“Well positioned friendly hotel”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

Like VDP283 have just returned from just go long weekend at the Grosvenor. We found it comfortable and friendly. For the budget price paid it was excellent value. The upgrade was well worth it as we had a large room(suite) which was recently refurbished. It was warm and comfortable considering the bitterly cold weather. Fantastic walks over the hills to both Lee and Hele Bay direct from the hotel and very handy for the harbour, shops and local pubs. (The ship and pilot very friendly and many real ales to choose from)
We had read the reviews and were expecting a nightmare but although in need of a bit of updating (a duvet would have been nice) we were pleasantly surprised. Food basic but well cooked and hot. Poached eggs at breakfast perfection. Waitress very attentive and hard working.

Room Tip: Upgrade to suite, large shower and nice outlook to front of hotel

OK, so this isn't a five star luxury establishment, but that's not what it's trying to be !
The Grosvenor IS warm, friendly and welcoming with a convenient central location in beautiful Ilfracombe.
There's plenty of food, not gourmet, but wholesome (not horse-some ! LOL) with choice on the set venue and A La Carte options available.
We've been going for over 5 years (as a family) and they're particularly good on high days and holidays, like Christmas, New Year and Easter.
The nightly entertainment is a bit hit and miss, but the oldies seem to enjoy it and there's always an opportunity for a bit of 'Dad dancing' to embarrass your children.
So, set realistic expectations especially given the price and you'll have a great time :-)

We have just returned from a hoilday with Just Go at this hotel and we had a lovely break. The hotel is Victorian and is in need of some TLC in places but it is still comfortable. We paid for an upgrade and got a nice big room with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space and, even taking that into account, the cost was really good value for money. We were surprised that the beds had blankets - not duvets - but, in saying that, they were very clean and warm! All the staff were very friendly and helpful and we couldn't believe that there was an 'honesty box' to pay for the daily papers. How's that for trusting people? The food was varied, well cooked and of a high standard and our waiter, Francis, was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and we were never kept waiting even though he was busy! The hotel is in a perfect position and it is not far to walk to the front or the harbour. We had read some of the bad reviews prior to going and are of the opnion that they must have stayed somewhere else beacuse we never had any problems. We certainly wouldn't hesitate to return.

Room Tip: Pay extra for an upgrade room

This is the most depressing, miserable hotel I have ever stayed at in britain. It is dirty, rooms are awful, there is no feeling or warmth. Apart from a chirpy barman from michegan the staff are rude and unhelpful. The food is disgusting, you get better in a homeless shelter. This hotel is a total holiday wrecker-avoid it! Go somewhere else. Try the imperia or osbornes next door. Do not subject yourself to utter misery. It's nasty!

We have just returned from a KGB deal to the Grosvenor Hotel we stayed for two nights - the room was ok, one gripe was the shower was hand held it needs a hook on the wall to attatch it to. That said I thought it was extremely clean and decorated well for the hotel it is - an OLD VICTORIAN HOTEL . The food could have been more imaginative - and the breakfast sausages were very very cheap - and not very nice................The staff and owners were very friendly and helpful...........and I do really think that for the price we paid we had a good deal.

Thanks John and Valerie Powell 17/03/2013

We went to this hotel on a Groupon deal and were not expecting too much as it was very cheap. The hotel is like something out of Phoenix Nights and the majority of the guests seem to be on coach trips. Staff are helpful and pleasant, the hotel was warm and breakfast satisfactory. Parking is the biggest problem as there are only 6 spaces and these seem to be taken at all times. You can only park for two hours outside the hotel so potentially you could be moving your car every couple of hours. The first room we stayed in had a leaking ceiling so this kept me awake and the second room was very small and the shower did not attach correctly. However, the room was clean and as I said before it you pay very little you really can't expect too much.

staff were very helpful; just a pity for them to have to work in this hotel. god knows how long iot had been since the carpet under the bed was cleaned and the same was true forone of the cups and one of the glasses in the room .

breakfast was ok but why bother with a menu when so much is unavailable: no kippers, no gammon, no prunes, no woman, no cry.oh no the last two are a bob marley song but you get the point. the poor waitress seemed to spend her time apologising for what were surely oversights on someone else's part; i mean, fancy not stocking up.

we got this cheap so it felt churlish to complain but don't pay full whack to stay here.

(and is letting one's dog foul the footpath obligatory in ilfracombe? haven't seen so much dog poo in years!)

Room Tip: go somewhere else!
