“Friendly but could do with updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2011

My partner and I stayed at the Southcliff for one night, midweek, in June. The Southcliff is located 5 minutes to the west of Tenby town centre on a back street that leads to the awe inspiring South Beach.

The Southcliff Hotel, which I would agree with another reviewers comment is actually more of a B&B, is a comfortable and quiet place to stay and it offers one of the best cooked breakfasts that I have ever had. I personally think that it could do with a bit of a freshening up and a facelift as some of the decor is a little tired and chintzy, but this clearly does not detract people from staying there.

The hotel owners were very friendly, but I found them a little nervous to interact with us as a younger couple in comparison to the older couples staying there the same night, whom they seemed incredibly friendly towards.

The room we stayed in was quiet, small and at the rear of the hotel overlooking the road. The beds were very soft (not a preference for me as I suffer from back pain) and the bathroom was incredibly clean. I would have preferred to find a tiled or lino floor in the bathroom rather than a carpet as i find this more appropriate and hygienic in a hotel/B&B, but it was quite clearly very well cleaned none the less.

Tenby itself is a real gem of a location and is full of childhood memories of family days out in the sunshine. I would be first to say that Tenby could rival St Ives for excellent location, eating out and FANTASTIC beaches. South Beach is truly magnificent in its pure scale, Castle Beach is great for families and Harbour Beach is a beautiful retreat with a wonderful view of the harbour itself. For a real treat I would recommend getting the boat over to Caldey Island to visit the abbey (only men are allowed inside) and to sample its own secluded beaches.

We were only in Tenby for one night, but on searching for a good place to eat we chose The Mews Surf Bar & Grill, on Upper Frog Street in a small courtyard next to the bright orange Coach & Horses pub, where we both agreed we had one of the best meals out we have ever had. I would highly recommend sampling the food here as it was fantastic value, excellently cooked and the service we received was fantastic. The sword fish is to die for and the portions are extremely generous for what you are paying.

All in all the Southcliff Hotel is comfortable, well located and very accommodating. It is excellent value, especially considering it is 100 metres from the sea front where you will find the overpriced establishments bartering with their sea views.

Myself and my husband stayed here for 4 nights at the end of Aug,we were very impressed at how the hotel is run, very friendly staff, could'nt do enough for you. Also the owners, Brian and Pam are very lovely people and run a beautiful hotel, nothing was too much trouble for them, very helpful.
The rooms are lovely, very clean,in fact they are SPOTLESS...Towels changed daily,so is the bed linen.Tea and coffee in the rooms, also a flat screen tele.
But best of all was the Fabulous Breakfast...There was a choice...form filled in the night before (which is what we love) Full cooked English..Bacon,sausage,mushrooms,tomatoes,beans and a choice of what egg you want.Thats without the variety of fresh fruit to start and cereal, and Porridge,Never seen so much tea selection like it before..albeit..my fav was there, coffee also, and as much toast as you like. What do you think..... WE WILL BE BACK. 100%.... Oh i forgot to say you can also have Continetal brekkie...that is lush too.x

I think the hotel web page is a little miss representative. This is really a B&B. It is a good B&B, clean and the staff are fantastic and could not do enough for you. Breakfast was great - but you have to preorder the previous evening. The rooms a re clean but have differnt aspects so check what you are getting. We were in room 11 which was sold as a family room, but with two kids you can barely get to the bathroom from the bed. Also you cannot see the TV from the single bed (much to my sons dissapointment). Also the wifi does not seem to reach the top floor (rooms 9,10,11). Room 11 does give a GREAT view of fireworks every sunday in August if you are stuck in at 10.15. There is a guest lounge and if you want to drink a can of carling in your nan's front room you will be very comfortable. It is two floors away from room 11 so too far for us to pop out and leave the kids. Room 3 I think is adjacent though. The hotel has a lovely play room for kids, large bright and clean, spoiled only by the thick cloud of airfreshener.

I know this sounds negative and although it is all true it is not very fair. Breakfast was lovely with the biggest selection of tea ever. The staff are so nice to kids - baby wipes are provided at the table, hot milk at night and they can give you a princess plastic plate or a thomas one depending on which the kids want! If I had been expecting a B&B I would have been very happy.

Parking wise you can unload outside then turn left and park in the public car park. Pay per visit or for several days (£20 per week), it is worth it because there is not much driving in Tenby!

Room Tip: lower floors have wifi, ask if you have a bath or shower and if they are en suite or not

We have just returned from a summer break, of which 3 nights were spent at the Southcliff. It was my first stay at the Southcliff, but my wife had stayed there several times before with her family when she was younger. Pam and Brian were very friendly and helpful and couldn't have done more for you. We don't have any children but from what we saw families and children are very well catered for, Pam in particular was very attentive to children and I believe she used to be a children's nurse.

The hotel is clean and well maintained, it is a 3 floor terraced home less than 30 seconds from Tenby's golden sandy South beach. Our room was well appointed and nicely furnished with lots of places to put your belongings and a nice morden en-suite. Double glazed windows, and you could just about see the sea from ours! The bed was a nice comfortable double and we both slept very well.

There was a large first floor residents lounge with TV and sofas (and a nice old piano), This was in addition to the TV in your room.

Breakfast was a very well organised affair, in your room were tick sheets that you handed in the night before with your main breakfast choices. In addition there was endless tea, coffee and cereals to which you could help yourself and a plentiful supply of toast as required.

Parking outside is restricted to local residents passes only and there were parking wardens about issuing tickets. However, time was permitted on the double yellow lines outside for loading/unloading. Just 30 secs walk across the road is a large car-park (which is owned by the local church) We could see our car from our room and we paid just £15 for 72 hrs parking!

Hotel is 5 mins stroll to town walls and an array of shops cafes and resturants. We had a lovely time and would recommend the Southcliff to anyone!

Room Tip: Room 6 has a bay window which overlooks the front.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at the Southcliff. Pam and Brian extremely welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. The whole hotel was spotlessly clean and very organised. The playroom was brilliant for our son. Breakfast was delicious and plenty available to suit all tastes. Would definitely recommend as location was so convenient to all amenities.

Our second visit to the Southcliff, and it was just as enjoyable as the first.
Pam and Brian are wonderful hosts (Brian is an encyclopedia of knowledge of the local area!). The high standards we found on our first visit were exactly the same.
Thoroughly recommended, especially for families with young children.
