The camera Obscura is a great Victorian gem unfortunately the opening hours are very limited . It's not going to set your world alight but at £2 entry it's worth every penny. Run by volunteers who were helpful and happy. Well worth the walk up the hill.

This was an amazing experience and suitable for all ages - it was a wonderful invention and when you entered the obscura the 11 views were really good - although it was a little overcast when we went recently. You could also go outside and look back on the obscura and the people inside could see you. It is run by volunteers who are more than helpful and explain how this obscura came about. The small charge is more than worth it.

“Victorian At its Best”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

This camera obscura was very popular in the 1880's up to about the 1980's when it closed and was in danger of being lost for ever. However it was restored and is now once again a great visitor attraction. The views of Douglas Day and the hills in the distance are stunning. Not to be missed.

“Camera Obscura Well Worth A Visit!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

This is a great example of a “Victorian age” built Camera Obscura still in original condition. This one was first opened in the 1890’s and the full name for it is The Great Union Camera Obscura. It is located on Douglas head and has great views of the harbour, lighthouse and Douglas bay. Unlike some Camera Obscura’s this one has 11 lens and screens to look at giving almost a 360° view as you walk around it inside unlike some that have one lens which is rotated. I found this a very interesting building / attraction and the location as great. It’s only open during the summer months on weekends and some bank holidays and only if the weather is not to cloudy or heavy rain as the best images are seen on bright sunny days. You can tell when it is open as the flag will be flying outside nearby when it is. It is staffed by volunteers from the Victorian society and they are all very helpful with information about it and other local attractions. There is plenty of parking on Douglas head (near Manx radio) but there are a number of steps down or up if you come from below near the inner harbour where there is also parking. There is a slightly easier path down from Douglas head with only a few steps then slopping path which would be easier for wheel chair access however wheel chair access into the actual Obscura is not really possible as the width of door is limiting. The cost is £2 per adult and £1 for kids over 12 or the slightly older adult. Kids under 12 free if accompanied by adults. Take a flask and sandwiches with you and enjoy the views sat on the benches nearby. This really is well worth a visit when you are in the area.
