“Never again!!”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We stayed here for two nights and thank goodness it was just the two!!
Only thing missing was Basil Fawlty!
Food was ok, staff friendly.
We had a baby with us and they seemed to think it was ok for our room to be at the top of the house with 7 flights of stairs! Unacceptable!
The highchair they provided did not fasten so my baby would of fallen through. Again, unacceptable.
Apparently recently refurbished.... WHERE?!
Lovely location with plenty to do, but my advice would be find a better hotel!

I would like to give a good review of this hotel because the staff where very nice but I can,t there where too many problems straight away we didn,t have a family room even though it had been comfirmed weeks before,we where put in a double room with no bed for our grendaughter which was supposed to be the best room in the hotel,i,d hate to see the worse, ten minutes later we where moved into a family room that looked no different but there was only towels for two so we had to ask for another, this happened every day,the cleaning was none existing the toilet never got cleaned ands there was no toilet brush and the sink or surfaces where never cleaned. The meals where basic but tasty but the dining room was very cramped, the drinks where priced differently every night, the hotel needs a feferb, its a shame because the staff where very nice.

Room Tip: ask for the best room,i hope you stay in it longer than us.

Hotel is very basic, dated and needing a good clean, rooms were quite dull and a bit grubby, a notice on the wall asking you to use your towels sparingly! (in the middle of the summer heatwave !) no light bedding available just heavy blankets, ok sheets were clean.
Food was disgusting and at times inedible, menu consisting of pork and stuffing, chicken and stuffing, and the best:- roast turkey and stuffing all served with roast (burnt) potatoes, and veg- only thing missing was the Christmas decorations ( we were there in July). Complaints to staff/manager went unheeded. Ended up eating out the rest of our stay.
Hotel might be ok for the festive season but not in the summer months.
Ilffacombe is a beautiful town set in a beautiful area, we will be back to the area but not to the Grosvenor Hotel

Room Tip: Not sure if there is a good room as some other guests were not entirely happy with their accommodati...

We got an amazing deal on this hotel so weren't expecting great things. But the room is a good size and clean but in need of an overhaul as is the rest of the hotel. It is like its set in the 1960's or 70's. I keep expecting basil fawlty to turn up! The food is adequate even if a bit mass produced but the location of the hotel is excellent. Our room does smell of gas though so I am writing this on the first night just in case ...........!

Now lets talk facts, this hotel is dated, some rooms are not up to scratch but, the staff are helpful and very friendly, the rooms are clean and your not going to get food better in a 5* hotel. We have just come back from a 3 night stay where we were entertained each night, we had enough choice of food to please even the most pickiest of quests, they should hang on to the chef cos he can cook!, I would be more than happy to stay at this hotel again,it's location could'nt be better and they will cater for disabled customers.people who leave bad reviews on trip advisor have access to photo's, I don't understand why they have to make hotels lives hard when all they have to do is go else's where!

I booked this hotel with a discount voucher, so got a really cheap deal and had no great expectations. On the telephone when making the initial booking the staff were very helpful and on arrival we were given a warm greeting by reception staff. The room was actually much better than expected or hoped for and had plenty of storage and an en-suite that was admittedly ready for an update, but clean. The deal we got included an evening meal and two breakfasts and again our expectations were low, but the food was adequate and good value for the price we paid. (Though there was rather too much emphasis on fried bread for me.) The choice of meals at dinner were cod in parsley sauce, (fried) bread salad or chicken breast on a 'quart of fried bread'. I had the chicken (minus the fried bread) and the portion size was big enough to share half with my husband who had ordered the bread salad just to see what it was! The vegetables were fresh and cooked to perfection. Breakfast offered a decent enough range of choices including a full English and although the porridge was a let down the chef redeemed himself with my perfectly poached egg on toast.
Ilfracombe is an old fashioned Victorian seaside resort and many shops and hotels were empty and the place had a look of having seen better days, but the people we met were all friendly and I would visit again - and at the same price would also be more than happy to stay at the Grosvenor.
There is free wi-fi in seating by the reception area.

It was with some trepidation that we set off for our weekend away, having read other visitors' reviews and having spoken to friends who had visited previously. However, we have to say - they were wrong ! Yes, the hotel is old, but it has all the character and charm of a victorian hotel, and the staff were absolutely delightful. Nothing was too much effort, and everyone was extremely warm and welcoming. Our room was cosy, but was extremely clean and there were no broken handles, missing lightbulbs, or any indication of poor maintenance/housekeeping. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of storage and a lovely en-suite which looked to be a fairly new addition with a super power-shower.
The dining room was a bit crowded, but as this hotel caters largely for coach groups, this is to expected. We were given a table to ourselves, and the service was fast, efficient and friendly. The breakfast had been pre-prepared, we believe, as it arrived some 5 seconds after ordering! Having said that, the full english was lovely, and the egg was even soft! Dinner was a pleasant surprise - we had steak and ale pie, which was absolutely delicious! The steak was extremely tender, and it was really nice to have a proper "home made" pie for a change!
The hotel is in a wonderful location, five minutes wander to the Tunnels (well worth a visit), and a five minute stroll to the high street, and a ten minute wander to the harbour. Ilfracombe itself is a lovely little town, and the new theatre is worth a visit, as is the harbour.
There are plenty of pubs and restaurants around, but to be honest, the food in the hotel was more than good enough !
The entertainment at the hotel was rather boisterous, with the volume being somewhat high, but thankfully this stopped at about 11pm each night. I think this was more noticable to us than to other guests, as our room was directly above the ballroom which is used for the evening entertainment.
Lovely little touches in the hotel, like an honesty box for the newspapers, games and books etc in the sun-room.
All in all a lovely hotel in a lovely town. We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the ballroom as the evening entertainment is quite loud.
