Great staff and facilities, perfect for a short family camping trip

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 27, 2015
Our holiday to Lower Hyde was an extremely last minute decision, due to our originally planned holiday at a different resort on the Isle of Wight being cancelled accidentally by the company. So we set off to Lower Hyde knowing pretty much nothing about it, other than it had a pitch available for our tent!

We arrived quite late (10pm) which meant pitching the tent in the dark. Although the signage and road system weren't the easiest to understand, there was a friendly security patrol available to help us who took us straight to where we needed to be.

The tents and touring field is on a bit of a slope, so we realised once we had set up the tent that we needed to sleep in a certain direction otherwise we'd be rolling down the slope in the night! Some parts of the field are slightly flatter but in general it's all on a bit of a camber. There is plenty of space though, and the area is well kept. (Just a note - if you don't like birds it's not a place to visit as there was a massive group of crows that live there too and spent our entire stay patrolling around the field!).

The amenities block is one of the best I've ever used, with lovely clean and spacious toilets, showers, and sink units each with individual space for toiletries. The showers are push button ones and you do need to keep pushing the button every few seconds to keep water going which is a bit annoying but the water is good pressure and lovely and hot. There is also an individual baby change and toddler toilet which was very useful for us and the kids. The washing up facilities were excellent too.

The park has a great kids playground with well kept equipment and a good variety, tailored more towards older children 3+. The swimming was also a big hit - the indoor pool at Lower Hyde is quite small and filled up quickly (they operated a one in, one out system which sometimes means queuing) but the outdoor pool was also open and lovely and warm which made it very usable even in May. The waterslide was very much enjoyed by our five year old (the height limit is 1m which meant our 3 year old was just too short to try it). A big bonus of staying at Lower Hyde is that you get to use the neighbouring Landguard resort facilities too - the indoor pool there has a curly slide (also 1m height limit) and is bigger, with a surrounding bar area. Landguard also has a warm outdoor pool. We used all four pools and were very impressed with the cleanliness and the friendly lifeguards. The only downside is the tiny changing room on each site - only two rooms for changing at Lower Hyde and a small open changing area split by gender at Landguard. They were very crowded and it was difficult to get children changed easily. We noticed lot of families staying in caravans would get changed in their caravan and then walk to the pool in their togs but that wasn't an option for us really with the tent being quite far from all the pools.

The kids took part in two pool activities - paddle boats and the aqua roller - and really enjoyed them both. Each activity cost £4 which we thought was very reasonable.

The kids entertainment at the Show Bar was very good too. The staff went out of their way to make sure all the kids were included and having fun, and there were plenty of prizes and stickers for them to win. Bar prices were not too bad. Outside the bar and swimming pool there is an arcade, which you have to walk through to get to both. Of course, the kids wanted to play on all the flashing and beeping machines which was a bit annoying but on the plus side, there were 2p machines, and games costing from 10p so overall fairly affordable.

Lower Hyde is not far from Shanklin, and right next door to a Lidl, so there are services and places to visit within walking distance of the park. The closest beach is about a five minute drive away.

Considering we weren't sure what we were going to get, we have been very pleasantly surprised and had a great bank holiday weekend. If we go camping in the Isle of Wight again we would definitely go back to Lower Hyde.

Thank you for your recent review. We are sorry to read of the initial problems you experienced with your booking by Park Resorts but am glad that we were able to accommodate you on our Touring Field. Our Touring Wardens work tirelessly to keep the facilities spotless and I will pass your lovely comments regarding this on to them. As you mentioned we are in a rather hilly, wooded area so some of the ground is sloping and we do also have a lot of wildlife and birds on Park!! We are delighted that you took advantage of being able to use the facilities at our sister site Landguard which does have the bigger pool.
Lower Hyde has a great Teamstars and Sports Team who provide a number of activities for all age groups throughout the day and night. We are delighted that your family participated in these. It is wonderful that we were able to restore your faith in Park resorts and do hope that you visit as again in the future.

