A v friendly, seafront, real ale pub, with great food, though rooms nothing to write home about (comfy bed) unless you pay extra £10/night for a seafrontage balcony overlooking the beach and bay - but on Isle of Wight there's so much to do who wants to stay in anyway.
Staff seemed to go out of their way to help another guest with a dietary problem when we were there and they found my wife's lost jacket. Some reviews have felt it to be overpriced - maybe a little, but my research has revealed that this (£35/person/night B+B) seems to be the standard price for the similair hotels in the area (all with lesser bars and lower quality beers) and less than many hotels in Shanklin
It's right on the Esplanade by the Clock Tower bus stop, which is very handy - unless you want to leave Shanklin for a day out west as the first bus (open top) up to the main part of town isn't till 0930 and the most useful bus out of town is the 0925 - and it's a VERY hard VERY STEEP but pretty climb up to the High St. This drawback reappears in the evening as the last bus up is about 6pm - one way of getting a thirst + appetite I suppose, and food on the island tends to be high in both quality + quantity so excercise may be needed !
Not much breakfast choice - but great haddock and fabulous local sausages. For day + evening the pub menu and long specials board is long and the food excellent + always 3-5 real ales + a good cider on handpump - so it can get v busy.
There are 4 other pub/restaurants, all worth a visit, especially The Spyglass in Ventnor (good live jazz Friday nights) owned by the same people on the island and you get a good welcome in each if you say you are staying at The Steamer.

My husbands first time back from NZ after emigrating 17 years ago. Tourism doesnt seem to have improved standards. Chose The Steamer for position on the seafront with balcony and good reputation for food. The rate was expensive for what is offered. Room was shabby and very small and the bed was so lumpy we thought thank goodness its only 2 nights. The ensuite was so narrow you could stand with elbows bent and touch both walls.
Staff were obviously busy in the pub so guests didnt get much attention. However the food was good and the breakfast service excellant, perhaps they should forget the accommodation if this is the best they can do for over 80 pounds a night bnb and concentrate on the pub side
