Very well done and a wide mix of the IOM past, recent and distant. There is a very good section on motorbike racing with some fine examples of bikes through the ages. The political affiliation with the UK is interesting, I had no idea there was still an example of Saxon government in existence.

I've lived in the Isle of Man for 13 years and although I have visited the museum to see the Wildlife photography exhibition that visits each year I have never actually looked around the museum. To be fair I still haven't seen it all but I was very impressed with the first section of the main museum.

The exhibits are very informative and tell about the history of the island with some 'archaeological finds' on display.

It's totally free so well worth a visit - just a pity that they always seem to be closed on a Sunday afternoon when I would be most likely to have time to visit.

We spent a whole morning here and learnt so much. We were two adults but the museum is great for children as well. We had coffee in the cafe and they serve some gluten free cakes/puddings which is definite bonus. Prices were very reasonable and the Museum itself is free. All the staff are very friendly and knowledgable.

It starts off on the wrong foot, the finger posts in Douglas point in the wrong direction & when you do find one near to the museum for some reason it sends you through a multi-storey car park & not in entrance on the corner of the Road OK so you have arrived, DON'T think about having lunch all the tables are reserved for locals (actually probably for the staff) the food sounds quite good & with a little bit of common sense you could get quite a few more table in but that would mean a bit more work for the staff. The museum itself looks to be very good & well laid out but visitors obviously come second to bureaucracy, please get business-like .

Do visit the Manx Museum in Douglas which gives a complete and detailed overview of the history of and life on the Isle of Man from the earliest times until the modern era. There is so much to take in that I found it heavy going so if you have time, I would recommend going more than once or at least devoting several hours with a break in the café. As it indoors, it obviously lends itself to a visit on a rainy day. I did find it difficult to find in the back streets above Douglas even though I had a map so knew roughly where I was going. I followed a sign but at a crucial junction by the Tynwald building there was no sign indicating the need to bear right so I went the wrong way, eventually retracing my steps when I realised I was lost. Entry is free and the experience very worthwhile.