We stayed here for a long weekend Friday to Monday through the sun holiday. We were allocated a chalet behind the swimming pool and entertainment complex so it was ideally situated. The chalet itself was very tired looking although it was clean apart from clumps of hair in the broom and oven door falls down when opening but as we ate out all the time this didn't bother us. The entertainment was shocking apart from the Jersey Boys, all the other entertainment continued to mess around and amuse the kids even while singing. We have stayed at many holiday camps and this is the worst we have seen. The toilets were disgusting by 9pm each night with most of the cubicles running out of toilet roll, the baby changing is also there next to the hand dryer so while you are drying your hands you have to put up with the smell of dirty nappies!!! The entertainment bar staff were polite so were staff in bar/restaurant, girl who checked us in was helpful and friendly. The park is very clean and tidy and a very good location to get out and about.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on Tripadvisor. We are pleased that you were happy with the location of your accommodation. The chalets are conveniently located near to the Reception and main Complex. We are sorry that you were disappointed with the Entertainment. As a Family orientated Park we do provide a number of activities for children but we also cater for adults with visiting acts, such as the Jersey Boys and Teamstar Show during the evening. We apologise for the cleanliness of the toilets in the Club. They are checked regularly, but we also have a sign on the wall asking guests to inform the bar staff of any problems. Due to the layout of the toilets the Baby Changing unit is located in the only position available. It is great to read that you found the staff on Park to be friendly and helpful as we do all strive to deliver high standards of Customer Service. Thank you once and again.

Had a wonderful 2 weeks at Lower Hyde Tent and Touring Park. We had our small Campervan, Large Tent on a really good size pitch. Amenities are as usual, excellent. We were also, well looked after by the amazing team "Lyn and Marissa." who kept our toilets and showers in a good, clean condition, in spite of bad treatment of these facilities by some other visitors!! Always friendly and helpful, which added to our enjoyment of the holiday. Give them a Gold Star. Judi Martin and Adrian Wright

Fantastic park great value second visit here. Pitch sizes are very large, facilities are very clean and tidy and very little noise only tricky part is driving on to touring site you have to be careful for two way traffic downhill and round a bend but not a huge issue. Numerous activities supermarket at end of road great place to stay

Just returned from a week's stay at Lower Hyde holiday park with my husband and 20 month old son. We stayed in one of the new Platinum Lodges, which was absolutely fantastic - very spacious, well equipped and a really comfortable stay. As for the holiday park itself, it was lovely - a very nice setting, with lots of greenery. The entertainment complex and restaurant was good, very new and done up. We didn't use the indoor pool on the site, but did visit Landguard pool - that was ok, if rather dated. Overall though a very good experience, highly recommend and all of the staff we very friendly too!

Fantastic holiday park. We stopped for a week in a gold caravan on the norton vale road, the caravan we stopped in was ideal for us as there was a lot of space for our 3 month old daughters things, norton vale is an ideal area to stop in as its a very quiet street. The only thing I could say that needs improvement with the caravan is instructions for the timer on the boiler as we couldn't seem to get it working.

The park itself is very clean and well maintained, the restaurant serves delicious food and drink, although you expect to pay a premium for being on a holiday park I would say the prices are still fair!
We also used the indoor pool and whilst small it was great for small babies due to the temperature and it not being too deep, the only problem I would say with the pool is the changing area, personally I think it would be better if there was a family changing area with the baby changing table inside the cubicles as it was a pain for us to change our daughter and get ourselves dressed.

Overall I would 100% recommend this site and I'll more than likely visit again.

Thank you for your great 5 star review. It is wonderful to read that you were happy with your accommodation. Norton Vale is a quiet area on Park but is still near to the Complex and all weather Sports Court. We are pleased you dined in our Barnhouse restaurant which does serve great food at reasonable prices. We also have some great meal deals running as well as now being able to off Half Board options for guests. As you mentioned we do have a small indoor pool which suited your needs but guests are welcome to use the bigger pool at our sister site Landguard if they wish. We hope you will visit us in the near future.
