Sefton Hotel
Ranked #11 of 15 Hotels in Douglas
Reviewed January 4, 2013

I stayed at this hotel twice for business, it is definitely the best hotel in Isle of Man but i have mixed feelings about it. The hotel is okay. That pretty much sums it up. The staff are friendly, the location is good and the atrium is pretty - i can't fault the professionalism. The first time i stayed I got a standard room without a view. As it wasn't a leisure break, i wasn't too bothered but it was 3* standard at best and I could hear the generators at the back and basically overlooked rubbish bins etc. The entire hotel seems a little...tired. The second time i stayed i requested a room with a view overlooking the atrium which was much better. The breakfast was lovely but the most disappointing part of my stay was that on BOTH occasions, the pool was unavailable due to renovation or maintenence. I think that a 4* hotel should have longer opening hours for the pool area (considering my first stay was during bank holiday week during the TT so peak time!) also, it should be left open longer as in the day it is often closed for swimming lessons etc! I was not advised of this prior to my stay either. I wouldn't ever choose to go to the Isle of Man, as there isn't much to do...although it is incredibly pretty it has the air of a once lovely resort but now Douglas seems little tired and dated as a whole.

Room Tip: Specify a room overlooking the atrium if you are a leisure traveller!

As you drive along the promenade in Douglas it looks like any typical seaside experience with a row of hotels that appear to have been here for centuries.

Arriving at the Sefton, the registration process was quick and easy and soon I was in my way to my room. I had booked a Junior Suite and do not get confused as all rooms are accessed by lifts with a specific colour.

My room was clean and comfortable with a fridge containing complimentary water and milk for the hosted tray of tea's and coffe - a great selection.

The hotel is superbly located with the Gaiety Theatre and and Town Centre moments away.

Norman's bar dedicated to Norman Wisdom offers a range of snacks and I had dinner the first night and lunch the following day. What's very good is the friendliness of the bar staff which for lonely traveler is great to have some conversation.

Breakfast is served on the first floor with impressive views of the ocean. A good selection but some of the European Staff could be more welcoming.

Finally, I enjoyed my stay and my room had a nice balcony overlooking the atrium which was novel and pleasing.

Room Tip: Views of the inner atrium are well worth booking and junior suites are quite comfortable

Although refurbished some years ago, there is a real feel of quality about the atrium rooms. A clever reuse of what in the old days would have been the less than attractive rooms at the rear of the hotel. A well designed water garden fills the space and atrium rooms have a relaxing balcony overlooing this pleasant space.

Rooms are on the borderline of needing a refresh and I still can't understand the tiny shower tray with an ill fitting curtain in an otherwise large bathroom. the water floods the floor. One to look at.

So why a real let down? Answer - SERVICE

On arrival I tried to book a table for dinner to entertain a client also staying at the hotel. Of course the Gallery retaurant was the choice as the food is excellent, great ambiance and a good reputaton. What did we get? For some unfathomable reason, the main restaurant of the hotel had been booked out to a private party. No alternative provision for restaurant quality food had been made. There were options. The hotel has other private rooms to accommodate a dining party - why waste the main restaurant? If they had to use the Gallery sapce, why not utilise the Harris Restaurant (only used for breakfast) as an alternative retaurant for the evening serving the Gallery menu?

It got worse. Sir Normans Bar, serving glorified bar food, was over run with pre theatre diners. The receptionist indicated that it would be unlikely that we would be able to dine in the hotel but she would try to appeal to the bar to fit us in. Great. So from a quality restaurant meal we were reduced to bar food.

Many other residents had given up and were exiting the hotel in search of food. This is not the behaviour of a 4 star hotel.

Poor service continued in the morning where the checkout became a farce. Staff could not operate the terminals resulting in an agry queue developing. We were late for our meeting and many others were in the same boat.

Not an experience for the management to be proud of...

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We do pride ourselves in our customer service and I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion. We have noted your comments and will review and address accordingly. On the plus side, we are glad that you felt the Atrium rooms had a "feel of quality" about them and were able to enjoy the water garden from your balcony.

I joined a colleague for dinner in the Sir Normans bar. The menu seems to be the same as when i was last on the isle of man five years ago. The food is nothing to write home about and not what you would expect to find in a 4* hotel although the prices are! well over £4 for larger.
The staff were busy watching tv and failed to notice our glasses were empty which going by the prices wasnt too bad for us but the place wasnt that busy. just three other tables in.
It makes you feel like you are in the way and you are bothering them away from the tv.. Customer service??? No sign of a manager in the bar at all when we were there.
I had fish and chips and about a million peas, well it looked like it, plate had finger prints on it also. its basic but means a lot when its advertised as a 4* hotel give us 4* service or dont bother.
I would have been better in a chippy.
music was so loud it was hard to have a conversation, strange to listen to music and have the tv on silent..... one or the other maybe wise, change the menu and train the staff to smile.

We are only home from a weekend conference in which we stayed at the sefton. First impressions were average.. Pretty old fashioned but still had a comfy feel.. Check in was flawless.. We where in room 306 and when the lift opened we thought we had stepped back in time.. Brown very worn carpets and walls up to rooms very very tatty.. We opened our door and the disappointment continued the curtains where mustard and the room was very dated.. The room was clean and bathroom was lovely but bedroom was awfully decorated and needs refurbed.. We went to reception and complained about the room and asked to be moved the reception staff where lovely and very accommodating.. We where moved to room 218 and we got a sea veiw but again the room was very very old fashioned and tatty.. The hotel staff and service was 100% but the rooms we got where a huge let down.
