Description: The Quay restaurant in Ilfracombe is home to a unique and substantial collection of Damien Hirst's works. The classical fronted building has been beautifully restored and now relates well to the stunning views out to the Atlantic and the traditional harbour of this ancient port. Exmoor Angus beef served at The Quay has been bred within a few miles of the restaurant, and the Lundy crab and lobster is delivered on a daily basis by the fishermen who catch it just a few miles off shore. With a wine list to delight the heart of the average oenophile, and a stellar selection of West County cheeses and home-made desserts on the menu, The Quay is a genuine treat for discerning food and art lovers alike.

“Wonderful good, great service and lovely atmosphere”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

We got to visit on a mild December Saturday night and were one of the first groups to arrive. We were offered drinks downstairs but decided to go straight to our table. We were seated by an enormous window but as it was dark the view was limited in summer it would be amazing. The dining rooms was decorate tastefully for Christmas and we kicked off with a lovely bottle of house champagne (£45) very reasonable and nice quality.

The menu is small but it was still really difficult deciding what top have, whilst we considered the menu we were asked if we wanted bread - having eaten downstairs with lovely sliced fresh breads and balsamic we said yes - here is the only disappointment of the night at £2 it was a boring bread roll and a small pat between 4 of hard butter, it just did not fit in with the venue or the food!

Two of us opted for scallops to start and the portion was 3 each in a lovely chilli dressing with a bit of a kick, one of our party opted for calamari which was lightly cooked and a generous portion and the final choice was tuna tartar - everyone loved their starters and each was well presented and definitely put together for not just looks but also taste.

Next to mains the beef bourguignon was rich and dark, the fritto misto (3 fishes) was delicate and tasty, the steak was cooked maybe 30 seconds too long but that is to be fussy. The surprise dish which the whole table admired was the port chops with caramelised apple, the chop was large and juicy. We added extra chips and green beans and again another great course high on taste - washed down with a bottle of red and bottle of white wine.

Now dessert I have to admit to picking mine before the meal and the chocolate fondant did not disappoint. served with a rice vanilla ice-cream. Two crème brûlée and vanilla ice cream completed a wonderful meal. The space between courses was perfect and the ability to ask for an extra space before dessert led to a truly relaxing dinner.

We will be going back as there are so many things we want to try and what is quite a short menu.

“We went back ....”
Reviewed December 1, 2013 via mobile

... 2 years later! And so glad that we did, the restaurant is transformed and it's all down to great service and delicious food.
The tuna tartar was scrumptious, and the filet steak was like velvet. Served by a wonderful waiter, who has an appreciation of what great service is, that outshines the most seasoned of restauranteurs.
So glad we went back - the place is wonderful and judging from the happy sounds from other tables, the other guests there last night felt the same!

“excellent sea view”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

Very smart upstairs tables with a lovely sea view even on a blustery day. But the very stylish surroundings do not make up for very expensive food. The service is excellent and the quality of food good but you have to pay extra for vegetables or salad with your main course. Also as a non ,meat eater it was disappointing to find the chips are cooked in goose fat.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are sorry you found our prices too high, as per the chips we can indeed - upon request - cook vegetarian ones. We thank you for your positive ratings on service & atmosphere, and we hope you will visit us again soon.

“Fabulous meal, 100% spot on”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

We dined at The Quay on a busy Saturday night in early November. We were met with a warm welcome on a cold and blustery night.

The restaurant is fabulous, light and airy, very clean, the staff (5 different staff served us) were all smiley, bright with a cheerful demeanour and also had excellent knowledge of the menu and wines.

Our food was full of flavour, excellent presentation and decent value for the quality. The chef is obviously extremely talented and I would recommend to anyone. Having read some of the negative comments below I was very surprised. This was an excellent dining experience.

Well done to all the staff both in the kitchen and front of house, we will return and you will see business from our friends and contacts!!!!

“If visiting Ilfracombe and you fancy a dining experience then don't miss The Quay !!”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

We booked a table at the Quay as we were visiting Ilfracombe with friends and our children. We are all foodies so they had a tough crowd to please and they certainly did. The food was outstanding, delicious and worth every penny (£50 for 3 of us) and the pill room in which we were dining was fascinating and total unique. The manager from Lincolnshire (sorry I can't remember your name) was excellent and gave us a guided tour around the restaurant at the end with lots of fascinating facts about Damien and his art. It's so much more than just a restaurant, a dining experience that I am so glad we did. Thank you X
