“Very clean and a TOP breakfast”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

Stayed with my son for 1 night, to see The Grand National at Aintree. Had 2 breakfasts and they were as good as any i've had, the reception was nice and clean and the room was ok. The online cost was slightly less than the hotel price. The main train station was about 10-12 minutes walk away.

Room Tip: Ideal for a weekend away, with Wetherspoons and other better eateries within a walking distance. On...

I have stayed at the Dukes several times before and always very happy with basically everything, from the owner, the staff, the rooms and the breakfast.

It has now been taken over by a new owner and as far as i can tell has not got a clue how to run things, the only saving grace was that the previous owner (john) is still working there and made our stay the best he could.

I was on the top floor and remember a lovely black and white carpet going up the stairs, but now it has this horrible pink carpet which looks like it was taken out of a bin is some back ally. Also what has happened to the lounge i will never know, just some random furniture instead of comfy sofas and a tv to relax after breakfast.

so all in all John and Jimmy where the best thing about the hotel, they also cooked breakfast which was lovery, but as long as the new owner is running the business in this manner i am affraid i will not be returning.

p.s the amazing Roman Man has GONE! to be replaced by an UGLY bust.

We run a pub and stay in hotels for one night a week as often as we can to chill out. Arrived in Southport and visited a few hotels to checkout rooms before the Dukes Folly. We were shown a choice of rooms and they were far superior in quality and clenliness that what we had seen so decided to stay. We had arrived late morning so the room had to be made ready so went did some shopping, had lunch and returned. We had the Castle themed room, it was lovely and warm, spotless bedding and towels & well stocked tea & coffee what could you ask on a frosty winter night. We went out for dinner to Mexican restaurant on return had a couple of drinks and a chat with John. Went to bed had fantastic nights sleep, rose and went down to have one of tthe best full english that we've
had for ages. We will definatley be back soon.

Room Tip: Castle room is very spacious and has a bath with shower tap.

Always made to feel welcome. Superb breakfast to set you up for the day. Great choice of drinks at the bar at very reasonable prices. John, Jim and the team really can't do enough for you and it makes you want to return year after year. The themed rooms are fun and are always clean.

As a couple we stayed for 2 nights and was glad we hadn't booked for longer.
Although the location of this hotel is very good for shops, restaurants, showground, promenade etc. the hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired.
Our room was a poor standard with rotting window frames. The bathroom was very small with shower curtain over the bath. All very tired and dated.
Couldn't sleep with the window open as it was rattling and caused the door to rattle too and we were on the main road which was quite noisey.
No complaints with the staff as they were very helpful and friendly.
The breakfast was average...a bit tasteless if I'm really honest.
The whole hotel is in need of an overhaul and judging from our experience I would not recommend.
Be warned the parking area is very small so if you don't time it right then you'll have to pay for main road metre parking. I believe there is some parking available at night over the road a short walk away at the church car park but still not ideal when it's lashing down.

We just had a brilliant weekend at the Dukes Folly. The breakfast was amazing. Thanks to John & Peter who made the weekend, we met a lovely couple of which we are staying in touch with. There was a Honda gold wing rally which was nice, they had a parade on the promenade and Lord street and a spectacular light show. We have booked to go back.

Lovely breakfast. Friendly staff... Our room was average. Such a shame. It was for our anniversary and although it was VERY clean it was just a little tired and boring. I can't comment on the other rooms though, we didnt get a theme room or anything so I presume they are much nicer. There was no coffee or milk on arrival but the lady came straight away and was so so polite and apologetic, I really cant fault the staff. Again a real shame and I feel awful saying it was average but it was the room for me that brought it down. The location was excellent, parking was available for us, it did mean blocking each other in but we were greatful that it had parking included. The bed very comfortable also... Please dont be put off by my average review because as long as its clean etc for that price its worth it.

Room Tip: Maybe choose a theme room, they maybe nicer.
