is disgraceful, especially on top of over-inflated room rates!

Wife and I stayed here overnight before catching a flight from North Terminal at gatwick Airport..
Hotel is clean and comfortable but obviously caters for short term guests. Help with baggage available - but only appeared to one porter - so you may have to wait at busy times. Lifts available if you happy to carry own bags which we are.
Nice restaurant facility and adequate bar area. The buffet breakfast was good value - and food nice and hot where required.
Short taxi ride away are various good pub/restaurants.
The bus service to/from the airport runs every 15 mins and costs £2.50 per person each way. To the airport bus goes first to North then South Terminal, and from the airport starts at South goes to North then stops at Ramada hotel before reaching Holiday Inn - however this is not inconvenient as its on a direct routeing.
Shopping available at nearby Horley or Crawley. If you have more time London 30 /40 mins away by train.

This is not a hugely bad hotel if you just need a short overnight stay before or after a flight. But for the price i would probably recommend finding elsewhere.

I found the room to be quite cold for a start, and the heating system was, to be honest, inadequate for a room of the size we had. It is a fan AC, so if you are unable to sleep easily with background noise such as a fan, you will need to compromise between sleep and heat!

On the subject of sleeping easily, the room i had seemed to be next to a hot-water system or a system of pipes, which kept hissing and fuming whenever someone in one of our neighbouring rooms (and possibly upstairs too?) used their hot water! Again, if you need silence to sleep, consider elsewhere, or ask specifically for a relevent room at reception.

Facilities though were pretty good, bed was comfortable and bathroom was clean and well kept. We also had a sofa and a generaly good TV which kept us updated with live arrival/departure info from the airport which was handy!

Avoid the resataurant at all costs if at all possible. Unfortunately for us we couldn't help but use it, and they definately monopolise on the fact many people are in the same boat. Meal prices are through the roof. £5.50 for one of those small tubs of ben&jerrys ice cream anyone?! and £10 for a burger and chips! I didn't really fancy paying £5 for a round trip to the terminal, but on looking back wish i had now. If you are coming by car or train, FOR GOODNESS SAKE eat before you come, en-route or anywhere but at the hotel itself! The train station is in Gatwick South, so there are loads of good places there.

Reception is usually very crowded. We were lucky and arrived at a quiet time, but it is always busy thoughout the day and night, with very few staff actually helping!

The shuttle bus i suppose is standard with most hotels around the airport. For the price you pay though, it really should be included in your stay. Still, it's cheaper than a taxi, especially to the South Terminal. (be aware taxis charge ridiculous prices. Why? because they can, and people will pay them. Avoid at all costs).

Overall, it wasn't too bad, but i have definately learnt from my mistakes with this stay. The verdict? Sorry Holiday Inn Gatwick, but i won't be staying here again, thanks!

Convenient for the airport, quiet and well maintained. The room was a standard double. It was a cold night and the room felt cold despite turning the heater up to 30degrees. I suspect they wanted us down in the bar! We ordered room service which was fine, if a little expensive for what it was. Thought about trying the mini-bar but couldn't prise it open.

The only drawback was the separate parking charge. £10 for an overnight stay. As if they haven't taken enough of your money in the room rate already.

This is a decent hotel; a fairly typical Holiday Inn. Room was adequate and clean. Service was fine, cost was reasonable. We mainly stayed here because of its proximity to Gatwick Airport, which made it very convenient. Shuttle buses run every 15 minutes, and cost a few pounds.

I spent two nights in this hotel because the hotel my travel agent recommends was full.
The room was large but there were a douvble bed + two extra beds ready for use, so little space for me and no sofa or armchair to sit on...
Access to internet, yes, but 15 £ by day, it is expensive for use only one hour....
And nowhere to plug my laptop, except if I unplug the lamp
It was cold, the central warming central was there only for decoration, the air-conditioning system was inefficient to warm the room, as was the radiator in the bathroom
In the reservation sent by my travel agency, breakfasts and taxes were included in the price, but they charged them.
I stayed with a colleague, both of us paid with their AMEX cards, but nevetrheless they charged extra 950 euros to my VISA card whose number my travel agent gave them a a reservation guarantee.
Now I am trying to get my money back...... As I did not sign any payment order on the VISA card, I hope my bank will return it....
Still one thing, if as me you are obliged to stay in this hotel because the others are full, be cautious with the Express checkout. In small letters at the bottom, it is written that if you do not put a cross in a little square, you allow them to charge your credit card in your own money, using their own conversion rate
