Fort Holiday Park
Reviewed August 23, 2012

We stayed here in june and had the same problem with flooding that the people staying in july had encountered, the trouble is this place is basically set up on a marshland and it doesnt take a lot to of rain to make it very difficult to get around, i had to get a luggage trolley to get my 2 young children from the caravan to the car park, we couldnt even get the children to the so called play area , not without waders anyway.
This was not the only problem we encountered, our caravan door refused to lock, we did go to reception and report this but nothing was done which meant everytime we went out we had to take anything of value along with us, not ideal, we had also paid for linen and bedding before we came out but it wasnt in the caravan when we arrived, nor was it offered when we checked in at reception, so it meant another trek through the water back to reception to pick it up.
We felt abandoned here with all the problems with the flooding at no point were we ever asked if everything was ok, or did we need assistance, obviously they are used to the flooding we were not.
I have seen in previous reviews the words peaceful and perfectly situated mentioned im afraid this isnt the case at all on one side you have an estate and on the other side you have a skate park, the swearing and shouting from the skate park would start at 9am and continue until 9 pm, this place doesnt give a good representation of the island, i have been coming to the island for 25 years and there are far better parks around.
I will give a quick mention of the pub on the grounds, which i think is owned by the same people, the childrens play area was great, but the food was very average and im being kind by calling it that to be honest, again travel out of the park to find much better for the same price.

We are sorry to hear the problems you had with you van were not sorted quickly as our aim is to rectify problems as and when they arise. We have reviewed our system and taken steps, so hopefully simple jobs like this don't get missed.
The linen again must have been an oversight in reception and we are constantly reviewing are systems so this doesn't happen.

The problems we have had with flooding have been caused this year with the extreme and unusual amounts of rainfall and we do try to offer assisstance when asked and give out information from the environment agency when we get it. Fortunately we managed to stay open unlike some parks on the mainland who lost their livelyhood due to flooding.

The noise from the skatepark, which is clearly mapped in our brochure, was at the time of your visit being left unlocked.
We have had meetings with the council and they now lock the skatepark.

We spent a week at the Fort Holiday Park from the 6th to the 13th July. We were on a Sun Holiday, we rang the park as asked if we could extend the holiday to a week, they did this and they booked the ferry for us too.
We had a basic two bedroom caravan and it was great, yes a bit dated, but spotlessly clean, very well equipped, and very comfortable.
It was perfect for us, a lovely quiet site, within walking distance of the shops and beach, and a lovely base to tour the island from.
There is a co-op store a few minutes away, ad if you don’t ant to eat in the Calkheads pub, (you get a 10% discount if you are staying at the Park), there is a Fish and Chip shop to eat in or take away, but as its only a small Island, you can always have a drive out to find somewhere to eat.
Jane and David made us very welcome, they were always about if you needed them, nothing was too much trouble.
There were problems, no ones fault, but the whole site became flooded, as did part of the park next door and Brown’s Golf. There was a problem with Sluice Gates on the river going into the sea, what started as a bit of boggy grass on the Saturday, was 10 to 12 inches deep water by Sunday, Environmental Health were called in by Jane and Dave, and the gates were repaired, but they could only be opened at low tide, so it took till Thursday for the flooding to subside, this is where our true British Spirit kicked in, no one complained (it was no ones fault) in fact in probably brought everyone together. We paddled to our cars, luckily, the weather was fine so it wasn’t a problem, the water was clean - not sewage - and it looked beautiful, very pretty, it certainly made for a different type of holiday photo. We had dreamed about going on a cruise, but we couldn't afford it, when the park was flooded it looked as though the caravans were flooating - who needs a cruise? .....
We will certainly go back there, it is ideal for us, and we would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Tell them exactly what you want, Jane and Dave will do there best to give you what you want. We wan...

Thank you for the great pictures
Love the cruising caravans title,
Lets hope that 2013 will mean we can dock somewhere warm and have people sunning themselves on the grass and not just floating past.

