I repeatedly return to this hotel. It is rather special and although a large hotel still retains the
Personal touch and all the staff are specially selected and some have been in hotel for some years
The hotel strives to make special offers and themes. It is an old fashioned sort of place no
Fitness centre or spa but small outside pool for summer. A significant point is that lots of
Guests stay in hotel all day because there is full service all day. Only criticism is that they used to
Serve coffee after meal in conservatory which was included in meal. Now unfortunately it's an extra. Rather petty but no other complaints. Rooms comfortable with cool linen sheets. And
Very good food from chef who has been at hotel for quite some years.

Room Tip: The front facing rooms overlook the s ea but sometimes you receive an upgrade from standard

My husband and I stayed at The Royal with my parents for a weekend away. The hotel staff are incredibly attentive and during our time there we felt very welcome and a little bit spoilt. The hotel itself is decorated and presented to a very high standard, with a touch of luxury. The food at the hotel was some of the best I have ever eaten. Top hotel.

I booked the hotel for a get together of 16 old friends - eight couples. We arrived on the Friday and checked out on Sunday for a half board arrangement. This included dinner one evening in the main dining room and for the second evening in a room just for ourselves.

All of us had a great time. The food and service was excellent, and the setting, grounds and views are lovely. The staff were really nice, friendly and unpretentious. Everybody congratulated me for finding the hotel!

I disagree with the person below who said "families beware", we have just returned from our first stay at the Royal (we have 2 young children) and I found it a lovely experience. The hotel staff were always friendly and helpful, from reception to the bar staff and restaurant staff. The hotel offers a children's High Tea which our children had every day. It was three courses, good quality, a good choice and generous portions and the children loved it! We chose to put our children to bed at their usual time of 7pm and then used the hotel's listening service while we had a drink in the bar and our dinner. The food was really good and beautifully presented and although we were staying for 4 nights there was a good choice so I didn't have the same thing twice and everything on the menu was tempting and delicious. On the first night our dinner was only slightly spoilt by some annoying children in the restaurant who spent most of the time roaming around the table or lying on the floor at my husband's feet, we were unfortunately at the table next to them. This really would have been an issue for us if it had been the case every night, as having got our 2 to bed we wanted a peaceful and relaxing evening in the grand surroundings. I did not find the dining room stuffy at all, yes it is decorated in the style of the building, as one would hope but the staff are not at all stuffy, they are friendly and charming. After the first night children seemed to mostly eat in the Conservatory Brasserie. I do understand that the Royal welcomes children and it is difficult for staff to get the balance right between welcoming children but yet making sure adults, some of whom in the restaurant were not staying with children at all, had a relaxing evening. I am glad we achieved this for the majority of our stay. I would say the room decor was a little tired and old fashioned and the shower pressure was bit weak but overall we had a really lovely time, I would definitely recommend the hotel and would come back.

Just returned from our first stay at The Royal and am very glad to be home. The location of the hotel is excellent and the building is gorgeous but unfortunately the service was awful. Within ten minutes of entering the rather stuffy dining room I was asked rudely by the head waitress to, "Keep the kids noise down a bit"- they had hardly opened their mouths. At breakfast we waited for 30 minutes for our coffee to be served and the children's supper later took 1 hour and 40 minutes - I finally lost my patience and made a complaint. After this the service did improve although the atmosphere in the hotel is stuffy and tense. After our final meal (which was excellent) we retired to the bar where we were ignored and then after 15 minutes offered coffee. At 11.15 the lights were turned off behind the bar and we were left in no doubt it was time to go to bed. Families beware!

Running a hotel is a balancing act — this requires skill and judgement. In this particular case the children were using rather loud gaming consoles in our 2 AA Rosette dining room which caused issues for other guests trying to enjoy their evening meal. The Head Waitress received complaints and therefore politely asked for the volume to be turned down. The delay in supper the following evening was because the guests were 20 minutes late. Easter was extremely busy and the restaurant bookings staggered to ensure that each dish was cooked to perfection. When a guest is late it occasionally takes longer for their food to arrive, simply because other guests orders have been taken and are being cooked. I am delighted that their meals were excellent however the unfortunate delay was a knock-on effect of the initial lateness.

Regarding the warning to families, yes, I agree we possibly should — families beware, you may not want to go home!

Arrived at the Royal to find this hotel did not live up to the reputation on Trip Advisor. It is not a young persons hotel and came across as a retirement home. The reception process was poor and were not asked when we wanted dinner but told when we could have it... We were told we should have per booked, which would have been fine had we been told when the booking was made
Found our room (on our own) and although it looked comfortable and clean, it was dated in its decor.
Therefore we checked straight out, deposit lost but glad we didn't pay the full rate as we then found that there is better value for money elseware, even taking into account the deposit. The reception did offer a different room, but when we said it was not for us there was no question as to why or an offer of our deposit back.

It is very difficult to live up to a reputation in ten minutes and I think that the crux of this review is that our hotel was not to this couple’s liking. I acknowledge that taste is a subjective matter and that’s why our website has a gallery. However I do understand that the couple, for their own personal reasons, felt disappointed but a 2 star review is harsh. To redress the balance we have had lovely reviews in Tatler who describe the hotel as ‘elegant and truly stylish,’ and more recently The Good Food Guide who state, ‘...the Royal Hotel harks back to the belle epoqué glory days of Ventnor and retains a breezy, retro panache.‘ There are also a significant amount of excellent reviews by our customers on Tripadvisor - customers who include brides and bridegrooms, mothers, grandfathers and probably even great grandmothers. Which brings me to the ageist content of this review - I find this rather troubling and sad as the Royal welcomes people of all ages from pensioners to young children. As Confucius says, ‘Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.’

We have stayed at this hotel many times in the last 14 years, and it has always lived up to expectations. It has indeed been completely refurbished in the last few years, which has greatly enhanced this beautiful Victorian Hotel. The very excellent food is expertly served by professional staff who we have known for many years. They will always assist in any special dietary requirements,as long as they are made aware of these. We stayed in Room 20 (one of their Premier Rooms). The view is excellent, and the room has a sumptuous marble en suite bathroom with a roll top bath and walk in shower(only let down slightly by the lack of water pressure). We are already looking forward to a summer visit, where we can enjoy the wonderful garden and swimming pool.

Thank you so much for your review - it's lovely to have such great feedback and the staff will be delighted.

I am pleased that you like the new refurbishments - I feel that we are custodians of this great building and to hear that we have enhanced her is really wonderful. Incidentally the Royal is 180 years old this year!
