“Right on the quay and central to everything”
Reviewed July 7, 2014

Historical pub in the old fashioned way but redone outside to look fairly new. Internally it was typical English pub with the best location in Ilfracombe overlooking the harbor. The rooms were small and hard to get up the stairs to and didnt have much of a view but they were clean and well kept and the royal room we stayed in had a spa which was great. Walk out off the terrace onto the beach and out the side door onto the tourist quay with all the souvenir and fish and chip shops. Dont stay anywhere else. Good value too but parking is a real problem with the only available being public parking on the fishing jetty on the other side of the bay

Room Tip: If you get the chance choose the spa room and plan on several days stay at least

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years with my children, usually on weekends, and we always called it "our happy place" it is ideally situated right by Ilfracombe harbour, so if you are very lucky you might get a room with a view. I have seen many changes over the years, it needed a lot of refurbishment and has been taken over by new owners many times, On this visit it was a two night stay with evening meals with breakfast included. We were lucky having a room with a view but wheras it was giving the impression it was a lovely room, apart from the view, the room was average and quite small. Our evening meal was limited , we was only allowed to choose certain items from the menu, and they was not at all tasty. At breakfast time, we discovered no tables laid out , non of the staff seemed to know what was available, a very big let down, and quite disappointing after my previous visits., It was good value for all inclusive and I believe the new owners were in the process of more renovation.

Room Tip: There are no lifts at this hotel so check what floor your room is on and if you want a room with a v...

This is one of the few bars where you can have a quiet conversation in Ilfracombe. Very welcome sometimes. Not having to shout at each other is welcoming at times. A nice evening drink is good. Always head for this bar on a Friday and Saturday early doors before the evening livens up.

We arrived at this hotel that was situated on the harbour side and looked over the water which was very pleasant. Our double room was so small that it did not have enough space for a chair, our complaint to the manager resulted in one night of the two being spent in a lovely room at the front of the hotel. We enjoyed our stay for the first night the manager and staff did every thing to make our stay pleasant . Rooms at the front is where we will return to in the future.

Room Tip: Never choose room 9 at the back it is small and very noisy

First impressions on arrival were of a pub with rooms with no proper reception and looking a bit tired, however, the lovely lady in the bar who also doubled as the receptionist welcomed us and showed my wife to the room while I parked the car in the long term car park about 1/4 of a mile away. On my return the bar lady showed me to our room so I could join my wife. The room was of a good size, clean with a sofa and good size TV. There was a separate bathroom and toilet with a jacuzzi and good shower. There has been some very good modernisation in the accommodation area but there is still a lot to do!

Then unfortunately we come to the bad bit, Breakfast! Stained tablecloths, indifferent hurried staff and a distinct feeling that we were getting in the way of their normal routine! Shame really as it had been going so well until then!

We would use the Hotel again but probably have breakfast at Wetherspoons which is a 5 minute walk away!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms over the beer garden and overlooking the other Pubs as they can get quite noisy, especia...

Stayed at royal Britannia for two nights in June. paid extra for seaview room which overlooked the harbour. Room was ok nice and clean, towels changed.. cannot comment on the food as we ate out.
There are a lot of drinking places in Ilfracombe, and a shortage of customers.it could be that they are busy at weekends. As for Ilfracombe itself it is a British seaside town some parts of it good some not.
