“Absolute Disgraceful”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Booking our family into this hotel for the weekend was a huge mistake. Their first visit to East Lothian they were given one room which had not been cleaned, no bed linen on the bed, no duvet cover on the duvet and used tea and coffee mugs on the side. The other room was occupied by someone else, they had been given a key to a room which was occupied with someone elses belongings, laptop and suitcase!!

They went back to reception to speak to manager and was told that they had double booked a room, so they checked out and went to a nearby hotel which luckily had a vacancy. Had the management of the Bayswell done the proper thing and given them an apology and refund then it may have gone some way to mitigating the bad feeling. However he first stated that they had stayed one night (complete lie!) and then asked for proof of payment (bank statements etc etc) this went on for over four weeks before refund was finally given. No apology. This hotel and the management are a disgrace to East lothian, I would not recommend anyone stay here, if the management has the audacity to treat customers in that way. Dunbar is a wonderful town with so much to see, just please don't let it be ruined by staying at this hotel.

We apologise again and have indeed already sincerely apologised to the guests for the mix up of room keys which resulted in your relatives being shown to the wrong rooms, as explained to them the hotel was not fully booked and their reserved room were actually available.

Unfortunately the duty manager, who is no longer with us, did not manage the situation as professionally as required and also did not enable us to conclude as smooth a follow-up and refund as we would have wished.

The hotel has proudly sat in Dunbar, perched on the cliffs with unparalled views overlooking the Firth of Forth, for more than a century and continues to serve the local community and we have thousands of happy and contented customers who return to the Bayswell year on year.

This place seems to get mixed reviews - so after booking did wonder if I'd done the right thing, should not have worried from first drawing up to the hotel front all was good (not perfect but very good)

We were greeted in a friendly manor & given the keys to our room which was charming bit mixed decor wise but large comfortable with a wall mounted TV & new looking kettle (perhaps the previous review had been read and heeded) lots of tea & coffee which makes a nice change. Shower was a bit weedy however there is a booster pump that increases the flow to a decent level.

We decided to eat in the hotel and so glad we did, food was superb and very reasonably priced for what you get. The only real down point would be the breakfast one poor girl having to do everything which didn't seem fair - note to owners get more cover for the breakfast it's unfair on the poor waiting staff the way it is.

All in a very good experience could and would not fault any of the staff during our stay and much better than I was expecting after reading some other reviews. Will definitely return and would recommend it .

We stayed there in August 2013. We had a double room with a wonderful sea view. The staff were friendly, however the hotel itself is in need of a revamp, as it is very old and dated. The hotel I believe is under new management and perhaps it will take some time to get the place modernised. We would go back if changes to the decor were made.

We had a brief one night stay here recently to complete a driving holiday.

The Hotel has a superb position on the cliff face overlooking the sea and the views are stunning - especially at sunset. Our room had a lovely sea view and our room boasted a Jacuzzi which, once this technical dunce had mastered it, was fun to use,

Breakfast was ok, though the sausages tasted tangy and definitely off. Otherwise quite acceptable,

The décor in the Hotel could do with a makeover in parts, and little touches like a whole deceased tribe of daddy long legs still lying in various windows on the landings by the second day of our visit, which the staff must surely have passed by dozens of times.

As I say just minor things but otherwise pretty good.

My room is dreadful ! a double bed pushed against a wall , a TV that is from the 1800's a plastic kettle on the wall that must be at least 10 years old, no hot water...just horrible!
the food boasts of home made chips ...they were not home made, 3 types of cheese with oat cakes, I got cream crackers and was told they had run out of oat cakes!! in Scotland !! really ??
this place has the most beautiful views and great staff but that is it! such a shame... could be a great place to come back to but I wont be.

Had a most enjoyable relaxing night in a wonderful double room with sea views. Have stayed before and notice that it has been upgraded since my last visit. This seems to be ongoing at the moment and is really making a difference already! Very clean hotel the food was wonderful and staff friendly and helpful. Wifi has been upgraded and is now included in the price of your accommodation. Very close to the public swimming pool and cliff top walks this is the perfect getaway hotel. Very close to the train station and easy travel distance from Edinburgh.

With its impressive location giving unimpeded views across the Forth estuary to the Bass Rock and the shores of Fife beyond this hotel should be one of Lothian's finest. Unfortunately, it is let down by a lack of attention to detail that leads to an impression of being run-down. Our room was spacious and had evidently been refurbished to a high standard, the modern en-suite had an impressive array of lotions, shampoos etc. The only thing missing was some sort of an information pack. Access was from outside the building (through the patio doors of a lounge area then via a path); a barrier mat outside the room was hardly sufficient to cope with the trampled earth on our shoes. The lounge was somber due to its north-facing aspect and dark furnishings. The glass top to the table was not cleaned of drink drip marks during our stay.
The reception staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient but this did not carry over to the restaurant where the same people seemed forgetful and in a quandary at times. The restaurant room, a conservatory style addition, was in dark wood with dark wood Venetian blinds; the glass roof had seagull droppings clearly visible and a leak near the entrance door. The food was acceptable although 'steak & ale pie' should not be a beef casserole with a pastry lid balanced on top!!
Breakfast was bizarre. A small buffet table housed a limited range from those stated in the menu. On days when there were German guests cheese appeared and when there were French, croissants came out!! As there was only one coffee pot, coffee quickly ran out causing delays; some items on the menu were unavailable (vegetarian sausages) others (shoe-leather bacon) should have been. The made-to-order porridge was excellent.
Outside there is ample parking and a seating area but the grass could have been cut, the tables treated and parasols maintained. Attention to leaking downspouts and a lick of paint would not be amiss.
The hotel is an easy 1 km walk from the railway station from where central Edinburgh is only 25 minutes away. Make sure you get on at the front of the train as, being a mainline, seat availability is limited.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel have the sea views.