We stayed here on a Sun Holiday in June 2012 for a week. Because our party consisted of myself, my two children, my sister and my mother, I telephoned the park to enquire about upgrading to a three bedroom caravan. The lady I spoke to was very helpful and had already allocated us a three bedroom caravan. The entrance road to the park is quite narrow but there is access through the Caulkhead pub carpark which we used quite regularly. Check-in was swift and we located our caravan easily. I especially liked that the carpark was situated away from the caravans so children can play outside without parents having to worry about cars. The grounds surrounding the caravans are well maintained, although it was a little water logged because of the heavy rain they'd had. There was a small park for the children and a playing area for ball games. Picnic tables are outside all the caravans and there are facilities to BBQ if the weather was good. Although a little dated and basic, our caravan was spacious, well laidout and clean. Because there is no clubhouse on site, it was really quiet and peaceful. We could hear children playing in the skatepark behind the park but nothing too loud. The park is perfectly situated to walk into Sandown and is close to shops, the beach, the pier and arcades, the zoo and Dinosaur Isle. The chip shop just around the corner is nice but does shut a little bit early. Caulkhead Pub, which is owned by the park, does really nice meals, reasonably priced (children can eat for a £1 if brought with an adult meal) and has an indoor and outdoor childrens play area so really great for families. If you like holiday parks with lots of onsite facilities and activities, a swimming pool and evening entertainment, this park isn't really for you. But if, like us, you like a peaceful site, close to the beach and shops, this park is ideal. We've been on a lot of Sun Holidays in caravans and this is one of our favourite parks, despite the weather.

We can here on a Sun holiday break. When we got to the island our car brakes went so I had to get them fixed and with two young children they prioritised us to get into the holiday caravan. Facilities were nice and everything was spotless. The owner was often on hand around the sight and it was a nice family feel. Nice to have a parking area rather than cars going all around. Great location to the beach and gives a good starting point.

unfortunately our car broke down again! this time we were going to have to wait for parts. We spoke to the owner and he went through with us how we could access parts of the island by bus and train.

On the day we were meant to leave the car still wasn't fixed. The owner helped us out by first letting us use one of the caravans to wash in the afternoon and then when it became apparent we were going to be stranded for another night he made another caravan avaiable for us for an extra night.

I thought the sefvice we recieved here was first class and what could have been a disaster holiday was made so much nicer due to the support from the owners and staff of this caravan site.

I would definitely recommend to anyone.

We have just come back from this lovely little holiday park, ideally situated in Sandown, walking distance to the town, beach, pier and zoo, central to many other places of interest too. The park itself is in a lovely setting, we really liked the idea that the car park was separate and you used a trolley to pack/unpack the car which meant our toddler could walk to our parents caravan in safety. Our caravan was a little dated, but very clean and well maintained, would definately return again very soon.

Just come back from this friendly holiday park based on the Isle of Wight. The caravan we had was a 3 bed 8 berth van, a little dated and drafty but clean. A fairly quiet camp-site and very tidily kept, any problems reported were quickly dealt with. Could have done with larger breakfast dishes as what was in the van were only big enough for very young children, all else was fine.We was only a five minuet walk from the lovely beach and town centre shops. We had purchased this holiday via The Sun £9.50 holidays and that is what made our time away worth it, i would have been very disappointed if I had paid full price for this holiday.
I would recommend this camp-site to others if you are looking for a Sun £9.50 holiday.

Room Tip: You should get a better caravan if you pay full price.

We are preparing for two more trips to Fort Holiday Park this year. Just can'y beat it! Friendly, Ideally situated, We have been coming here for years and in spring summer and autumn we've loved it. It is hard to describe atmospheres but this one is just great. It's gentle it's laid back and relaxing for families, couples, friends or anyone who likes a holiday where you can chill together be on holiday and leave your other drab or too busy life behind for a week or so..or even less. Well run by a wonderful family. We wan't to share this but worry that too many people will find out about it and we'll not be able to get in. mums the word!
