“not welcoming”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

We have not stayed here but had lunch only, so can only comment on this. While the location is good we found the attention to detail appalling. We found the hotel dark and dingy as we walked through to the terrace which had a lovely harbour view but was so uninviting with no flowers anywhere and litter under some tables. Although our lunch was acceptable, the service was slow and plates on other tables were not cleared away so seagulls quickly became a nuisance. The WCs were disgusting, smelly, dirty and needed a complete overhaul. One had the lock missing and one broken and there were only 3! With such a good location but no attention to detail this seems like an opportunity thrown away.

“OK if you are hungry”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

We ate here on Friday evening after an exhaustive search of the eating places of Ilfracombe for somewhere where we felt we wanted to part with our hard-earned money, and which was still serving by the time we ended our search about 8pm.

Prices are reasonable and we were served quickly and in a courteous manner. The food (beef lasagne and vegetable lasagne) was hot and plentiful but not particularly tasty. Even though I was really hungry, I just couldn't stomach finishing what was a poor quality lasagne. When we got back to our hotel, we both said that we wanted to wash our hands - we both got the impression that the place was not as clean as it might be.

“Pub Review”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2013

Although this listing is in the hotel section, we recently visited the pub for dinner and thought it would be worth a review of our experience in the pub.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon at about 16:00. Many of the pubs in the area had stopped serving and so we were happy to find the Britannia still serving food. The pub is quite traditional inside and the barman was friendly and helpful.

The menus do not do the food justice, they are quite cramped and hard to read, however there is a massive choice and it states on the menu that all food is cooked to order.

I went for the 16oz steak cooked rare and my wife went for the chicken tikka masala. We also visited with our 9 month old daughter and they were very accommodating when we asked if they could do us a small salad for her.

We didn't have to wait too long for the food and when it came it was obvious that it had been freshly cooked. My steak was cooked as I had asked and was very good. My wife's curry was also spot on. Portion size was good as well.

The staff who brought the food out were also really friendly and helpful.

All in all we were really impressed with the Britannia and would defiantly recommend it to anyone looking for a good value, traditional pub in Ilfracombe serving good quality food.
