“Top childrens hotel”

Okay I've read the reviews and you must go to this hotel with your eyes wide open. Yes it's chintzy, yes it's old fashioned but it has everything you would want if your taking a toddler. It's damn perfect. Big plus's baby listening service it works really works, indoor soft play area, indoor swimming pool all of a very good quality. The outside space is massive again with an outdoor play area with a football goal and a putting green (Which needs looking after but it's playable). The food is great, as the hotel was not full it was not a buffet service but cooked too order. 4 courses in the evening too. The kids ate between 4.45 and 5.45 and adults at 7.00 till 8.30. What didn't work, well the hot water system crashed for a day and apart from that all was well. The manager and his wife were really helpful and there is a 'secret' post office nearby if you need emergencies otherwise Ventor is 10 mins away. People who say this a dump are misguided, look beyond the building and you'll see nothing better than very happy children having a great holiday becasue this is what the Old Park hotel is about 'Happy Children' We will back... Oh and there are cows, rabbits and birds to see from your windows if the children wake early...

Room Tip: Spindlers Suite is very good.

We had my daughters wedding here and the location and the accomadation we found to be excellent. The hotel was very clean and tidy and our room although a litle dated was massive with everything we needed. The food was very good and the staff were very friendly and helpful never got chance to try the pool or games room but it looked great. Would definatly recommend and would stay there again

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw looked good

I used to visit this hotel a lot when walking on the IOW about 15 years ago. At that time it was lovely, very secluded, with a friendly restaurant and bar, incredibly beautiful grounds and very welcoming - it even had an obstacle/commando course!

That was 15 years ago. Now it is a complete dump, utterly unwelcoming, completely closed off to any visitors and very, very run down. The grounds are totally unkempt, with building rubbish and junk just dumped in the old folly (which used to be a lovely place to sit), the obstacle course has long gone, as has the decent restaurant. One would be forgiven for thinking it had closed down, but alas it has yet to be put out of it's misery, or better still handed over to someone who could easily take it back to it's former heights.

By the way, the former bird park which used to be next door and a great attraction for families has gone, as has the bus service which used to link this place with the outside world. I'd so don't consider it without a car, but I wouldn't consider it with one, either.

Room Tip: Try a different hotel... or a time machine.

This was a hotel I used to go to about 20 years ago as a teenager for Sunday lunch so half the reason for staying now was nostalgic.

It's fair to say it hasn't been touched much since then but if you can cope without haute cuisine and luxury rooms then this could be the place to go with prices set accordingly.

The kids absolutely loved it because they were made to feel very welcome and the location is idyllic. The staff are also very friendly although sadly not many are locals as is often the case. Rooms are a bit shabby and the dining room is devoid of character but somehow that only added to the charm.

Would we go back - yes!

I have just spent four days at the Old Park Hotel with my partner and two children, aged 9 and 4. We were greeted by John the owner, who was very friendly, and a little eccentric which added to the charm of the place. If you're looking for a plush hotel, then this isnt it, but if you want friendly staff, a hotel with bags of character and happy kids, then the Old Park Hotel will be hard to beat. At first it was like stepping back in time and It took us a little time to get into the swing of things but by day two we felt like we were visiting an old friend. We had booked a famly suite in the West Wing, which consisted of a large room with double bed and a seperate, much smaller, room for the children. The children loved the bunk beds and actually slept much better than they ever do at home ! We normally eat together at home, so was unusual for us to have time on our own for dinner. On the first night the evening meal, for us and the kids, wasn't great. The hotel had just opened for the season so I think maybe the kitchen had a few teething problems. Our subsequent meals however were delicious, and very well presented. During adult mealtimes the children are entertained in the bar area by way of a DVD, which seems to amuse most of the kids long enough for parents to have a leisurely meal (unless you're lucky enough to have kids that will go to bed before adult dinner begins, and then you can use the highly recommended baby listening system). Everyone loved the badgers, who visit every night for their dinner just outside the patio windows. They also loved the soft play area so much it was hard to drag them away. There is a snooker table for over 12's, plus a pool table and table tennis in the games room. We used the swimming pool only once during our stay and again the children loved it. There was also a falconry show one evening, which was a big hit with young and old. There is a pebbly cove just a short walk through the woods where the children enjoyed crabbing in the rock pools. There is so much to do and see in the IOW if the weather is good but if you're unlucky to get bad weather then I can't think of a better hotel than this to keep the kids happy. We had such a great time that we will definately be booking again.....and again !!

The Old Park is not high luxury but I can hhonestly say that you do get a rest. It really is chhild friendly, not like places that just because they have a high chair claim to be so but 'tut and moan' and make you feel a nuisance with a child. The environment is not precious, the staff don't fuss over children, it is very safe and you get to eat your dinner in peace therefore the lack of luxury (not comfort) and the sometimes odd combinations on the menu are small price for me and my husband to pay.

Room Tip: Top Floor corner rooms in East Wing are brilliant.

A childrens hotel. Parents tolerated and provided with good food and wine to keep them happy.

We are the grandparents of Meersy77 and had a great time. It was much more like a house party with kids everywhere. The food I had was really good as was the wine, but some of the other choices were not quite as good (a gigantic pile of moules, with nothing else). Our room in the west wing was a bit small, but perfectly OK and had great character, it is going to be a childs room in a family suite next year.

The grounds and facilities are perfect for kids to enjoy, plenty of room and play equipment and no flower beds or anything else for the kids to damage, nice and wild.

The childrens entertainment seemed to go down well and allowed parents of the older children to have a meal relatively undisturbed although we enjoyed seeing the kids come in and out, it felt like home.

The owner was very friendly and helpful and they seemed to have things well organised for children to run wild in a controlled manner - quite an impressive feat. They also provide the meal leftovers to some very fat and greedy badgers, I have a video I might put on You-Tube.

The hotel is way out in the wilds, so would be a good site for a wildlife holiday, but a car is needed, and don't go if you cannot stand children!!
