“A Speyside Gem”
Reviewed December 15, 2007

This small hotel was a real treat in early December, arriving very late after a long drive we were given a really warm welcome.

The rooms were spotless, comfortable and quiet.

Breakfast was traditional, well cooked and presented, porage was available.

The warm welcome and kind support marks this hotel as one that deserves a return visit.

Great value, the owner is a character if you want to have a few drinks over the bar. The room was clean and big enough, the bathroom worked quite well. Noticed a few of the comments below and thought I should clarify for people:
- We paid GBP64 for a couple with breakfast. Not sure what people expect for this, but was in summer. There is a backpacker place in town for GBP20 per person if that's what people are after, or there are expensive B&Bs if that's what people are after
- The bathroom worked, but I guess it is small compared to more expensive B&Bs
- We didn't eat in the restaurant for dinner, as we thought it wasn't that well priced and a small B&B is rarely going to cook everything fresh when it has a large menu and only a few diners - think about it. But it looked okay if you don't want to go out. We went down to the Glen Hotel in Newtonmore (next town) from a tip off at the local butchers who are fantastic (bought some pies off them and brought them home). The Glen hotel is fantastic value for good food, beer and mixing with the locals. 1.5 mile drive
- The breakfast was okay really, not gourmet, but again, what do you expect

I would definately recommend this little B&B for people passing through or looking to explore the surrounding highlands - much better than staying in Aviemore. Also - go 1 mile to visit the Ruthven Barracks ruins!

I stayed at The Scot House in March 06 during the off season. It was a very pleasant stay, and I would certainly book there again. The room room was spacious, comfortable, clean, and fairly priced. The food was outstanding. And the hospitality of the hosts, Colin and Helen, was delightful.

In looking for a central location that would give me easy access to most of the Highlands, I first settled on Kingussie by consulting a map. Then I found The Scot House via google search. I called directly to book a room the day before my arrival. The location was an ideal base for driving tours around the Highlands; e.g., I drove around Loch Ness and visited Inverness and still made it back to The Scot House in time for dinner.

Colin and Helen were wonderful hosts. I spent hours talking to them at the bar and in the cozy lounge about Scottish history, the American Civil War, politics, and the proper manufacture of a kilt. They were most helpful with sightseeing advice, and even helped me ship a large quantity of oatcakes.(!)

The food was genuinely outstanding, with an ample selection of wines. One mid-week evening, I think I was the only guest in the hotel (it was the offseason) and I did feel a little guilty about them mobilising a full staff to prepare and serve my meal. But it was to my benefit, and the service was very good.

  • Liked — food; conversations with the managers
  • Disliked — room was a bit chilly the first night (this was remedied)
  • Tips/Secrets — the butcher shop nearby makes terrific meat pies
