“Very Good Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2011

Stayed on the two night deal which is excellant value for the money. All the staff were very helpful and friendly they had a wedding party in but they still looked after us.The room was newly decorated to a high standart and the food was good. The hotel is a stroll away from Wigan town center which is a very good shopping location with nice small shops markets and a shopping center or two. The saying is you get what you pay for but we got a lot more than we paid for it was fantastic. Thank you to the management and all the staff that worked the B/H weekend.

The Hotel has just finished its refurbishment as was evident by the smell of fresh paint. We too were on a deal for our stay (we have done the same deal at other Mercure Hotels). The hotel was very quiet, with few guests, which made the staff attentive to us, with quick and efficient service. The restaurant provided ok food but the choice was a bit limited. There was ample seating to have after dinner drinks including a nice conservatory area. The bedrooms are of standard hotel size but with bathrooms slightly larger than average. The beds were very comfortable and the room clean. A five minute walk takes you into town with some nice arcade style shops if you seek them out. If you need a quiet break away from the hustle of every day life try here.

I have stayed at Mercure Hotels in Bristol and was very pleased to find one of the same chain in Wigan. What a complete disappointment. The person on the reception desk wasn't exactly rude, but seemed rather bored and wasn't very welcoming at all. Due to a delay on the train from London I arrived at 8:45pm. By the time I checked in it was 8:50pm. On enquiring about dinner I was told the restaurant stopped taking orders at 8:45pm but to ask the waiter. I spoke to the waiter who said an exception couldn't be made as the kitchen equipment was switched off. So I ordered a sandwich and dropped my stuff off at my room. Came back down and found hot food being delivered to two people in the restaurant. Yes they were there before me, but wasn't the equipment turned off already? Also the bar/restaurant can't take cards so you have to pay at reception. Anyway, the hotel itself was a bit like a building site as someone else here described. There were some trip hazards around in the corridors. There is a horrible damp smell in the corridor leading to the stairs. My room was basic but ok. The bathroom had no hot water. Very disappointing.

Have just returned from a very enjoyable weekend at Wigan Oak Hotel. There were 8 of us in total, 4 couples, each couple paying £158 for 2 nights bed, breakfast, lunch, 2-course dinner and free bar from 7 til 11. We found the deal on Travelzoo.
We didn't expect luxury for the price we paid but were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were modern and comfortable, having just been refurbished (refurbishment was still going on, on another floor but it didn't spoil anything for us)
The rest of the hotel was equally comfortable and all the staff very helpful and friendly. Franco, our waiter at dinner really looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble for him! Would definitely return!!
