Owner description: Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

“A wow of a castle”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

What an AMAZING setting. And such history. Yet another highlight of our Manx trip and another island must-see. We took advantage of the audio guide offered as part of the (we thought very reasonable) £4.40 entrance charge and it was certainly easier than grappling with the guide book whilst trying to climb around the site!

“Haunting history”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

Good atmosphere and stunning views. Well preserved ruins and easy to get around. You can look for seals, basking sharks and whales from the footpath round the outside.

“A lot to see”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The site is a lot bigger than we had anticipated, but very interesting. There is a recorded commentary, which you program numbers shown on posts around the site into a hand held speaker to hear, but this did seem to drag and get a little boring. We actually didn't have time to see the whole site, but still spent the best part of 90 minutes here.

“Good for children”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Peel Castle is great for children as there is so much space between walls and lots of grassy banks so they can run around and enact their own battles! The site is all ruins so hard for them to use the audio guides but if they have imagination its great! No amenities on site.
