This is very nearly the standard one should expect of any eatery. Even when you're busy, you can still remain polite, calm and professional. Nearby restaurants take note :) My friend and I visited the "Ilfracombe Fryer" and the first thing one notices is; it is clean. We paid our money so here is our verdict. The staff were friendly on our arrival, and we were seated and served almost immediately. We'd had a different experience further along the street so we'd hope this one would be better. When we sat down, they brought us a little bucket :) which was filled with everything we needed, sauces and such. A nice touch. We have no idea of their standards in really busy periods, but one hopes it is good! We will be going back because we were reasonably happy and the staff were friendly. It is good to see young people doing a great job :) So thank you.

Our worries: young staff and what would the food be like? Why did we worry? One hopes they are well trained and well led by professionals, this is not always the case in eateries. Both of us have been in the restaurant game for over thirty years, cooking, and managing people. So with his experience in mind, we'd like to give a fair critique.

We had the Plaice Special, under £8 for a plate of Plaice and chips with a pot of tea if I recall correctly. Maybe we had peas, we don't recall. Bear in mind, these days Fish n Chips on the coast costs around £5.50 for bare bones take-outs, not always great. We got to eat in, at a great table by the window for about £2.00 more. We were served by polite and bright young people fairly quickly.

Fish: great, beautiful, a good portion of Plaice well cooked, Chips; hmmm a bit "old", only just got away with those. Hot fresh fries please :) You weren't busy. Service: very good. In general everything was well presented and worth the price and if we'd received hot fresh chips it would all have been perfect :) It can be done, we know that fries can be done quickly.

Verdict: A great place to visit with good food when not busy, one hopes the same standards are maintained when it is very busy :) Recommended with four stars :)

We sat in and all had haddock and chips, and to sum up, the haddock was soggy, full of bones, and not very nice at all. Then to top it off it turned out to be a very expensive plate of soggy haddock and chips. Won't be eating there again.

When walking past this fish and chip restaurant at lunchtime on a Sunday it was absolutely packed, however when we returned at the slightly odd time of 4pm we were the only customers in there for a while. We ate in, the menu is extensive and gives several combinations of dishes (eg Fisherman's platter). When the food arrived (it is not speedy, even for takeaway judging by how long people were standing around but this is understandable if everything is cooked to order) it was delicious, the chips were some of the best I have ever tasted. the service was polite, all in all a great place to have quality fish and chips away from the evil, thieving seagulls along the harbour!

My partner and I decided to try the Fryer as we were unsure on the quality of other nearby eating establishments. The place was very busy, and we found a table near the door which let in some welcome fresh air. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we both ordered Scampi and Chips - the food was very good - but the service a little on the slow side. The restaurant was being re-furbished but there was a good atsmosphere there. However we would go back there another time.

The fryer looked lovely from the outside so my family of 7 went in to try. The sign said wait at the door but when no one came we seated ourselves. We ordered 4 fisherman's specials with extra plates for the kids. Halfway through we realised we didnt have our tea and it took ages to come when we asked for it. When my husband asked the waitress for the milk she actually rolled her eyes at him!!!! I wanted a pudding but before we had even finished she gave us the bill at our table. Everyone else got to go to the till and pay!
What makes it crazy is they give appalling service but have 2 posters in the restaurant asking you to rate them on trip advisor!
Appearances are deceptive. Looks good but cant deliver even satisfactory.
