As soon as you walk into the entrance you are welcomed by the smell of log lit fires, antiques and creaking floorboards which throws you back in time. Exploring around the hotel and learning about the history is an enchanting way to spend an afternoon before relaxing in front of the fire place with a tasty afternoon tea or spending time within the health spa. Dinner served in the 16th century restaurant was excellent value for money and drinks in the 14th century bar made a relaxing stay we will not forget.
We stayed in the white room which had a great four poster bed, old styled bathroom with great character running through all of the bedroom which made us want to stay another night. All in all a great stay and highly recommended.

Room Tip: if you want the character and feeling of stepping back in time go for a feature room

My boyfriend and I have just returned from our second visit to the Spread Eagle and our stay this time was as good as the first.

Midhurst is set in the beautiful rolling South Downs countryside. The hotel itself is utterly charming and packed with character - wonky floors, sweeping beams and cavernous fireplaces. The rooms we have stayed in both times have been a total treat with a four poster bed, complimentary cookies and a wonderfully deep bath. The staff are kind and absolutely without pretence - they have always been sincere, friendly and extremely warm without being overbearing.

To spend an afternoon in the lovely spa followed by a glass of wine snuggled next to the huge crackling fire in the lounge is to enjoy complete relaxation. I slept blissfully. Thank you to all at the Spread Eagle for another delightful stay - we will be back!

Recently spent the day at Spread Eagle Hotel where my wife and I enjoyed a very excellent one hour massage and followed that with an hour or so in the Hotel Spa. We stayed for lunch and as usual the service and quality of food was to the usual high standard. All in all an enjoyable experience and so we have booked a repeat in the near future

My husband and I have visited this hotel for 4 years in a row for a January weekend spa break. We were slightly concerned this year as some of the reviews over the last 6 months weren't as positive as our memories. We chose to ignore them and went back this last weekend. We even braved the snow and difficult road conditions and from the moment we arrived, we were reminded why we go back. The carpark was a bit slippery from the constant heavy snowfall first thing on Friday but a very kind chap who works there came out with a shovel and salt to help dig us a path so we could get up the hill (we don't have a 4x4!). Poor him as the snow was coming so fast, he didn't stand a chance to keep it clear. Our room wasn't ready as it was before lunchtime but no problem, we wandered around the corner to a local pub and had lunch. When we got back at 1pm, our room was ready and we had room 25. Previously, we'd had room 3 (I think) which is a lovely big room. Room 25 is a lovely room (bit smaller as 3 is for families), overlooking the courtyard, and perfect for our stay. We headed straight to the spa and received a warm welcome and as we were the only ones there, they happily agreed for us to use the spa robes (normally only if you have a treatment) - this was very nice of them and a bit cheeky for us to ask - but we prefer sitting and reading with them to keep warm. The spa area and pool is by far the nicest we have been to - and very clean. We had tea in our room and love the biscuits in the jar as a sweet touch. Yes, televisions are small and no free wi-fi and not a great mobile signal - bliss for us for a country weekend away!!! We love the fact that the two main gentleman in the restaurant and Sherri in the bar (spelling?) have been there since we first came and are always incredibly nice and make us feel so welcome. The bar area has fabulous open fires. We had dinner included on both nights and it's great how you can choose what you want and pay more if need be, instead of being restricted by a set menu. The food was lovely (best ever crab cakes, velvety soup, perfectly cooked venison, yummy cod, and a warming apple crumble hit the spot). Coffee and petits fours (I'm addicted to the pistachio macaroons) finished off the night. Gorgeous full english both mornings and all day at the spa or reading in our room due to the bad weather - as if we needed an excuse to stay in - housekeeping didn't disturb us once (sign on the door) but kindly left a care package outside our door and when they did see us later that day, asked if we wanted our room made up, perfect service! The bath is nice and deep so had a wonderful hot bath. Any signs of wear fit the ambiance as it's part of a historic building in a country village. We have been to Ockenden Manor but prefer the Spreadeagle and will definitely return - hopefully before next January! It's a perfect place for a relaxing break where you are guaranteed to be looked after.

My husband and I were fortunate enough to have a voucher for a 'lovers pamper day' and we decided to redeem it here and I am so glad we did. We were greeted very warmly and professionally at the spa front desk where we filled in forms and were told the schedule of our visit, we had a while to wait for our first treatment and the pool area looked very busy so we asked if we could move our lunch forward, it was no trouble at all, we were escorted to the front desk of the hotel where the staff took our bags and showed us to the lounge which is a very relaxing, cosy space with a huge inglenook fire place. Horace, the member of staff that took care of us was very efficient and welcoming, he is an asset to the hotel, he really made us feel extremely relaxed and 'pampered'. We ordered hot drinks and they came with really delicious biscuits, I think they were home made, if not, then I would like to know where they bought them! Lunch was delicious and again the service was great. When we had finished our lunch we made our way to the pool where we could relax until our first treatment. The changing rooms are the only complaint we have, they are minuscule! Fine if there is just a few, and I mean 3, people getting changed and unfortunately we had come at a busy time, so it wasn't easy getting everything into a locker and getting into a swimming costume, but it is our only negative. The pool has a seating area and lots of magazines, there is cold water to drink, perfect for after visiting the steam room and sauna. It was clean and modern and a great place to read a book in between treatments. The treatments themselves were good, we both had back shoulders and neck massage and facials and I had a pedicure and my husband had a scalp massage. We were in separate treatment rooms, it would have been a nice touch if we had gone in together as it was a pamper day aimed at couples but it was still very relaxing. All in all the day was near on perfect and I would consider signing up as a member.

This is one of our local favourites. It's an olde-wordle type hotel; this review is about the restaurant in it. The restaurant - and adjacent, very atmospheric bar - is of the wooden beams, huge inglenook fireplaces and blazing log fires that are just the best places to be when the weather takes a wintry turn.
The staff were efficient, friendly and helpful on our visit (the lady who runs the bar is as much a fixture as the pumps; she's been there for 15 years), despite the restaurant being reasonably busy as were a couple of the private rooms.
My wife and I had exactly the same meal - spicy crab cakes, local venison and creme caramel; with a nice bin-end red. I enjoyed a Calvados with our coffees, by the fire in the bar. Lovely evening.
It's not the Savoy, it's not the Fat Duck; it is a really good, best-in-the-area sort of local place that everywhere should have.

This hotel is fantastic. How many hotels can you stay at where there's a document about the building dating back two hundred years on the wall of your room? The old oak beams and sloping floors add to the charm. If you like character, history and romance this place is for you, if you like a modern, square box for your room, this place probably isn't!
The new menu and restaurant refurbishment has made a great improvement and the food is delicious. The staff are helpful and un-stuffy. They helped me choose some great wines which were reasonably priced that I'd probably not had the confidence to choose alone. The breakfasts were lovely with locally-sourced produce in abundance.
The Spa is wonderful and was not busy. I did not have a treatment but some who did said they were great. The pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room are great assets and at this time of year when warmth and light are not features of the British weather, they were most welcome.
All in all, a great stay in a unique hotel. I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Courtyard Room, which was quiet and very well appointed.
