Reviewed September 23, 2012

Me and my partner traveled really late that evening! And all we got was NO room at this inn??? But then we were guided to the Royal Britannia Hotel on the harbour it was nearly midnight? He had no rooms available but kindly rang round to sister hotels which we still got NO room here? Richard then told me to wait whilst he spoke to a guest who had the 3 bed apartment, he then returned to say that we could have one of the rooms at 20£ each AMAZING!!!!! He went out of his way to help us which goes a long way! The room was basic but clean and it suited us well, so thank you again Richard and wife and son, we will return and hope to see you in Bath at the guest house I work at!! Thank you again. We are a couple in our forties who wanted a short break on our own without our teenagers. Booked online last minute for 3 nights £147 for Thursday, Friday & Saturday in August 2012 in a room without a harbour view. Full English breakfast charged in addition was £5 each - excellent value. Unfamiliar with Ilfracombe before our visit. Very pleased to find Hotel right on harbour with terrace where breakfast/meals can be eaten. Our room very clean, recently decorated to high standard. Restricted width access to shower, but luckily I am only 16 stone now so I could squeeze through door - owner told me he was aware of this issue and that room was the last one requiring modification. Obviously, the whole building is in the process of being renovated there are some very attractive period features and when its finished it will be outstanding. We had a lovely time met owner as soon as we arrived and found all staff very friendly and helpful. Note for other travellers: Order your choice of breakfast from bar area as soon as you come down in the morning. Vegetarian option very good as well as full English. 24 hr parking is available in harbour car park for £3.10 or cheaper out of season. Lovely walks around Hotel, harbour and next to jetty for boat/fishing trips. We left the car parked for our whole stay. Numerous other pubs/restaurants/real ale. There are some better rooms than we stayed in with bay windows and harbour views, next time we stay we will pick one of those.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view.

Best location in Ilfracombe but that's about it. Despite claims of refurbishment on the website there were no signs in the public areas.Fortunately the weather was superb so we didn't need to sit inside in the dining room which was in a state. Expensive 2 nights Thurs/Fri at £158 room only - extra £20 for breakfasts - on terrace surrounded by beer drinkers. Breakfast menu was not all available. Never met anyone who was identified or introduced as Manager/Proprietor. General overall impression was dirty and neglected. If we had booked direct with the hotel we would have queried the rate but booked online and had to pay in advance.
Why didn't we take note of the other reviews?

Room Tip: King Room - No 2 - appeared to have been refurbished and decorated.

You or your friends may not like our hotel for whatever reason and we are sorry to hear that as we try so hard to make everyone happy however you cannot say the location is bad as anyone who has visited here knows that this is the Best Location in Ilfracombe and probably the best Sea view location in the UK

Brilliant location right on the harbour. Rooms were spacious clean and comfortable while retaining some of their heritage charm. Staff were all relaxed and welcoming. Breakfast on the sunny terrace overlooking the harbour was delightful. Good value breakfast with an easy "help yourself" attitude. We would definitely stay again. Family room suited us perfectly travelling with our parents and 12 yr old.

Can't comment about the hotel rooms as we only ate lunch on the terrace overlooking the harbour. Good, substantial crab/prawn sandwiches were served with salad and nibbles and we had a bowl of crispy fries and a couple of glasses of wine too. Would have been a fantastic place to while away an hour or so - except it's just too scruffy for words! If this place put its mind to seeing itself through the customer's eyes and tidied itself up a lot, it would be a goldmine and a far more pleasant place to be.

Point taken as for our inability to keep the plates and glasses cleared during busy times and we are looking at ways to improve this. As for service we have our top restaurant with excellent service if customers want service however the price reflect this as most of our customers who only want to pay £6.00 for a main meal understand that they cannot expect the same level of service as the customers who are paying £15 + for the same quality meals.

Me and my husband booked here for 6 nights for our honeymoon and I can defiantly say this is the worst hotel ever. On arriving no body greeted us with a friendly welcome etc staff jus didn't seem bothered in the slightest had to wait around to be checked in. Then after bein shown to the room I then had to come down to the bar to ask what time breakfast was which was replied in a manner of unfriendliness. No staff were around when needed! At midnight a member of staff unlocked our door as we were sleepin after a long drive down on the 1st night when I challenged the staff the next mornin I was told that no 1 had come in as her and 1 other manager had a master key but it wasn't one of them apparently when it definitely was we were absolutely disgusted by the situation it made me fearful of sleepin there after that ! We ended up packing and leaving as we had had enough!! It ruined our honeymoon and I Wud never stay there again

We don’t know of any problems as the couple were asked if everything was ok and if we could help them by two members of staff and the answer was everything is fine so we cannot comment
The couple did ask if someone had opened the door at 10pm (not 12) and the answer was no as the only possible time staff would go is any room is cleaning times or to show the room to other customers
The Keys are security Keys so no other room key would fit that room
The room is fine, as acknowledged by the couple on check in and staff was helpful in giving them help to get parked up however the couple did check out earlier and without paying the full bill.
