Owner description: Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

“Good place to spend an hour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013

Whilst a complete ruin you can get a good idea of what it was like in its heyday. Quite a steep slope up the the entrance from the harbour side, not particularly well signed as the entrance. On a clear day you can see Ireland from the castle. Also a good vantage point to see the town and harbour of Peel.

“Fascinating historic site”

Fabulous situation atop the tiny St Patrick's Isle - surrounded by the clearest sea I've ever seen! Audio-guide very useful, giving information about the long and varied history of the Castle and Cathedral - fascinating!

“Great castle well worth a visit.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

Spent an hour here, which wasn't enough, but we were pushed for time as we had a boat trip booked, got free entry as I am a member of English Heritage. It is a big castle and it is well worth using the audio guide as it is very informative about the various different phases of occupation.

“Huge castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

This huge castle occupies most of St. Patrick's Isle and although incomplete it offers a wealth of interest.
Your visit will be enhanced by taking an earphone from the ticket office and then standing at various positions to hear a commentary.
It is also worth remembering that you can purchase one ticket allowing you to visit many other of the islands attractions at a discount.
