“Restaurant let down by unavailable items and small quantities”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

We ate here on two occasions recently; the restaurant is light and airy and very pleasant. However when we came to order there was quite a list of things they had sold out of, including the three fish meals on the specials board. We were told they had to order their fish on a Tuesday and had to guess what to order. Undeterred we ordered two lamb shanks and one beef and ale pie. The lamb shanks were excellent as was the pie, but the meal was let down by the very small amount of new potatoes and vegetables provided. On this occasion it didn't matter so much as there was plenty of meat to compensate. We decided to return a few days later; this time we were all able to order fish from the specials board - very reasonably priced at £10.95. Again we ordered new potatoes and vegetables. This meal was very poor - the fish portions were small (possibly in relation to the price), one portion of salmon being much smaller than the other, and this together with the small amount of potatoes and vegetables left us feeling very dissatisfied with the size of our meal, and needing to order a substantial sweet to fill us up. The service on this occasion was also pretty bad and during the time we were there two lots of people walked out without ordering. Again we heard people being told that items on the menu weren't available, particularly the fish, and again we heard the same excuse of having to guess what to order! (Don't all restaurants have to "guess" to some extent?!). On both occasions the profiteroles were off the menu.

The standard of food was good, but was badly let down by small portions of vegetables and the amount of items not available. Having seen other recent reviews describing "loads of freshly-cooked vegetables" we cannot understand why we didn't receive such quantities, not on one but two occasions.

Proprietors - please note and do something about it!! We didn't come back again as there were plenty of other places to eat; this was a shame and could be easily remedied by you!

We thank your for taking the time to write a review, all customer comments are important to us and all critical comments are taken very seriously.
We receive fish deliveries on a Tuesday and a Friday and order what we think will be just enough, based on previous weeks, however sometimes we sell out a little quicker. Most other items on the menu are delivered daily (except for Sundays) and again we try to order just enough so that we ensure the food we are cooking is freshly delivered that day. We have 16 main course choices plus the fish on the special board, so feel that if one or two things run low we still have quite a large menu to choose from. However we do understand that if your first choice is unavailable it can be disappointing and will take your comments regarding this on board.
We wish you had asked for more vegetables and potatoes as there are always plenty available and we would have been more than happy to send out extras if asked.
We are very sorry your experience with us wasn't a good one and assure you that your comments are much appreciated.

Just spent four nights at the New Overlander located just outside Tenby. Karen & Andy are welcoming hosts and can't do enough to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The hotel is about a mile and a half outside Tenby but you can walk into town along the beach in about twenty five minutes. There is also a taxi service located next door and a train that goes to Tenby every two hours from the station about 100 yards away. We had a lovely time but I would rate the hotel no more than 3 star as there was no proper area for residents and the TVs are in real need of an upgrade. The price we paid for B & B was at the top of the range for what was on offer.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear can suffer from noise from the railway which is directly behind the hotel.

My family and friends have been eating at the New Overlander for some years now. Usually Sunday lunch, but we have had a few evening a la carte meals too. Ate there on Sunday 2nd June 2013. Beautifully cooked beef, luscious lamb and perfect pork were on the menu that day. There were loads of freshly-cooked veggies to accompany the meat. Dessert was also scrummy! My favourite Sunday lunch destination in and around Tenby!

We have stayed in the Overlander many times in the last 4 years and can not wait to re-visit with friends in July. It is small, friendly and clean and the Breakfasts are to die for. The Proprietor Andy is hysterical and very friendly and obliging, even buying me a birthday drink on my 50th. The rooms are cleaned daily ansd althiough it is next to a train railway track it does not keep us awake. Location is not far from Tenby, but a taxi service owned by the hotel is nextdoor and you are given guest discounts. See you in July regards Norman Ward and Sarah from Swansea.

Room Tip: All rooms are similar but the ones at back are a bit quieter away from road.

We weren;t staying at the hotel but stopped by for a meal (party of 8) which was so good we came back a few nights later.
The lady chef / owner was very friendly and accomodating as was a waitress on the first evening who was up for an exchange of banter.
Great value and the Lamb shanks were worth preordering to make sure they had enough to meet our needs.

Stayed here for one night, the room was spotlessly clean in fact the whole building is spotlessly clean, small but comfortable bedroom, good parking area and not far from Tenby (Taxi around £7), the only thing was the owner/chef, a very nice man until he starts drinking, twice we have stayed at the Overlander and twice the same thing has happened, this time we saw him cleaning a table down and drinking some left over wine! then it was drink after drink! then the loud and embarrassing shouting from the kitchen area! a real shame as this is a lovely little place which is loved and well cared for.
