Best Western Southport Seafront Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa
Ranked #11 of 23 Hotels in Southport
Reviewed July 10, 2012

My daughter & son-in-law recently had her wedding at the Clifton, we were in the Belvedere suite. I cannot praise them enough, nothing was too much trouble. I booked by phone and my daughter was given a free upgrade to the bridal suite room 125. The room was fantastic, we were in room 249 and it was lovely. It is true the hotel is old, but this adds to the atmosphere. Somebody described it as being on the titanic. I would like to mention Clifford who was with us all night and really looked after the newly weds, he was very good and attentive.
We had a meal the night before in the Conservatory bar, and the food was disgusting, everybodys meal was awful and practicaly inedible. Which was a pity as it let the hotel down and upset the bride to be, so I would suggest going somewhere else to eat. The food for the wedding breakfast was very good as well as the cooked breakfasts
The bar prices were very reasonable for a hotel and they also had real ale which pleased the men.
It is very central with free parking, all in all we had a wonderful time and thought the hotel was good. If you want modern facilities then you shopuld go to a modern hotel, but personally I think they lack character and warmth
Our room was quiet, unfortunately a lot of the rooms were very noisy due to local nightclubs and people could not sleep. Some people complained and they were moved

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view on the 3rd floor

A celebratory weekend and although the food was good it was spoilt by a rude offensive waiter in the Pavilion Restaurant. The bedroom was clean and spacious although if you are over 6 ft. don't stay on the top floor as the beams are rather low and you could end up with a stoop.

Room Tip: Due to low beams don't ask for a top floor

Last minute on the day stay. Although there were two weddings and a 21st birthday party, the very helpful reception staff offered a quiet room and allowed us to see it first. The room was very quiet as regards other guests/party noise. Overlooked the main road with lovely lake/promenade view and traffic was quiet at night. Room was spacious and clean with comfortable bed but very dated with small round screen telly, pink bathrom from the sixties and very old worn blanket on the bed. Bar was reasonable priced and the meals looked reasonably priced although we didn't eat at the hotel. Breakfast was poor as no cold plates of meat/cheese and no breads or croissants. Poached eggs that I ordered were like bullets. Health club was nice although jacuzzi and pool were not very warm and the steam room was not working. Can't really complain too much as we got a very cheap rate with breakfast and spa included.

Room Tip: Second floor facing seafront towards the north of the promenade seemed to be away from the functions...

My son was married at the Clifton on 23rd June 12. They had the Balmoral Suite and I really couldn't praise everyone enough. The efficiency of the staff in turning the room round was excellent. It was spotlessly clean and when a drink was spilt in the evening they very quickly mopped it up for us. The meal we had for the wedding breakfast was beautiful. Everyone has commented on how quickly it was served and how hot it was - not always easy when mass catering. I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel for anyone thinking of getting married in the future.

This is the second time we have stayed at the royal Clifton hotel, and I must say it was as good as the first! The room we had was great very big and with fantastic views over the lake... Pwe had a really nice meal in the hotel restaurant and the staff coud not do enough for us. We did not get chance to try the health club & pool but we went to have a look at it looked very very nice.
Our breakfast was fantastic lots of choices for us on the fruit section and the cooked breakfast was great & hot!
We will be booking to stay at the royal Clifton hotel again in the future... (in a front room)

Room Tip: If you can book a front room they are bigger and the views are fantastic!!

I stayed at the Clifton because I had an early morning start 9am attending a seminar at the exhibition centre on the esplanade. I had dinner bed and breakfast which I could not fault, but my room was at the back of the hotel and above a function room where people were standing under my window until 1.15 am having a smoke which I found unacceptable. When functions are on I suggest that rooms guest's are allocated rooms at the front of the hotel away fromthe function rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel!

The hotel itself is in dire need of a face lift and some air-conditioning. The restaurant food is overpriced for what is served and the staff are a joke, being rude and completely ignorant of how to wait on tables; minimum wage, minimum effort. We could have paid a lot less to be insulted! If it were half the cost, we still would not go back there.
