Can't understand what some people are expecting for the price of a room at this place. We found it excellent value for money.

Okay, it IS a bit scruffy from the outside - nothing a lick of paint wouldn't cure. And we did wait a while before rousing reception to show us to our room. But it was a lovely day and the pub was packed.

You don't need me to tell you about the location - it's obvious from the photos how lovely it is. But I will concur with Ian from t'Port about the decor points. Our room was also decorated to a high standard, the linens were clean and fresh and there was plentiful tea and coffee.

Also, as Ian said, there are some gorgeous period features, especially lighting and artworks.

Ignore the Attack of the Tripadvisors and get yourself a room here. Highly recommended.

Room tip: Try to get a bay window harbour view for the nicest experience.

Took my mum + dad to this hotel for an evening meal this week. The food + service were excellent. We had Hot Spicy Lentil soup for starters which was delicious + specially made by the chef just for us! Followed by a yummy vegetable lasagne. Wonderful hot wholesome food with generous servings. Desserts were delcious too, all washed down with great real ale. A very good + reasonably priced menu. Bar + waiting staff were all very polite, friendly + helpful. Lovely quiet comfortable surroundings with a nice nautical theme. Great location right by the harbour with a patio overlooking the quay + harbour. Recommended!

Room tip: Didnt stay, just an evening meal, but if the accomodation matches the food + hospitality, should be a great stay. I think some of the rooms overlook the lovely harbour.

Me my dad and my brother stayed here for a holiday in august 2012 and we loved the location! its right on the harbour couldn't be better :)! We arrived on a sunday and couldn't find anyone to help us, the reception didn't look open and looked very shabby! there were boxes and sheets around the reception which didn't look inviting! there was also a ladder on the stairs which i think was a fire escape! we decided to have a Calvary at the hotel which was lovely we all really enjoyed it! We were then given keys to our room but no one offered to help us with bags which would have been a nice touch. The room was nice and it was very big and reasonably clean, the floor we were on was the top floor and it was very very warm! the ground and 1st floor were nice and cool but our floor was very warm which made sleeping VERY hard and we couldnt open the windows due to the noise from the bar down stairs it would have been nice to have fans in the room. The double bed in the room was very comfy but the single bed was not so i chose to sleep on the bunk bed as it had a better mattress. no-one cleaned our room the whole 5 days we were there and we had to ask twice for new towels and it took two days for them to actually replace them! I think one of the worst things about this hotel is the breakfast and the restaurant area! There is no organisation! every time we got up to have breakfast there was something missing on the table and i mean every morning! first there wasn't any milk or orange juice left then there wasn't any bowls or butter then there wasn't any plates! it looked like everything was just dumped on a dirty wooden table there was no presentation and organisation at all. they need someone to be there all the time to make sure everything is available and everyone is happy. The cooked breakfast was actually really nice it was just an effort to get it as the staff are always busy which means more staff is need for this hotel! The restaurant/ dinning area really frustrates me! It has a dark red carpet, dark red walls, dark red curtains and dark wooden tables OH and dark red seats! everything is just so dark! and to make matters worse some of the lights dont work so we felt like we were in a cave! That room could look so nice if it was bright and inviting! we decided to stay for dinner one evening and that was a mistake :/ it took SO long for the food to arrive and the place wasn't even busy! me and my brother ordered garlic mushrooms and my dad ordered soup when it finally arrive it was laughable! our mushrooms were cold and just shoved on a plate with a-little bit of salad with no dressing and it should have come with sauce, my dads soup was nice though! There were only 2 other families ordering food and we could hear them complaining to each other too! main course took ages as well and i ordered chicken bacon and cheese and when it finally arrived it was laughable again! my brothers burger looked very cheap, my dad had fish and chips which was nice! lucky him! i could understand if they were really busy and we had to wait a little while but they weren't busy at all and we had to wait AGES! we never went back for dinner we went out to the restaurants near by! Go to 6. St James restaurant it was amazing and priced well! All the staff at the hotel are friendly but they just need organising! the whole place needs organising! it has such potential and could be amazing they just need to sort things out like presentation! WHY PAINT THE HOTEL A HORRID DIRTY GREEN COLOUR! it looks horrible! its such a beautiful large building why do that to it! it needs to be bright and inviting! We loved ilfracombe and the attractions near by and we loved the hotel location it was perfect its just such a shame how unorganised and shabby the place is!

Although your review is subjective and much too harsh and you should have informed management that your room did not get cleaned each day (the normal cause is do not disturb sign on the door) we have taken up many of the points that you made and are now creating a new reception area, re-vamping our restaurant, re-looking at lighting and as you said we will be improving our hotel to go with the great location that we have.
We thank you for your sincere report , however you should have had a chat with us when you were here as you may be critical bur write with genuine feelings and not out of spite like some of the others negative reviewers.

Just spent 3 nights here, had the most superb time going, the rooms are tidy and clean and very reasonably priced, the location is superb and the staff are just lovely and friendly, what more do you need, would definately go back there without a doubt!

Stayed one night at this hotel, it's nothing more than an old boozer with shabby rooms. We overlooked a pub across the street which had very load smokers and drinkers outside till very late. We even had two young lads knocking at our door at 10.30pm looking for their sister, so what does that tell you?? The only good thing is it's location. Didn't fancy the breakfast so went to local cafe.

Room tip: Get room looking out onto cove.

We had a customer’s young girl who went to toilet but the family could not find her so her panicking brother knocked on room’s doors without us knowing
Staff had no idea of this until you charged down the stairs flexing your mussels at kids half your size and wanting to beat up the kids and our staff alike.
We normally ban bullies for life from here and call the police immediately however we just assured you that we would put a guard on the base of the stairs to make sure you did not get disturbed again and did not have any reason to beat up our staff or little kids.
It was very unpleasant having you here for our staff and customers who were very scared to go up to their rooms just in case they were near your room and disturbed you.
We were all very pleased that you only stayed here for one night.
