The train trip to Port Erin is a must, we travelled on the Rail Ale train to a beer festival there. A thoroughly good night.

It was quite expensive and the train was rather dirty.
Although the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Fun and comfy ride past some wonderful property. Great out of season when it's wonderful and quiet a whole carriage to ourselves.

“Great scenic trip through the Isle of Man”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

On our recent trip to the Isle of Man we rode the steam trains countless times. There is a station a short walk from the airport (Ballasalla) as well as a drop/off, pick/up point directly in front of the airport. We flew in to Ronaldsway airport and then immediately walked a short distance to the Ballasalla train station to buy tickets. They sell these three day Island Explorer tickets which give you unlimited access on all forms of transport practically. We used them mostly for the steam train and some busses as well. We took the steam train from Ballasalla to Port Erin to get to our hotel and then later took the entire ride from Douglas to Port Erin, which was about an hour long ride. It takes you through beautiful scenic areas of the Island and is a great unique way to see the Island.

All of the stations are set in the older time period and the cabins also set you back. It sets the scene of putting you in the shoes of someone from 100 years ago and what they may have experienced on the Island. The Island is also great for this as it is not really built up at all. You can actually feel like you went back in time to an earlier period.

Each cabin car is set in the decoration of the period and is somewhat private as well. This was great when traveling with kids but would be great for a romantic time together as well.

All of the train people are very nice and one time we were running a bit late, but they held the train for us until we boarded. Everyone is very helpful.

My son is a big fan of Thomas the tank engine as well and the Isle of Man is practically a model for that. My two year old son probably felt like he was in all of the Thomas books and shows he has watched. It was great for him.
