Owner description: Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.Wherever possible we are open seven days a week between May and September, and during weekends and school holidays in the winter. However, it is not possible for us to open on some days because of tidal conditions. The stated opening times can also be subject to variations on occasion due to weather affecting the times of the tide.

“Beautiful setting, easy to get to, interesting wildlife”

Pure white lighthouse just off the main road. Interesting birds and seaweed aplenty, with a cottage garden. Beautiful views, but check the tide times to get across to the lighthouse itself. Still a lovely wander and view if you cant cross. Nice burger and donut van and loos.

“Always a favourite!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013

Always something different to find out on the rocks, whether it be a crab or a seal! and you can climb the lighthouse to see them from the protection of behind the glass if its a bit too cold on those winter days! they also have a gift shop, and activities for children. Good fun for all the family!

Here you will get great views over the bay. Not for the faint hearted though, I got dizzy coming down the stairs.

“Great coastal landmark”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2013

St Mary's lighthouse is a great place to visit providing the tide is out to allow the short walk across, families can explore the rocks & just enjoy the superb views. Parking is fine but can be busy during summer months, the resident ice cream van sells very tasty treats ideal for all the family.
