“Great Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2007

I booked our room in advance and was able to get it for around 50 GBP. We flew in from Paris on a Sunday night and were leaving for NYC on Monday morning.

We used the Hotel Hoppa from the airport which was 4 pounds each or over $8 US. for a very short ride. My 15 year old was free. I suspect a cab may have been easier and cheaper as we arrived in terminal 4 and had to go to terminal 3 to get the Hoppa bus. It is a fairly long ride on the tube from 4 to 3. The next morning the receptionist told us we could catch the free city bus across the road from the hotel. This was a much better option, by far and I wish I had printed the details on the city bus before arriving. The city bus drops you at the bus depot area of the airport.

The hallways of the hotel were odd. Designed to look the the clapboards of exterior of a house the look hasn't held up well over the years. The hotel is round and there are two centrally located lifts. Our room was a fairly long walk.

The room had two twin beds and a rollaway. It was very tight with the rollaway set up. The bath was clean and the shower had good pressure. There were very nice towels, best of our 12 day trip. The room was very clean and had no off odors.

The room had the usual tea and coffee making supplies and ample toiletries. The internet access for 24 hours from the room was 15GBP or over $30. I only needed to check on my flight status so I opted for the 15 minutes for 3 GBP option in the bussiness center in the lobby. Breakfast was expensive also so we got food at the many shops in the airport.

For the price it was a great deal. I don't know if I'd use the hotel for other than an early morning flight from Heathrow because of its location so far out from London.

For the price I paid (£64 on the internet, single B&B) I was impressed. The room wasn't big but plenty big enough for a stopover. Smart, including desk + chair, en-suite with bath, everything immaculate. Extras are expensive, e.g. £9 if you want to watch a movie, but if you're travelling and just want somewhere to rest up then this place is excellent. If you're looking for a cheap internet deal, don't be put off by the "Expensive shoebox" review below.

As a single on a business trip to the area for a week I was unfortunate to land at this hotel....as a single I was given a tiny inside room - approx 5x8 ft....a refurb had been badly attempted...gluing 2x4in strips of wood to a ripped out door frame doesnt make a good refurb. I asked to be moved to a larger room but was refused. Bedding & bathroom were clean. Food expensive & very basic......the steak was good, but if you have to stay here eat elsewhere. The restaurant & cleaning staff were very friendly - the receptionists were not.

We stayed here for 1 night as we had an early flight.
The receptionist was extremley helpful and welcoming.
Good sized modern room with all the usual facilities.
Had drinks and food in the bar which was again modern and the staff very effient.
Alarm call on time and cab waiting.
With up to 8 days parking all for £90.00 I thought it was great value!
I paid double that with no parking at the Radisson in november and enjoyed this far more.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night prior to flying out of Heathrow, and we found it to be a really comfortable place to spend the night.

On arriving, we were told that we were being upgraded to an Executive room on the top floor, and we thought the room was lovely. It was quite small, but had a huge king-size bed, was nicely decorated and felt really cosy. We also had a good view looking out over the Heathrow runways, which we enjoyed looking out at! We booked our room directly through the website, and while I do think that it was a bit pricey, the fact that it was so comfortable means that we had no problems paying what we did. It also seemed to be one of the cheaper options for a hotel near Heathrow, so taking that into account, it's definately worth it.

As we were only in the hotel for around seven hours, we didn't get a chance to try the restaurant, so I can't comment on that. As for the staff at check-in/out, they were very polite despite looking rushed off their feet, so no complaints there.

We took the Heathrow Hoppa to and from the hotel, mainly for convenience, and while it was far too expensive, it arrived promptly and got us to the terminal quickly, so I recommend it as long as you don't mind paying so much for a ten minute bus ride!

Next time we have an early-morning flight, I am sure we will stay in the Ariel hotel again. It was a very comfortable and pleasant place to spend our last few hours on land before an 11 hour flight, and we were very pleased with our choice.

The Ariel is something of a local landmark (I grew up near Heathrow) so it was interesting to stay at the round hotel next to the airport that I've passed so many times at long last.

We booked late, and directly with the hotel, so we probably didn't get the best rate we could have done if we'd booked earlier, and I have to say that the rate we paid was quite high - any higher and I'd've said it was poor value. However, what we wanted was a hotel near to the airport where we could crash as soon as we arrived after an overnight flight and not have to complete our journey home there and then. The Ariel fitted this bill perfectly - our request for an early check-in was honoured without any problems, and whilst we had had to book a smoking room we were able to get a non-smoker (a twin, but that was no problem) when we checked in.

We ate at the hotel that evening. A buffet which was not cheap but was fine, and we had booked ahead for the breakfast buffet the following morning and that was good too.

The room looked a little battered at the edges, surprising if the hotel has just been refurbished as other reviews mention, but was spotlessly clean with all the amenities working properly. The soundproofing of the hotel was excellent - you'd never know you were right next to the Heathrow perimeter, and the beds were very comfortable - we slept very well.

I'd agree with other reviewers who criticise the high price of the Hoppa hotel shuttle. My wife left before me to get to work, and she heard the bus driver (after she'd paid and boarded) direct some people to the free bus stop just over the road. The hotel does not mention this at all - just directs you to use the Hoppa.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable beds.
  • Disliked — Not cheap
  • Tips/Secrets — See if you can find the free bus to the hotel - supposedly there is one!
