We make an annual pilgrimage to the Isle of Man each year for the TT and stay in Douglas at a home stay which is always first class. We often walk past and longingly look through the revolving doors and usually comment "Far too posh for us!" as during TT fortnight this is where all the big teams stay and if you are going to run into one of your heroes this is the place to be!
Anyway, This year we decided we would also like to go to the Classic GP in August. We knew our regular accommodation was fully booked so we decided to treat ourselves to a hotel. We searched the internet and, to be honest, The Sefton was by far not the most expensive so we took the plunge and booked it. Our room was a basic room but it was lovely, large and well furnished with a huge bathroom. The room was very well equipped and spotless with ironing facilities as well as a fridge with complimentary water, tea and coffee and toiletries. My only observation (and it's not a complaint) is I would have preferred a quilt on the bed instead of sheets and blankets and feather pillows as I really dislike hollow fibre one's but that's my own preference.
The breakfast was buffet style and was first class. It offered everything you could possibly want as well as an a la carte menu that offered things like Manx kippers and smoked salmon with scrambled egg. To be honest I never felt the need to dip into this menu as what was on offer was superb but my husband and our friend had Manx kippers one morning and said they were lovely! I must comment on the sausages on the regular buffet. I am not a huge sausage fan but these were gorgeous and I found myself having a couple every morning!
Sir Norman's bar had a nice friendly atmosphere and the prices were very reasonable considering it was a hotel. We like the local beers brewed on the island, this was 50p more expensive than what we usually pay in our local when we visit the island. They also did food which, although we didn't have any, looked and smelt very good and again was reasonably priced.
I would agree with previous comments that the decor does need a bit of updating but if you want to stay in a good old fashioned hotel with a bit of history, excellent location and friendly staff where, when you consider they were fully booked, so very busy, nothing was any trouble for them I would recommend here. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to again at least we can walk past now and say with smug grins on our faces "We stayed at the Sefton!"
