“Edward's Grand Edifice.”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

This castle is on the Wales Coastal Path, and is free to visit. It's mostly ignored by the locals, who just take it for granted like most of the Edwardian castles. It has long been popular with local teenagers who use it for their anti-social activities, mainly after dark. Daytime visiting is free,as is the nearby car park, with wonderful views of the Dee estuary and its bird life. No point looking back at the town. Nothing worth looking at there. Unfortunately, those travelling along the main A548 coast road get no view of the castle, just shops and the highest multi-storey flats in the whole of North Wales.

“Interesting castle and beautiful views!”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Visited Flint Castle as part of a brief visit to North Wales.

I really liked the castle - granted, the town looks a little out of place when you turn back and look at it from the castle, but that's not the attraction. (And all of the locals that we met were very friendly!)

The castle is a ruin, but you can have a good look around it and use your imagination to picture it! We couldn't access the outer bailey as it was locked but I would love to return in Summer sometime when it might be open! If you have a look around the outside of the castle too, you will see where the tidal moat began and where the water levels have been throughout time.

In addition to the castle itself, there are lovely views over the River Dee, and also a nice walk along the riverbank, although we didn't stray too far.

Overall, I would say definitely worth a visit. We didn't encounter anyone drinking or being disruptive, but we visited at about 11am on a Sunday morning, so perhaps visit at a similar time if this is a concern. :)
