My partner and I booked the Somerton very last minute for a couple of days stay in IOW. The greeting at the hotel was very friendly and the this level of friendliness was continued throughout the stay. Breakfast was very good and we were impressed that you could order off the menu and little touches like cooking our eggs to death ( how we liked them) was carried out without a fuss. The price is reasonable and the location is convenient for Shanklin attractions. There is also a bus stop outside the hotel which is great if you haven't a car and you can access Newport and all other major towns/attractions from here.

Now the less positive; this hotel has the attitude of if it ain't broke don't fix it etc. it is very dated both in decor and routine - for instance if you are joining them for dinner you have to order your selection at breakfast. The menu has a very 70's feel and the rooms could do with sprucing up.The room itself is clean but basic and we had an excellent shower but the bathroom lacked any storage space or shelves/ hooks etc for toiletries.

My biggest disappointment was the very rude banging on our door on the day of checkout to remind us we have to leave at 10.30. Now admittedly they did this at 10.25 but I felt this totally unnecessary and at odds with the friendliness we had experienced throughout our stay.

This hotel would suit traditionalists but I'm afraid for me it doesn't warrant a return visit.

This 2 star AA hotel was a joke.. the bedroom was suitable but unfortunately the shower room was very very small. It had a standard two ft six by 2ft 6 shower-width of the room!
the handbasin was a very small hand rinse basin that my husband could only put one hand in at a time ! When he bent to wash his face his lower body jutted out into the bedroom and he hit his head on the small glass shelf .This was the size of a cupboard not a bathroom. It definitely does not warrant a two star rating given.

With Breakfast it was just as bad, you were given just one glass of fruit juice, no top ups (not self service) and cereal was one of the children size packets.
parking dreadful as not big enough for the size of the hotel

Room Tip: do not stay in room 12 !!

We were glad to get somewhere at a fairly reasonable price at short notice in Shanklin in August and the building itself is a charming Victorian building within a reasonably easy walk to the high street. Parking on site.

That said, it wouldn't be my first pick. The rooms at the back that we stayed in were updated and the beds comfy, but they were a bit musty and utilitarian and the shower rooms were poor - no working light above the sink, slightly dank and shower not great. I imagine if you are staying for a more acceptable length of time you might be given a more pleasant room at the front of the hotel.

Breakfast was well organised and acceptable, if basic and uninventive. The bar prices were reasonable and the lounge pleasant. The staff were definitely all efficient and friendly. The evening meal menu looked like it had been formulated in 1972 but we didn't eat there.

I would stay here again if I needed somewhere at short notice and they had availability, but I know there are better places to stay in Shanklin at the same price with time to plan ahead and less stuck in the 70s. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a more traditional type B&B in Shanklin this might suit.

New twin beds very comfortable, but room cramped. Shower room very poorly equipped, shaver light not working and no soap dish in shower. Breakfast efficient and adequate. Useful parking. Lovely building but needs some TLC.

We stayed for one night in a twin room which was clean, modern and comfortable, the room (4) was not large but adequate for one night. Evening meal prices were reasonable with generous portions, house wine was good and reasonably priced. Staff were faultless. Parking is limited with no on street parking.

We returned for a brief holiday after a two year absence and we’re delighted that it was exactly as we remembered. All the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast really was FULL English, and both the bedroom and lounges were clean and comfortable.
It is located about 10 minutes walk to the shops and restaurants of Shanklin Old-Town and a further 5 minutes to the seafront. But there are bus stops very close to the hotel.
It is a very comfortable and relaxing seaside hotel. We will definitely be returning

We stayed here as a family of 5 in three rooms for two nights over the bank holiday. We had nice large rooms with nice views. The hotel is clean and comfy with heaps of character. It was a nice walk into town and down to the beach. The guest lounges were nice. if you want to stay in a traditional English small hotel , for the prices charged, this is good value.
