“Wouldn't go back.....”
Reviewed June 3, 2012

We booked this hotel last year as a Groupon deal and despite reading the horrendous reviews we checked in with open minds.

Oh dear....

To be fair the guy on reception was extremely helpful and friendly and we couldn't fault his customer care qualities. On seeing our room I was totally speechless with horror, we have stayed in many hotels rooms in the past few years and I can honestly say this was the worst ever. Shabby wasn't the word for it - I think seedy would be more appropriate. The furniture was damaged, the walls cracked with plaster falling off. The only good thing was that it was clean. We complained and managed to change rooms to number 348 (we were in 225 before) this was much better but still nothing to write home about. No radio in either room and the TV in the second room only showed 2 snowy channels.

Breakfast was average but we did have quite a long wait on the first day to be seated, luckily our waitress was very friendly and helpful so no complaints there.

On one occasion we had to ring the reception bell 5 times before my partner decided to nudge the American guy working behind the bar who totally ignored our ringing.

Ilfracombe has some lovely restaurants for which we will leave separate reviews. If you get the chance to walk the cliffs go for it it was fantastic as was the weather.

I know the upkeep on a place the size of the Grosvenor is astronomical and feel sorry for the owners and staff who work there, if they could just update the bedrooms just a little bit then I'm sure lots of people would revisit but only on the discount price it would never be worth paying the rack rate.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 225!

We stayed for one night and that was enough. It was a bit like a rabbit warren trying to find the room - it was very old and desperately in need of upgrading. Our bathroom door locked so we could not use it through the night.............it was expensive for what it was and I am sure there is better in Ilfracombe......sorry can't recommend this one though.

Stay with my boyfriend for a weekend. He treated me to a weekend away. Weather was fabulous, room was a little small and needed a bit I paint. But it matched the whole theme of the hotel. Room had a small bath room. But for the price we paid ( a deal of voucher cloud) we couldn't complain. Lift to all floors. Staff were friendly. Can't comment on the food as we went out both nights. Breakfast was okay. We came down at about 8:45 we had to wait for some one to show us to ate table. We had waited for about 10 minutes watching everyone else eat. When breakfast did arrive, smaller then expected. But was okay. Ilfracombe is a lovely place. The harbour was lovely. Saturday we decided to go the cinema in town. £5 any film. Was really good, comfy seats and friendly staff.

Overall nice stay, great weather.

I stayed at the Grosvenor for a Wedding that was held across the road at the 'Tunnels'. The hotel is situated close to the town centre (2 mins) and harbour (10 mins), and acts as a good base to get around what is a lovely town.

The hotel itself is very 1980's with some horrendous decor whic is in dire need of bringing into the 2000s let alone 2012! The rooms are typically small in size with poor ventilation running from the bathrooms, which makes for a very humid room after having a shower. That said the place is generally clean and pleasant.

Food was ok, I had the breakfast where I was seated promptly and had my food at the table within 5 minutes.

My conclusion of the place, is that it is ok as a base to investigate a town which in my opinion is a hidden gem to the UK. Just don't pay over the odds!

We went there with friends for 2 nights for our 35th wedding anniversary using a Groupn discount voucher. Not sure what to expect, we arrived with an open mind and the welcome was good but we did not complete any paperwork which we thought was strange. Anyway the receptionist was very helpful explaining about the parking etc. Our rooms were 'tired' and could have done with a lick of paint and the bathroom was barely big enought to swing a cat with a sink no bigger than bowl but it was adequate for two nights. The bed line was clean, the beds comfy and room clean and tea making facilities were fine. The evening dinner menu was naff but the breakfast was good with a reasonable choice of food - could have done with some fresh fruit and not tinned. I woukd recommend this hotel as a base for this area of Devonfor a couple of nights but not would not stay as a longer holiday. The lounge area was nice and comfortable but could have done without the three 'new' mattresses which were stored for the weekend in there right in front of the book stand. Overall though a good comfortabel stay for s short while ad the fact the weather was warm and sunny helped. The hotel is a good location, 10 minutes walk to the harbour and the staff were great but a 'tart up' would not go amiss. For the money - it was good value but not sure I would pay full price.

Room Tip: request a room with a standard size shower otherwise you will be very restricted with space, especia...

