“Underestimated Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

Partner & I visited this well known landmark for the first time.

Initial impressions were ok with decor fresh but a little confused. Jazz soundtrack was a definite turn off for me but I have to say the food was excellent. Black pudding starter was great!

Price wise its not the cheapest by far. Need to put something on to attract a slightly younger crowd and this could be a great place

“fantastic food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

Took my brothers (one live in near Cannes, and eats out regularly at 5 star restaurants on The Cote d'Azure) on Thursday along with my husband and my brother's French wife.

The food was excellent. My brother was very impressed and so was the rest of us. The owner was lovely and came out to speak to us and explain his source of the food he cooks. As far as the staff's attitude was concerned I think they were impeccable.

Will definately be recommending it to all our friends.

“Sunny & Cold outside....Frostier inside”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2013

Went for lunch with my parents who were celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary. This was my second visit since new owners had taken over and my parents first.
There was a distinct lack of warmth from the two staff waiting on the tables.
Briefly:
Ambience - None
Service - Complacent
Food - Average, nothing special. No WOW factor
Value - £60 for 4 including soft drinks. Reasonable.
Would we return - NO

I would agree with the previous member's comments. Front of house and waiting staff need to give a welcoming feel to their clients or the covers will decline from only the 13 that were there when we were eating.

“Good in Parts”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

Went there on a Wednesday at 7pm for an anniversary dinner. This restaurant had changed hands 8 months ago and this was our first visit under the new management. We were welcomed promptly and shown to our table. There were about a dozen other guests. We were offered either the Early Bird (+ £2 because it was after 6.30pm) or A La Carte. As both provided a good range of fish, fowl, meat and vegetarian, and the Early Bird was sufficient to keep us both happy, we opted for that. Starters chosen included a brocolli and blue cheese soup and bruschette (their spelling). We chose a glass of house wine each - one red, one white on the basis that you can usually judge the quality of a restaurant by its choice of house wine. These were simple wines. The white was better regarded than the red. Both were dry and passed muster. We were not offered water. The soup lacked the blue cheese bite but was otherwise flavoursome. The bruschette was OK, although, in keeping with most restaurants, not authentic, being overdecorated. Mains chosen included belly pork and beef cheeks. The belly pork crackling, crackled. The fatty components were full of flavour, the lean meat was a little tough and slightly stringy. The jus (gravy) complemented the pork, as did everything except perhaps the red cabbage, which jarred a little. At least it tasted like red cabbage! The beef cheeks dish was shredded meat - not what we expected - and appeared to have been "potted".. Along with the roasted vegetables the whole meal was pronounced to be tasty and very acceptable.
At this point we became invisible. We could have called for one of the two front of house staff, but decided to wait and see how long we would have to wait. The table guests on one side were apparently receiving apologies for something or other (preferred, reserved table not being available?) and were being plied with liquers and mints as an apology. The table on the other side arrived later than us. When their main course plates were cleared away, they were immediately offered a choice of desserts. Our main course plates had been cleared, but no desserts were offered. Perhaps we offended the staff and they decided to freeze us out? Probably just incompetence? After over 20 minutes, we decided we'd had enough, went to the bar and paid, expressing our irritation at the absence of service. We received a "Sorry about that Sir", but no offer to put things right. The food is OK (can't comment on the desserts - never offered). But, if our experience is anything to go by, they do need to get a grip of front of house, otherwise they will eventually run out of customers. And that would be a pity.
