“Sheer Bliss!”
Reviewed May 8, 2012

My wife and I stayed here for one night on DBB basis on our way home from a holiday in the Scottish highlands. The Cross is advertised as a "Restaurant with Rooms" but what I would say is it is virtually just a small hotel.
We were met by Katie, one of the owners, and the welcome could not have been more friendly or efficient. Check-in was simple and we soon in our room, which, incidentally, we could have accessed from 2pm - amazingly early in our experience, and most welcome.
Our room, a Standard bedroom, was reasonably spacious, bright, well-equipped and spotlessly clean, as was the en-suite bathroom/shower. This also was well-appointed, including a bidet! Something of a rarity in UK hotel rooms. The bed was large and very comfortable.
As there are only 8 rooms in The Cross, guests really do receive personal treatment. On arriving downstairs for dinner, we were met by our waitress and pre-dinner drinks and menus were speedily provided, then Katie appeared to announce that, as my wife and I both have little food allergies, alternatives were available if we required them. This was very much appreciated.
The quality of the meal in the three-AA Rosette restaurant was simply superb. There is evidence of real culinary skill here. All courses from the pre-starter right through to dessert were simply delicious; served with efficiency and grace from the delightful staff here. They could not do enough for us. The dining room itself is surprisingly spacious and no sense here that as many tables as possible have been squashed in - no danger of anyone encroaching on anyone else's conversation!
All in all, The Cross at Kingussie is a slick, classy operation - a place to savour and enjoy.

Staying here is like being at the home of a special friend. The family that runs The Cross are beyond warm and friendly, they put you at ease and spoil you.
The dinner and breakfast are first class. The service is classy.
Hands down the nicest B&B we stayed in

Lovely setting and excelllent service. Food was high quality and inventive. However after paying £50 per person (set price) I felt that an additional £5 per person for a coffee and two chocolates at the end of the meal was just a rip off.

Our second visit to The Cross just endorsed our original high opinion of food, wine and staff! We haven't stayed in the rooms - so can't comment on those, but the welcome is wonderfully warm! We enjoyed a fantastic meal (I can't believe the bitter chocolate tart could ever be surpassed.....and the scallops were a dream!) and some decent wine (with the help of Katy who knows her stuff and doesn't for one moment make you feel like you don't!). I love the place because there is no snobbery or pretentiousness here - just an obvious regard for excellent food and wine - and a devotion to customer service. I don't think Kingussie can keep these two for very much longer - and it'll be a loss to the Highlands when they move on! I'll certainly be back - to visit The Cross and to experience the Badenoch & Strathspey Festival again - a real tribute to the energy and devotion of Carolyn Turner, Festival Chair! Can't believe Kingussie, such a little and unremarkable place otherwise, has such talented folk!

Just back from a 2nd visit to The Cross. Last time we visited with friends and got a taxi back home but this time we stopped for the night on the way back from Edinburgh. Couldn't really have been much better.

The food was fantastic and we left the wine choice to Katy who recommended two organic wines - one biodynamic - from a really interesting wine list. Some familiar names but lots of wines that were new to us.

Slept very well and woke to the first snow fall of the year. We set off north fuelled by a hearty Scottish breakfast which included a first for us - fried banana bread. Genius!

My wife and I went for our first wedding anniversary and oils not have been better looked after! The room was ample sized with a massive, very comfy bed and relaxing sounds of the river outside. The highlight however was the food and wine! We have eaten in one and two Michelin star restaurants and were not disappointed by the Cross's efforts.
The emphasis is very much on local and seasonal which I love and being game season, had some lovely dishes. Four courses with two choices and the menus changed each night we were there. My duck with braised red cabbage and parsnip baji's was awesome, as was the lamb with crispy sweetbreads.
The award winning wine list was extensive but easy to follow with good explanations and food matching and fun pointers like ambulance symbols for wine greater than 14%vol. My red wines chosen by the chef complimented the food perfectly.
Breakfast was both filling and tasty with various cereals, an abundance of fresh fruit and berries, homemade bread and a sample of local cooked meat going down a treat.
A very special couple of days in a stunning location and good value for money all considered. We will definitely be back!

A last minuite booking made by friends for a party of 9.
We only stayed 1 night thank goodness, this is not a 4* hotel the food was ok but not worth a set price of £50! The rooms are basic & need a face lift.
The staff are the most bossyest people I have met it was like being back at school with all the rules & regs.
We will not be returning.
