“Calm & Relaxing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

This was my third trip to Melville. I keep returning as I have always received consistent service from pleasant and helpful staff. The hotel and facilities are always clean. The restaurant offers a good choice of food which is enjoyable and nicely presented. The hotel offers reasonable deals which include ferry and subsidised spa treatments. I reported a minor maintenance problem with my room which had been sorted by the time I returned later in the day. I like the ambience which is comfortable and calm. The magnificent coral reef fish tank is very soothing.
I also like the IOW festival memorabilia adorning the bar walls. I will certainly go again.

Room Tip: If you get a room with a spa bath it's great!

Helpful, friendly staff. Very relaxing atmosphere. Enjoyed using the spa area after a days cycling. Outdoor pool and area looked good but didn't have the chance to use. Comfy beds and fluffy bath robes. Average breakfast which didn't compare to the top breakfast enjoyed the day before at a B and B in Freshwater. Weird that you had to return the bath towels and robes on departure.

Room Tip: room 235 was nice and looked recently refurbished.

Thank you Sharon for taking the time to leave your comment forms at the hotel as well as leave a review here on Tripadvisor. As you are aware as we spoke at least 4 times prior to your arrival, I have changed the policy of how group bookings are dealt with here at Melville Hall Hotel.

After making your initial booking for 4 rooms, you cancelled one room, then swapped rooms several times to accommodate your party. We also had guests calling up to pay deposits when we had no record of their name as you failed to tell us the people that were attending, and when I sorted this with you, you then swapped who was sharing with whom so it ended up almost impossible to track the individual payments that had been made through our system. You were told several times that the treatments included in your stay should be booked well in advance and yet just 48 hours prior to arrival you contacted us to book a total of 17 treatments, expecting us to have full availability, a task which Jessica undertook impeccably to accommodate your last minute request and emailed confirmation that afternoon as requested. Upon arrival at the hotel your party then chose to add additional treatments which we agreed to reduce the cost of those additional ones by 25% and then swap and change several of the 17 pre-booked treatments that had been scheduled. Changing treatments last minute is an organisational nightmare as certain treatments can only be carried out in certain treatment rooms. All this again was handled by Jessica in a professional manner and with no errors in the rescheduling.

Upon checkout there was confusion over the bills as treatments which were booked at full price in advance were demanded to be reduced to the last minute special offer price of a 25% discount (despite the discount only being applicable to treatments booked for the last couple of slots we had available on the day). We reduced the cost of all treatments for you by 25% as a gesture of goodwill. We even waived charges which were due for bar drinks as your party argued in reception with each other about who should pay the bar bill, as well as waiving the second night dinner charge for 6 people despite dinner not being included on the second night of your stay.

Throughout your stay all the hotel staff were instructed to treat you as VIP's to ensure your break went smoothly and without issue. Your comments regarding the staff in your review confirm that they carried out my instructions as requested. It is a shame however that the 6 of you took it upon yourselves to harass Jessica at almost every opportunity despite her granting your requests on every occasion. At 17 years old Jessica is more than capable of dealing with challenging situations and reacting in a positive manner despite on one occasion being bullied into granting you a large discount off all your treatments when confronted by the 6 of you on her own at Reception.

Whilst we thoroughly enjoy providing the best service we can to all types of clientele, your group has shown us that it is not always possible to do this with each individual member of a group and as such and mentioned above, I have changed the policy regarding group bookings. In future the organiser of the group (yourself in this instance) will be the only point of contact for making the booking, administering the payments, requesting amendments and organising the treatments. When 6 people are all expecting their demands to be met simultaneously the last thing I want is a group arguing amongst themselves in the hotel reception which is embarrasing for my staff as well as my customers. Consequently, should you wish to return as a group to Melville Hall, those criteria above would need to be met. You would of course receive the same high standard of attentiveness that the staff demonstrated on this occasion.

Great offer for this hotel including the ferry on the website. I found this hotel great value for money against what you pay as the service and rooms were of a good standard.
The outdoor pool and jacuzzi was great though a shame all the jets didn't work but was still lovely on an evening after a day out

Great value break that included very good evening meals and relaxing by the sunny pool. Very clean throughout the hotel. Staff were always helpfull. Note that you are entitled to bath robes to go to the sauna area which was forgotten. Will go again in the summer.

So I stayed here with my partner for 2 nights it was ok. I actually liked the outdated look the outdoor and indoor pool where good. The food was good too not wow and the breakfast was lovely too. Upon arrival we where greeted well and got sent to our room the room was ok was going to drink water but the water had a lipstick mark on it was not pleased at all. Can not believe it. In the night there where bunch of kids running up & down the corridor. The 2nd day no one cleaned the room which was weird. Also the 2nd day the wifi was not working at all complained at reception and was told it was fine as no one has complained. Asked guest around and they all said we are not using it (looks like they where waiting for people to complain) and then check out which was annoying I got told to pay for the ferry and the massage when it was included looks like they don't check nothing.

Spent three nights at the hotel in September. A lot has been said previously about the hotel being dated, but that does not make It bad, very similar to other hotels found in Victorian resorts all around Britain.
We had a superior room on the ground floor at the front of the hotel. The room was large clean well furnished and the bed was really comfortable. The hotel location is nice and quiet yet within easy reach of the centre of Sandown. We had one dinner and breakfast each day the food was very good no complaints at all. The swimming pool facilities are very good and we used the outdoor pool every day.
All the staff we had contact with we're very friendly and helpful.
Would return to this hotel if in the area again.
