“Beautiful castle, shame no food”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Visited Compton Castle for the first time today as it was thoroughly recommended by our son. Not disappointed, fairytale building with the most beautiful restoration work carried out over the last fifty years. Only a few rooms but if you really take your time to look and listen then there is much to be learnt and enjoyed. However, it could really do with its own tearooms which would be a real money spinner. We visited the Castle Barton Restaurant opposite and were very disappointed. Very rundown albeit, beautiful house in fabulous setting. The inside is a real blast from the past and not in a good way. Reminded me of boarding houses in the early sixties and the staff appeared to wish to be anywhere but there. Food very mediocre. They really do need a turnaround from Alex Polizzi, the Hotel Inspector from tv. Next time I go I'll be taking a picnic.

Thank you for your kind words, so pleased that you managed to learn about our intriguing history at Compton. That is a shame about Castle Barton Restaurant, unfortunatly we do not run it so all we can do is pass your comments on. Hopefully we will see you again soon on a day with good weather so you can picnic in the orchard.

“very historical”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

The castle was far more interesting than expected. It is still lived in by descendants of really famous admirals etc., including one who claimed Newfoundland for this country. The gardens were interesting too. The downside was the approach via really narrow lanes with few passing places. Avoid traveling when others are driving to or from work.

Happy to hear that you found Compton interesting, unfortunatly we can't do anything about the lanes. As you said it's best to avoid times when people are travelling to or from work.

“Family trip”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Its not bad we are members and therefore it was free to visit, if I am honest if I had paid I would have been disappointed. The gardens seemed quite good but to be honest they were difficult to enjoy because of the torrential rain, probably better to visit if the weather is better.

“Interesting house and garden”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

This is one of those "still a family home" National Trust properties which is quite clearly used a such. Therefore some parts are private and not open to the public, but some aspects of the public areas have signs of being used for family life. The garden is very lovely and worth sitting in for a while on a nice day.

So glad to see that you loved the architecture and the gardens. I hope you can visit again - the rose garden is at its best in June.
