“Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2008

We arrived at the Hotel about 10.30 a.m. in the pouring rain and stood at reception for some time, the porter drew the attention of a rather a terse receptionist who informed us that we could not book in until 2.00 p.m. no mention of would you like a cup of tea etc, just that we could leave our cases.

Our reservation had been booked way back last April, and we were allocated a room that you could just about walk around the bed, and the part in the wardrobe for hanging clothes was about twelve inches wide, no way big enough for two people staying for a week to hang their clothes. After contacting Management we were offered another more spacious room, but the wardrobe was the same size, both rooms had the most gloomiest outlook - a brick wall.

The corridors were very narrow and the house cleaning was not good, the carpet could have done with a vacuum.

Breakfast was O.K. and was nice to see smiling waitresses, but the servery was not kept topped up and nine times out of ten there was a queue for either eggs or toast.

The staff in the Amber bar, were calling last orders at 10.20 p.m., and breathing down ones neck to drink up, with a quip that we could take our drinks upstairs.

All in all we found the staff in the hotel very cold and did not put themselves out to make people welcome.

In view of the above I would not recommend this hotel to any friends.

There was nobody at reception when we arrived. After several minutes, an unpleasant receptionist arrived from the adjacent office - though she could quite clearly see us waiting for her attention. We arrived at 11.30, and despite the torrential rain, were told we could leave our luggage, but the room would not be available till 2pm. No offer of a seat, or any kind of refreshment.

The room was of good size, but clearly in need of attention. There was mould on the bathroom wall, a window (hidden behind a curtain) was absolutely filthy. The TV gave only a fuzzy picture. The building works just outside our window were noisy and started at 6.30am each morning. The view from the window was of a decrepit part of the hotel, and a wall. The noise from people using the pub next door continued till the early hours.

The corridors are curiously narrow, and very hot. The lift apparently has a mind of its own, and often took us to a floor other than ours. Although we were directed to the 2nd floor, there was a walk through several narrow fire doors, then steps down to an extraordinarily narrow corridor, at the end of which was our room. A sign on a door in the corridor said "Fire Exit" - it was a locked cupboard door about 2 feet wide. Not the place to escape for a portly gent like me!

The breakfasts (the only meals we ate there) were good for the first day. On the day of our departure, having waited ages for fried eggs to arrive (along with 8 other people), the baked beans ran out! Another lengthy wait, only to be provided with cold beans, apparently straight from the tin!

We asked for a late departure, but that wasn't possible.

The staff at reception were universally unhelpful, if not blatantly uncaring and rude. The restaurant staff, on the other hand were charming, and as helpful as they possibly could be.

The management of this hotel needs to look carefully at the way their staff present themselves.

I wouldn't recomment this hotel to anyone.

For the price they charged, it was well below any standard I would ever expect.

Cold baked beans indeed!!!

Have just returned from a week's stay at the Chesterhouse. The first room we got had the loudest extractor fan in the world outside the window. Some rooms also have thin partitions, so our neighbours could be heard periodically chatting through the night. Complained and got a better room, but that was facing the sea front and Jaks Bar opposite plays fairly loud music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Breakfast is okay, but most of the staff are surly robots without a smile to their name. For most of the stay we had to ask them for coffee and one morning were so annoyed with their lack of attention we got up and helped ourselves.

Dinner, frankly, was aweful. Most of the veg is the same and all of it tasteless. Not much variety and several meals consisted of mince in some form. Pastas claggy and unimaginative and mostly pasta was the only meal available to vegetarians.Desserts mostly frozen gateaux with occasional 'instant whip' desserts and fruit salad. Gateux usually our an hour before the meal and uncovered. After the first two nights, we ate out.

This is the only hotel I've stayed in where we had to clean the bathroom and toilet. Neither appeared to have been cleaned for some time and the floor was, frankly, dirty. No one hoovers your room either.

Some staff are friendly, but that doesn't compensate for poor quality.

On arrival to our room the first thing I noticed was the mis- matched furniture,
the bathroom was none to clean, the shower tray had a build up of residue that came of with a good scrub, the grouting on the tiles is black and unappealing, their were long black hairs on the tiles (I am blonde and my husband is bald ) also the mirror was badly cleaned,
the chair in the bedroom has a seat that had not yet been secured to the base therefore falls of causing a potential fall,
Breakfast had a reasonable choice of foods, albeit that the staff on duty stood by the coffee machine for most of breakfast one staff member was drinking coffee from a blue mug whilst chatting with three other staff members, who took to the bar area to continue their chat before we left the breakfast room,
for the price of this Hotel I would have expected more, i would not recommend this Hotel to others.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in April. As it was only 3* we decided to book one of the better rooms - an executive room with a sea view - and we weren't disappointed. Our room was very spacious and had recently been re-decorated. It had 2 huge bay windows from which we could see the whole of Douglas bay. The sofa was also perfectly positioned to sit and watch the world go by whilst enjoying a complementary mug of tea/coffee and biscuits.
The breakfast room was bright and airy, again with sea views. The selection of hot and cold food was good and staff were friendly. We didn't eat there in the evening as the entertainment (keyboard player/singer) was aimed at an older clientele. We did have an enjoyable meal in the trendier basement bar/restaurant though.
There's a large pub next door which regularly has live music - we saw a great local rock band while we were there. We also ate downstairs in the pub restaurant, the food was delicious.
The hotel is perfectly situated on the promenade and it's easy to get around the island by bus, electric tram and steam train - we used all 3!

Booked this hotel as a 2 star hotel and was amazed, we had a sea view room which was huge, very clean with crisp white bedding and a clean bathroom with a power shower and large corner bath.the hotel staff were very accomodating and placed our valubles in the hotel safe on request.
The bar and restaraunt which is in the basement of the hotel is lovley, and the food is out of this world, staff are very helpful and has door staff after 9pm as there is a lively and fun atmosphere.
the breakfast room has sea views and is clean and spacious with an excellent choice of english breakfasts and cereals, the chef and all the staff including the night manager were wonderful and i am planning to return shortly with my family.

Our stay at the hotel booked as a packaged with GrandUK holidays .Was awful the room was dismal and out side of the window was a large extractor fan which erupted at 7-00am and nearly shot us out of bed .Meal times where chaotic with large numbers of people falling over one another to get luke warm food off a unkept counter. The entertainment left a lot to be desired .Access to the rooms via the lifts which only carried two people at a time made it very difficult to get too and from your room expecially for the ederly people on our coach. All in all very disappointing
