“Relax in beautiful Northeast Kingdom”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

This was our second stay here and it was just as we remembered it. Our room was updated and had views of the lake. There are also many places around the inn to sit outside and enjoy the grounds.
Dinner was delicious and one could have light food or appetizers as well as a full dinner.
Breakfast had many choices and one could have a window seat by the porch and look out at the lake.
There is not much to do here except relax, enjoy the lake (swimming and boating across the street) or drive around and look at the scenery.
The staff was unobtrusive but friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: It is possible to view all the rooms on the inn's website.

As I see here in other reviews, we also stayed in the "Loon" room, which really does need to be updated a bit, it was nothing special. We did get to travel with our Golden, Riley as he was allowed in this particular room. The Inn itself is nice and has a great view of the Lake. I would have preferred to stay in one of the Cabins on the Lake, they look much nicer. The people were very friendly and the restaurant on site was pretty good and very convenient, as there is not alot of other restaurants that are close by. They did have a nice shore area and canoes for you to use. The dog had a blast swimming in the Lake. I'd like to come back and stay in one of the cabins with our kids.

Room Tip: Just don't choose the Loon room, very plain, no pictures, thin rug on the floor, not alot of fur...

Your feelings and those expressed in the September 10th posting regarding to the Loon Room are being taken to heart. We have plans to make changes with Loon this fall. We are likely to replace the queen bed with a king bed, paint the room and add needed pictures. There is little question that the Lakefront and Lakeview Cottages have great appeal at a higher daily rate. Our restaurant schedule will change to Thursday through Saturday evenings on October 18th. We will close the restaurant October 29th through November 14th.

We stayed at the Birches cottage. The location right on the lake was absolutely beautiful. The cottage was comfortable and the sleeping arrangements (one bedroom with queen, the other with two twins) worked out perfectly for us with two college aged sons. The bedrooms themselves were a little small, but this was not a big issue since the living area was nice and we spent most time outdoors. The cottage had a private dock on the lake, which would be perfect for those bringing their own kayaks. We used the Inn's kayaks, available at the common waterfront just a short walk away (no extra charge) It was late in the season, and the kayaks were a little tired, one of them had a fairly significant leak. Also, the sunfish sailboat which was advertised on the web was not available due to an earlier mishap, and that was a disappointment. The kitchen was fully equipped, and we prepared several meals there which then could be enjoyed in combination with the great view. We ate at the Inn's restaurant one night, and the food there was outstanding. We would make a special trip to go back to this unique location.

Thank you for your thoughts about the Willoughvale Inn. We intend to give attention to the waterfront boats when the season draws to a close after Columbus Day. Please come again.

This inn faced a beautiful vista on Lake Willoughby. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the restaurant on site was a great convenience. That said, the room we were in named the Loon room, while clean and comfortable, could have used an upgrade. No pictures on the walls, the carpet was more suitable for an office, and the furniture could only be described as utilitarian. Our son stayed at a new cabin on site that was much nicer when it came to furnishings. That said, most of the accommodations in the area seemed about the same or even a step or two down. Buffet breakfast was included for inn guests, and although I requested skim milk by email in advance, none was provided.

We could not have ask for a nicer place or nicer people to work there. We were close to many great hiking trails and the scenery around the place is beautiful. We got there late because of airline delays and Roy was waiting and helped up get our bags in. The in house restaurant had great food and was reasonably priced.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Osprey Room and it was wonderful.

We stayed at WilloughVale Inn and Cottages during a very quiet time of the year for the Northeast Kingdom. In fact, we were the only two people staying at the facility, cabins and hotel included. When we pulled up to the dark hotel on an even darker road around eleven o’clock PM we wondered if the inn was even open. An exterior light guided us to the main entrance, where Roy, the innkeeper, met us at the door and welcomed us by name. Even though we mentioned that we would be arriving late in our reservation, I’m certain Roy welcomes all of his guests (regardless of the hour) with the kind of warmth and excitement with which he welcomed us. As far as innkeepers are concerned, Roy is a rare gem of the hospitality industry. We felt welcome indeed.

We stayed in the Angler cottage, which is fantastic for two people. The living room is full of windows with a great view of the lake. Comfortable seating surrounds a fireplace, which turned out to be an excellent contingency plan for the inclement weather we experienced. We spent most of the trip reading books by the fireplace, overlooking a lake so gorgeous that even gray clouds and rain did not detract from its beauty. The queen bed is comfortable, and the bedroom has an air conditioner if needed for the warmer summers. The fireplace adequately heated the entire cabin.

If you stay in the cabins I thoroughly recommend stopping at a grocery store about 20-40 miles before you reach Westmore. There are very few places to find food and supplies in Westmore, especially during the off season. We drove up to Newport to get food and something for the grill. The cabin is well outfitted for cooking and dining. We used the grill outside and had lovely meals on the covered and screened porch.

I don’t want to belabor this next point, as it has been made so readily and prominently in a few previous reviews, but the cabins could use extra towels and maybe a few spare rolls of toilet paper in the bathroom cabinets. It is such a minor expense in relation to the possible negative experience to which a lack of it could lead. I’m sure few guests want to trek to the front desk in order to obtain toilet paper, let alone want to write about it in an online review. It was the only thing we needed from the housekeeping staff. But this is a minor concern in relation to our overall experience, which was great.

We look forward to returning to the WilloughVale Inn and Cottages, but next time with our kayaks and bicycles ready to go - rain or shine.

Room Tip: Choose a cabin rather than a regular hotel room during the off season for a great view of the lake a...

Gorgeous views from a pristine cottage that is well designed and decorated, very comfortable, and equipped with every amenity, from a big whirlpool bath to a beautiful kitchen. The lakefront, while rocky, has canoes, kayaks and more, plus a very cool floating trampoline, and lakes just don't get any prettier than Willoughby. It could have been heaven...but it wasn't, and for the silliest reasons. For four adults, we had four bath towels, two face towels, and two washcloths. We ran out of toilet paper because we were given a single roll... each of three days! The pillows and linens weren't bad but were not up to the standards dictated by the price of the cottage. These and other factors amount to being made to feel like a customer rather than a guest.

We are sorry for your feeling that you were a customer rather than a guest. After this posting and one on 8/25 we am not aware of the lack of t.p.in our rooms. While this may not have been the case for you, many of our 4 Lakeview cottage guests do not find the additional 2 sets of towels, hand towels and face cloths in the vanity plus the 2 towel by the Jacuzzi.