I have just returned from a two day stay at this hotel booked through groupon. For the cost of the trip I was not expecting a lot and to be fair the standard of the rooms was acceptable given the price.

However we upgraded our room to deluxe - there was nothing deluxe about it. I can only assume the deluxe part was the shower over the bath, the trouser press on the wall or the dodgy tv. I assume all rooms had a bed and towels.

The bathroom was clean however the "deluxe" shower unit was unusual. The dial to control the water power had been removed and stuck in position "low" with white tack.

The communal areas looked pleasant but tired. It could all do with being redecorated. Someone had scratched an expletive in to he wall paper in one corridoor which was a nice greeting everytime we walked past.

We didn't stay for the evening entertainment as we felt about 40 years too young, however the people who were here looked like they were enjoying themselves.

Breakfast was an experience. We were lucky that we were ignored when we entered the dining area as it enabled us to choose our own table. Food was poor quality but the chef thoughtfully fried some of the previous nights broccoli Instead of beans. To be fair the quality reflects the value of the hotel and I did eat it.

What was not acceptable was the rude old waitress. She ignored us for 10minutes then asked who we were. We told her we were guests and she said "oh, well go and sit where you did yesterday"! We told her we already were and she replied "for gods sake" then walked off. Whilst we were contemplating what we had done to irritate her so much she returned. Her little gem of kindness time was "no offense, but when are you leaving the hotel". Needless to say we left shortly after never to return

If we hadn't had the misfortune of being served by the old hag I wouldn't have minded this hotel. It's cheap and cheerful, you get what you pay for. What is not acceptable is rudeness regardless of the price.

I'll begin by saying my expectations were very low having read the reviews on tripadvisor. This stay was a gift, so all I paid was £20 for a deluxe room upgrade (see later). We arrived at 14:10, were greeted by a very friendly receptionist, and given a quick overview of the hotel/services/parking. We were able to find a parking space immediately, and just to clarify previous reviews, there are in fact 6 spaces (4 spaces if the cars are poorly parked). The reception rooms/reading room/canteen (which is really the best word for the eating experience) are dated, but clean and tidy.

We then made our way to our Deluxe Upgrade room (363). Up sides of the room: adequate size, the bathroom was clean, and the TV worked. The bed was tired and quite firm but did the job. Down sides of the room: the kettle didn't work unless continuous pressure was applied to the flip-switch because it kept turning itself off, the towels were just large enough to preserve my modesty (and I'm slim), and the power knob on the shower unit appeared to be held in position with chewing gum.... oh, and if I stay here again, I'll bring my own toilet paper.

On the first morning, we went for breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. Up sides to breakfast: the staff were very friendly and efficient (although this was VERY different on the second morning (see later)), the breakfast was above average and the coffee was good. Down sides to breakfast: the room is set out like a school canteen and you are expected to keep the same seats for every meal. We then spent the rest of the day doing our own thing in North Devon to arrive back at 23:00. We were able to just squeeze into the 6th parking space and went to bed.

On the second morning the experience was very different. We arrived for breakfast at 08:30 and took the same table/seats as the previous day. We were approached by a surly looking woman who said "are you staying at the hotel?", to which we replied "yes". She then asked "have you eaten here before?", to which we replied "yes". She then said "can you move to the table you were sat at yesterday?", to which we replied "we ARE sat at the table we were at yesterday". She muttered some prophanity and left the table. She returned to take our order (and was still grumpy), and when she returned a third time to serve our food said "I don't mean to sound rude, but are you leaving today?". We were a bit taken aback by this, and can still not figure out what the fuss and hostility was all about the second time around. I honestly felt like pouring my orange juice over her head in protest.

To summarise: The facilities are a bit tired, but I was expecting this and so was not disappointed. The room was adequate, but I did not spend any more time than was absolutely necessary in there, and would certainly not say it warrants its 'deluxe upgrade' status. The staff were, on the whole, very friendly and helpful but there was at least one very bad egg (and frankly, she spoiled the whole experience). If you're paying for a stay here yourself, consider going elsewhere. If you’re staying here as a gift like I did and you decide to have breakfast in house, watch out for the miserable trout.

Room Tip: Don't bother with a deluxe upgrade
