I arrived late on a Saturday evening and was checked-in immediately and pointed in the direction of a small but very clean and well-appointed single room. The hotel bar is a nice place to end the evening with a good choice of drinks and friendly ambience. The one downside to the hotel was the breakfast. It was awful - it seemed that everything was deep fried and most definitely not cooked to order. All things being equal though, a decent hotel at a very reasonable price - I would most definitely use it again

Room Tip: Rooms with a sea-view are a bonus

I enjoyed the Empress but it does appear to promise much with its really glam art deco style bar, reception and dining. The first impression of the accommodation is slightly less than glam when your expectations are set quite high by the Art Deco reception. The hotel is a bit "Fur coat and no knickers" if that translates where you come from? My room was neat, tidy, a little modest in size with no view of any kind, indeed there were air condition units outside that hummed most of the night, but my room wasn't air conditioned, so I had to have the window open. The bathroom was clean. There is a lift, but the floors don't match where the lift stops so you still have some stairs to negotiate. I went down to reception to ask for an iron and ironing board and was expected to cart it up the stairs myself. Bar meals are limited in scope, and could be classed as pub meals-gammon or burger and chips etc. I didn't use the main restaurant but the All you can eat restaurant downstairs (where breakfast is served) is fun, with a good choice of Chinese and Indian dishes that can be mixed and matched in any way- but it's more mild than fire. Breakfast is fairly good with a wide choice although they cater for day trip coach parties so it can get busy and the uber efficient staff can clear your table whilst you are browsing for seconds. The staff are efficient rather than warm-most are Eastern European so that may be a cultural thing. Not a lot of banter.
i asked to use the steam room and sauna and got the impression that it isn't used often, as i had to wait 20 mins for the steam to get up to speed, but the sauna was on so i popped in there first. The sauna was hot rather than boiling, and no water was around to throw on the coals. They advertise "treatments" but the area for this looked like it was being refurbished in july2013.

i would go back and stay there again, but I would not be taken in by the glam front office, and now know what to expect from the rooms, and if needed i would ring down and ask that the iron be bought up, and I would try to show more restraint in the "All you can eat buffet"!

Room Tip: Get a room on a floor where the lift stops if you have mobility issues, try for a seafront view if you can.

I stayed here for 1 night on business, which was booked at the very last minute.

LOCATION:

The Hotel is located directly on the seafront in Douglas with wonderful views of the beach and harbour. The local shops are within a 10 minute walk from the hotel, or should you require to get to Tesco Supermarket a taxi is you best option which costs £5.50.

HOTEL ROOMS:

I was allocated a room on the first floor (Room 151), on entering the room it is small in size with a view of another room, which wasn't great. The room did not feature any air conditioning which made the room quite uncomfortable. The bathroom was well equipped and clean, the power shower is awesome! There must have been some sort of generator just outside of my room which was very loud so sleep was disturbed. You may want to bring your own pillow, as there is only 1 on the bed!

THE HOTEL FACILITIES:

The Empress Hotel has nice facilities. The Piano bar in the reception are is a nice place to relax with a drink, or the restaurant where a extensive menu is available, however maybe abit on the expensive side. The breakfast which was in the lower restaurant was good, with a nice choice of hot and cold options.
The staff were welcoming and attentive.

OVERALL:

It is a nice hotel, probably among the top 5 hotels in the Douglas area. Just the loud 'generator', lack of Air Conditioning and extra pillows lets the property down.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room.

Stayed at the Empress Hotel during the Isle of Man TT race week and would thoroughly recommend it! As we were travelling over to the island by bike we were able to post a large box of our belongings over to the hotel in advance which they stored for us and then had put in our room ready for our arrival - a great help! We had a good sized sea facing room which if you're a light sleeper can be noisy during TT week if you have the windows open but it was no problem for us and the view was wonderful anyway. We only ate breakfast at the hotel which was really nice and lots on offer so it set us up well for the day. All the staff are very welcoming and helpful and the house keeping is excellent, rooms very clean and comfortable. Would stay again.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are lovely but if your a light sleeper may be noisey if the window is open. Ladies with long hair take your own hairdryer!!!
