“Hotel Good, Food not so good”
Reviewed November 17, 2009

The Hotel was old with no lifts sits on a street corner with traffic lights so is noisy at night.
The staff were friendly and helpful, wee had dogs they were welcome.
the food was not so good the meat was tough the roast potatoes were days old and rock hard. if you want a cheap hotel and don't mind the food it`s the place to stay

Hotel was old fashioned but lovely, rooms very clean.
Child friendly and the banquet was fantastic. Ive never ate so much in my life. The piped in haggis was an experience in its self. Also entertainment provided therefore no need to go elsewhere after dinner. Well worth a visit.

I’m a bit surprised when I look through the past reviews of this hotel as on the whole they seem to rate it highly. Whether the “Star” has an official “star-rating” I’m not sure - but based on our experience and to put expectations into context, I would rate it as a 2-star.

We visited in April 2009 as part of a group looking to ski at the Nevis range and it is without a doubt “good value” based on the price which we paid for the weekend. The hotel is based on the High Street in Kingussie with parking accessed from the neighbouring side street to a number of spaces at the rear of the building.

Our room was located just off this car park area in an annex to the main building and overlooking the side street. There were a few rooms in this building. It may be that other TA visitors have stayed in the main building when they mention spacious rooms. Ours was small with space for a double bed and a wardrobe and an ensuite with a bath (no shower). The furnishings and bedspread were dated. I noticed later when lying in the bath, from this vantage point, the place wasn’t that well cleaned since there was signs of soap residue or similar substance clinging to the underside of the washbasin and the taps, etc. There were also pet hairs on the carpet and we don’t have a dog or cat. Worse was to come when after our first night’s stay I discovered that I’d been bitten by something during the night - and it wasn’t the wife or Count Dracula! All signs would point to bed bug(s). I appreciate that in theory this could happen in any hotel or guest room - we just have never considered it before. We reported our concerns to the reception the following day and were assured that appropriate treatments were a feature of their regular maintenance. No consolation for us with another night to spend in the room. Sleeping with my knees drawn up to my chin on the second night fortunately I avoided further blood-sucking. Had we not been with a group a second night in the hotel would have furthest from our minds.

On the plus side the waiting staff, many of whom are from other European countries, were friendly and quick at serving and the local bar staff were also fine. The food was perfectly ok bearing in mind the price being paid and the main parts of the building, whilst old-fashioned, looked to be maintained. At night a good ceilidh band entertained guests and there was a small dance floor on the first floor level to display your knowledge of highland dances (or lack of it!).

Overall I can see the attraction that the hotel is great value however with our experience of the “night life” and the subsequent major clean up required when we returned home, we won’t be rushing back.

We stayed from 23rd Dec until 27th Dec and we thoroughly enjoyed our entire time there. The Staff are exceptional, nothing is too much for them. The food is plentiful and very well presented. You need another walking holiday to compensate for the meals you have eaten! On Xmas Eve we were out in the street to greet Santa and his Reindeer. The Hotel provides everyone with a camera to take pictures as a memento. Every guest received a present from Santa too, on Xmas day.

On our last day we went on the Funicular Railway and stood on the top of the Cairngorms. Magical moments. I had forgotten an item from the safe and the staff had already called me when I realised. Exveptional service and a great Xmas break.

We met some lovely people there and have kept in touch and have already booked for next year. There is a waiting list with regard to a New Year stay and we are already on that too.

  • Liked — That nothing was too much trouble. Friendly people & a great atmosphere.

My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights in November, room was a reasonable size, toilet a little small, shower was big enough for me, and I'm 6' 2", nice and tidy, clean towels everyday.

The staff were always very pleasant and helpful, from the moment we arrived till the moment we left, nothing was too much trouble for them.

The food was excellent, breakfast was cereal or porridge, toast, fruit juice, followed by a full Scottish or poached/scrambled eggs on toast. Dinner was 3 courses, with a different choice of courses each day, and good size portions. Final night was a 6 course banquet, with the haggis being piped in, don't eat much before dinner that day.

Entertainment on 2 of the nights we were there, first night was a man singing a selection of 60's, 70's, 80's and country songs. The second night was two men with accordion and guitar playing scottish dance music for people to dance to.

  • Liked — Very Friendly atomosphere.
  • Disliked — Toilet a little small.

As a family we regularly spend time at this hotel. As a suprise ruby wedding celebration for my brother and sister in law we booked a weekend break. The party included age ranges from early twenties to late fifties and not forgetting our trusted ten year old dog. As usual we cannot fault the food, accomodation, staff and entertainment. We sincerely hope that hotel and management continue to offer this standard of service and friendilness into the future, including the dog friendly environment.
Many thanks again the Qualters family (Falkirk)
