The Channel View Hotel

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 11, 2013

At our age of 86 my wife and I prefer a few short breaks each year at different hotels rather than longer holidays, and we have just returned from a three night 'half board' October break. This was our first visit to Shanklin's 'Channel View'' and we were impressed by everything about it. This is a medium sized holiday hotel, apparently privately owned and managed and so with none of the impersonality of larger more commercial chain hotels. Our friendly welcome on arrival by hotelier Gill (who escorted us personally to our room) was indicative of everything to come. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the dining room menu excellent and substantial with considerable choice, our room quite large and extremely clean - as were all the public rooms. This is an outstanding holiday hotel providing a really first class service at a reasonable price. We have promised ourselves a return visit when we can, and meantime send many thanks to Gill and all the staff!.

A couple of hints if you do not know the area:
The sea front promenade is close to the hotel, and is very pleasant to walk along, but at the bottom of a very steep hill. Best to walk down and come back by the excellent beach lift, but bear in mind that this does not operate in the evening, at least in October when we were there.
If travelling home on the Red Funnel car ferry to Southampton avoid Friday afternoon sailings if possible, because they are crowded in October and probably even more so at the height of the season..

My wife and I enjoyed this family run hotel, selected by the coach company as their base for a 7 days Holiday. On arrival we had a most pleasant surprise for a 3 star hotel. The hotel was situated overlooking the beach and bay and also within easy reach of the town by foot. Our room was large, airey, exceptionally clean and well equiped with good quality bedroom furniture with towels and bed linen changed on a very regular basis. Our meals were extremely good and well served by the cheerful dining room staff. If you dont want to put weight on then ask for small portions. Menus very varied and catered for all tastes. Nothing was too much trouble from all of the staff the moment we arrived until our reluctant departure. We would say that this is the best 3 star hotel we have ever stayed in. Far better than many 4 star hotels.

Room Tip: Cannot comment as only stayed there for the first time.

It was raining when we arrived at the hotel but as soon as we walked into reception to be greeted by Gill the wetness just evaporated. From the moment you walk throught the door you just know the holiday is going to be what you want it to be.
We had our usual room which as always was spotlessly clean and our friends were also very impressed with their room. The cleanliness is the same throughout the hotel. The cleaning staff as always do a wonderful job. For me the highlight of the holiday has to be the food, you have so much Joice for breakfast, and the food is perfectly cooked. The dinner likewise is just superb, a good choice, wonderfully cooked, and you can be served as quickly or as slowly as you wish. You never feel under any pressure to leave the restaurant.
I cannot understand what some people find to complain about, and we as a party have nothing but praise for the Channel View Hotel. Keep up the great work. We will be back

Pat and Gill

Room Tip: Premier plus rooms have to be the best option, sea views and the waves breaking at night.

This hotel is first class. Friendly and attentive staff. Excellent service all round and great food from the kitchen. Nothing is too much trouble.

Within walking distance of the Shanklin sea front and not far from the centre. Lift from the beach to the cliff top walk.

Our second visit and we hope for more.

Room Tip: Ask the owners and they will explain in detail the rooms available.

We have just returned from a first time weeks holiday at this hotel. From the minute we were welcomed to the hotel until we left yesterday we were treated as though we had been known for years. Friendliness respect and courtesy is the norm from all members of staff no matter what their title is. Food, menus, cleanliness, rooms, facilities brilliant. All the dining room staff take very good care of you but i could not forget to mention our waitress Olivia who was so nice friendly efficient and helpful if you had to give a star rating Olivia would get a five star. Both my husband and myself would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. We chose a premier plus room which was great lovely views comfortable and roomy. The walk in shower was very handy as my mobility is limited.Go on book it and treat yourselves.

We stayed at the end of August and have nothing but good things to say about this hotel. The staff were lovely, the room was very clean and of a good standard for its rating and we had lovely views over the sea. Breakfast was included and was really good - much better than I expected and good value. Having never been to the Isle of Wight before and this being a quick last minute 'reminder of childhood holiday' for my husband I really won't sure what to expect but this friendly, clean, efficient and well located hotel delivered more than I hoped. Nice to see a small hotel doing so well!!

Room Tip: We had a sea view room.

Like many of the other recently written reviews on this site we have just returned from a return visit to this lovely hotel. The room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfasts were more than sufficient and the evening meals were of a high standard. We chose the premier room with a four poster bed as we were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary and the views from the room were great. Would not hesitate in recommending the hotel to family and friends and look forward to making a return visit in the coming years.
