“Small and in need of renovation”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

We have just returned from this hotel and was quite disappointed after reading the tripadvsor comments. Our room was extremely small and barely big enough for a single, the on-suite was not much bigger that a cupboard. There was not enough room for clothes and hanging space was difficult as a normal size hanger made the small tallboy door unable to close. We did complain and was told they agreed with us, that did not really help. It is also in need of renovation very dated. Breakfast was fine and plenty of it. The hotel is situated at the far end of the Promenade and not near the main shops and bars, but within walking distance of the Electric Railway which is a must to do. The Steam Railway is the other end of Douglas, but local buses and trams run very regularly to that end. Quite a long walk. Laxey well worth a visit and so is Port Erin, recommend a Crab Baguette in the Cosy Nook by the Lighthouse on the front there, a very pretty Port. If flying in get the bus from the Airport bus stops right outside of airport doors and outside the Edelweiss (ask for Little Switzerland stop Douglas only £3.50 not £25 which is the cost of a taxi)

Room Tip: Dont get room 214 too small for couples

Dear Cazz13,

On first receipt of your review we were extremely puzzled as we thought it had been incorrectly posted against the Edelweiss - It really is so very different in content and nature to our usual very positive comments.
We have since discovered that you have taken the time to review us in exactly the same way on other sites but on a positive note this allowed us to verify your booking and post this response.

I would firstly like to point out with respect that contrary to how your review reads you made no mention of a complaint at any other point during your stay until you were about to leave.
Unfortunately this is not constructive as there would be very little we could do about anything as you walk out the door!

Upon check out, when I enquired if you had enjoyed your stay you said to me that you felt the room was too small – nothing further.
As I explained to you at the time I was sorry you felt this way and the room more than meets the minimum standard requirements for a Double room in dimensions. As all accommodation we are regularly inspected by the Tourist Board and the Inspectors have never found a problem with this room in any of the areas that you mention in your review.
We in fact score highly in all areas of accommodation and quality.
Incidentally the room dimensions are clearly displayed in the room description when you booked.
In our last inspection the assessor in fact commented on the good quality of furniture – we find your comments unique to say the least!

We are very approachable people it is very important to us that you enjoy your stay – we are in the business of a friendly three star graded guest house in the beautiful Isle of Man and not a prison!

Unfortunately it is not our policy to discount as was suggested at check out as the service (Bed and breakfast) that you paid for was exactly as described upon booking and there was no mention or complaint questioning the quality of or any other aspect of the service you received.

Ironically in other reviews you praise us highly for our excellent quality and standard of bedding / towels and their cleanliness. We would like to thank you for your positive comments here, we feel this is a very basic standard we can offer our guests as cleanliness is very important to us and many of our guests rate us very highly in this area.

In conclusion we note your comments that the Edelweiss is “small and in need of refurbishment”.
The building is well over 100 years old but is in excellent state of repair we work tirelessly to ensure this we are very proud of our building in fact we recently won an award from the Douglas in Bloom Best Guest House.
We also receive many positive comments about the classic black and white theme that is a feature throughout many of the bedrooms and public areas. This has become a feature of the building that ties in with the pretty outside “Swiss Style” black and white theme that makes us stand out so much from the crowd!
No wonder we have so many passing visitors taking pictures of the building!!

We would like to think we tastefully maintain the building with a modern contemporary comfort whilst retaining the many original features such as the beautifully restored ceiling in our large guest lounge.
We are much larger in size than most Guest Houses so we do not feel the description as “small” is particularly valid as we have 18 bedrooms but again that is no secret and clearly advertised as is our Three star rating.

We have no secrets and welcome any questions regarding our accommodation from future guests – we want people to be happy with us.

We would like to thank you however for taking the time to review the Edelweiss and hope we have cleared up any areas of concern future guests reading this may have regarding your review.
The isle of Man is awash with history and natural beauty. You opted to stay in the historic Victorian Capital of Douglas - perhaps the Isle of Man was just not the place for you.

Yours sincerely,

S.A. Clague
(Manager - The Edelweiss).

Just returned from a 5 night stay here and we would highly recommend this hotel. The breakfasts were excellent with all kinds of cereal, yoghurts, fruit, including grapefruit. There was an array of cooked bacon, sausages, tomatoes, scrambled eggs, hash browns and beans. Could not fault it for choice and taste, very nice. As we sat down for breakfast we were greeted by Alex asking would we like tea or coffee and toast. He is a very friendly host. His wife, Shirley was very helpful with local information. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Would certainly re-visit this hotel again. Highly recommended.

Welcoming and helpful hosts - Shirley was happy to chat and provide local information at any time. Breakfast was plentiful, unlimited, self-service buffet which is faster than waiting to be served, hot food was hot and set you up for the day. And all at a great price. Strongly recommend to stay.

Shirley and Alex are hosts par excellence. They go the extra mile to ensure that you have a good time. Stacks of cereals fruit and freshly cooked breakfast and the best coffee on the island.
Rooms well decorated with modern bathrooms and even though close to the promenade, we did not experience any traffic noise. Very handy for the local buses and very close to the Manx Electric Railway. A very pleasant stay and like Arnie we will be back.

Room Tip: The higher the better

It was an absolute pleasure to have you both stay with us and look forward to seeing you again very soon.
If there was such a thing as Guest Advisor you would score five stars in every area.

We enjoyed staying at the Edelweiss Hotel. A good choice of food was presented at breakfast, with the hot choices always hot. The hotel we thought was situated in a nice position on the promenade as the trams and bus stops were within approx 100yds. We had a sea view, right at the top, a great position affording good views of the sea cat and ferries coming and going. The only fault we had of the room was there was no shower, just the bath. The room and bathroom was kept very clean and tidy during our stay.
We have never seen such a small lift, but it did cause much amusement to those watching in the lounge as two people trying to get in together! Still it was much better than climbing the stairs to our room.
Overall we think it was good value, thank you all very much. Mick & Gill Flack.

Room Tip: Take the sea view room at the top of the hotel, good views, quiet.

Lovely hotel, well positioned at the far end of the promenade, so suggest the horse tram or bus from the ferry terminal. Made to feel very welcome by Shirley and Alex.
Room on the top floor, but there is a small lift thankfully. Rooms very clean and comfortable, with adequate tea and coffee. Breakfast fabulous...spoilt for choice. A very comfortable lounge to relax in if required.
If I were to return to the island, would not hesitate to stay there again, and would definitely recommend this place to stay, if ones requirements, were small and friendly and good value for money
