As soon as we arrived at the hotel we were warmly greeted by Christine who told us that due to DIY work next to the room we had booked we had been upgraded to a bigger room at no extra charge. We were given lots of information about what to do in the local area, as well as recommendations for local restaurants and eateries. The room itself was lovely; very light, airy and tastefully decorated with a great view of the sea, with all amenities you would need (including very nice fluffy towels!). Breakfast was fantastic - with a varied choice from Full English to fresh fruit and muesli, all very fresh. Overall I would highly recommend Amber House, we had a very enjoyable stay.

Occasionally rooms need some small repair - sometimes there is unintentional damage - and we do not like leaving it and try to get it resolved as soon as possible to maintain our high standards. So in this instance we felt you may be disturbed by a little noise so were quite happy to be able to upgrade you to a luxury room. And you obviously enjoyed your stay here at Amber House. So thank you so much for taking the time to review us.

Thank you so much for your lovely review. You know you are always most welcome to return - yet again! The snack-bar was new for this year and is going so well we have now added a fridge for cold drinks and fresh milk. Glad you appreciated it.

Had a 'rushed' visit to the town. Met be welcoming, friendly staff who accomodated to dietry requirments professionaly and reliably (Coeliacs - nothing to worry about). Food - the variety, quality and quantity of breakfast was more than sufficient to last until night whereupon the staff can direct you to a variety of sources. Will be in the town again and have already prov/bk'd.

Thank you for your review. I'm finding it difficult to respond as you seem to have had a really good stay and came back but only gave us 4 for all categories and no indication what was amiss - if anything. We always strive to give our guests the experience that they should expect from a four star guest house.

I travelled to Devon to do a course at Dartington Estate and I wanted accommodation close by but also near to the sea. Amber House fulfilled those requirements perfectly. The hotel is situated 5 minutes walk from the sea. I stayed in Cove room which is a single room on the ground floor. On arrival I was greeted with a warm welcome from Christine. The room was clean and quiet and well equipped. As my course was starting early I asked for an early breakfast which was no trouble at all. The breakfast was superb and the dining room very pleasant with a view over the garden. I left Amber House feeling throughly refreshed.

We are pleased the Cove room met you requirements so well. As a single room it does attract a lot of interest from people who are on business, on courses like yourself or are on solo breaks or visiting family - it doesn't break the budget. And like you so rightly point out - the rest of the facilities and breakfast are the same quality as for those guests who pay more for larger or more luxurious rooms. It is encouraging that you chose us when you came on your course. Many thanks for your review.

Thank you so much for your comprehensive and positive review. It was such a shame about the weather when you were here. I am writing this towards the end of the season ( which has been extremely busy for us) and am delighted to say that due to the fantastic weather later in the year we invested in more outside furniture for the garden. So on future visits you will be able to sit out and enjoy the sunshine!

We have just returned from a three-day trip to Paignton where we stayed at Amber House. We travelled by train, so were pleased to find that it was just a short walk from the station. From the outside, Amber house is beautiful (even in the pouring rain we arrived in!) and we were greeted promptly by Chris who gave us loads of info related to our trip. She then showed us to the room we'd booked (Coast) which was beautifully decorated. However, we had discussed on the train that we would like to upgrade to the Bay View room and Chris very happily showed us this room instead. We were blown away by what a lovely room Bay View is! The decor is gorgeous and the view was great so we chose to pay extra for it (and it was definitely worth it!) Chris brought up a flask of fresh milk for tea/coffee too, which was a lovely touch. The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet. I will just point out that it was very bright through the curtains in the mornings - not an issue for us but it might be worth considering if your sleep tends to be affected by light.

Amber House has a gorgeous garden but due to the rubbish weather we weren't able to sit outside at all which was a shame. There is also a pretty extensive DVD collection that we enjoyed using - the rooms have DVD players. Our room was cleaned daily and the teas/coffees/biscuits refreshed. The couple staying in the room next to ours had their dog with them, but with the exception of one short bark, we didn't hear a peep, or even see the dog - which I was a little disappointed about as I am a huge dog fan! The breakfasts (my boyfriend's favourite part of the day!) were great. A really good choice of dishes, and very tasty. I'm not a big eater at breakfast but there were yoghurts, cereals, porridge and fruit available as well as cooked.

The rooms (and outside the dining room) have a folder with information about the local restaurants which served us well. As we didn't bring the car, we had to rely on public transport or restaurants within walking distance so this information was important. We had fantastic meals at The Elephant in Torquay (£10ish in a taxi) and The Ganges (an Indian restaurant in Paignton, about 15 minutes walk from Amber House). We would recommend getting the steam train and ferry to Dartmouth and a visit to Torquay (£3.60 return on the train, and reachable by bus).

Overall, we had a fantastic stay at Amber House. Chris was attentive and friendly - it really felt like nothing was too much trouble for her. We didn't meet Lloyd until our final morning but he was equally friendly! The only thing we would change about the trip was that we would bring the car. We would love to stay again another time - but perhaps with more sun (and maybe our dogs!) Thank you very much!

Room Tip: Bay View is gorgeous but bright in the mornings. We would recommend this room. Coast has a lower ce...

I love the way you say that Amber House is still beautiful in the rain! Thank you so much for the lovely review. Bay View is a lovely room - it is a double bed but for more space and a king-sized bed people may like to choose Tall Ships. However, the bed in Bay View faces directly onto the bay so you can lay in bed and watch activities on the water or even the sunrise over the Bay as some people do.

Booked as a birthday surprise for my wife, but I felt "pampered". As a coeliac it is very difficult to find locations that understand the condition. Amber house go over and above usual availability and even provide print outs of restaurants cafes etc in the area that cater for the condition. Rooms excellent, towels large and fluffy. Lots of other special little touches.

Room Tip: Bay View has a bay window and views across to Brixham

Many thanks for your review. We continue to get excellent feedback from our coeliac guests - and many also contribute to our pooling of information about places to eat that are clued up about gluten-free food and offer a good GF menu. We now have a dedicated Gluten-free page on our website. I think coeliac's paradise just about sums it up!
