Description: Gourmet Spot is one of Durham's finest and boldest restaurants, that has earned plaudits locally and nationally. Specialising in innovative and imaginative cuisine using the best British produce wherever possible with a modern European approach, offering a very popular 7-course tasting menu, daily a la carte and market menu to its customers. Head Chef Stephen Hardy takes great care in keeping the menus seasonal and tries to source as many ingredients as possible locally, within a 30 mile radius. Opening its doors in 2007, recognition and awards have flooded in, with the most prestigious coming from the industry gurus at Restaurant Magazine who awarded Gourmet Spot the Best Dessert in Britain prize. More recently the restaurant has been Michelin recommended in 2012 guide and achieved the TasteDurham 2012 award for highest quality assured and local produce champion for the 4th year running. Being situated far enough from the city's main drinking areas has also added to Gourmet Spot's mystique and exclusivity as peace is guaranteed. The restaurant provides the widest selection of wines in Durham City, as well as an array of spirits in its cosy bar area. Gourmet Spot is attached to the four-star Guest House Farnley Tower, so it carries the attractive Restaurant with Rooms cachet, very popular with couples. Being linked to the hotel means that there are extensive facilities for groups too. The venue has proved popular with businesses, staff training, team building, weddings and christenings.

I went with a group of 4 people, we each tried a different menu and the were all great. We loved all the extra courses we were given. We all agreed on the great friendly service and the quality of the food.

Just as the chandelier in the centre of the dining room is dusty and has lost it's sparkle, so has The Gourmet Spot. Food and service are just not up to the standard you would expect. Like so many restaurants it appears to be trading on its past glory. Be careful if you are planning a special occasion, you may leave disappointed. I will not return.

We visited in Dec for a birthday treat. The food isn't your usual run of the mill restaurant menu-we described it as more of an experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the inventive menu and had a lovely bottle of red to wash down our meal.We would definitely visit again, great service and bustlying atmosphere,

My wife and I ate here on New Year's Eve 2012 and had a great time. The service was excellent from the point of arrival and throughout our meal, good wine and the food was fantastic, well presented with lovely combinations of flavour and texture. The restaurant lives up to its name "The Gourmet Spot".

Supposed to be the highlight of a 2 days out with my wife the Gourmet spot probably fell just a little short. While I can recommend the quality of food and service, I found the menu to be slightly inhibiting. There was certainly very little atmosphere which made the evening slightly flat. The price of the meal was on the high side for what it was and it is always annoying to see such a high service charge - 12.5 percent in this case added to the bill with a note saying this is optional so can be deducted if we want (in an establishment like this the price of the food should reflect the service charge and anything else should be at the patrons discretion)
