“Rural idyll”
Reviewed May 31, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

We had a wonderful week at butterfly cottage ,this cottage is set in a very rural location .the views across the valley from the deck are lovely ,as was the welcome from owners Bruce and Anita who live next door ,they provided us with freshly baked bread, flowers, chocolates and wine this was such a treat after a long drive.
The area of Weardale is very rural but by no means isolated as many attractions are within a half hour drive including Durham, Newcastle ,Hadrians wall, and many fantastic walks direct from the cottage :).
The cottage is very clean and very comfortable with modern bathroom and super comfy bed , which was offered with either hypo allergenic bedding or feather/down ..a nice touch .
There are a number of pubs and restaurants in the area and Stanhope (8miles) has a great chippy .
We would highly recommend a holiday/break here as you can combine the tranquility of the dales with the cosmopolitan ambiance of the North East big cities ..

We are pleased you had such a good time. We are lucky in the Dale to now have a growing range of restaurants, cafes and take aways to recommend to guests and yes the fish and chip shop in Stanhope is very good!!

“Stunning scenery”
Reviewed May 31, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Butterfly Cottage is a superb setting for a quiet, peaceful getaway for two, with stunning views of Weardale. The cottage is cosy and comfortable with everything you need and is in the middle of great walking country. It is beautifully quiet and there is proper darkness at night. Anita and Bruce were very welcoming and helpful with enquiries about local cheese.
We had a fantastic time!!

Thank you for your glowing review. We have been told that the nearby reservoir has a darkness rating for star gazing and is one the best places to view the sky at night. We recently had the most wonderful views of the comets and milky way as the sky was so clear and there is so very little light pollution.

“Excellent cottage”

A lovely cosy, clean cottage . Welcome freshly made loaf of bread. Wonderful views and just what we needed to combine business with a short break. Visited the Killhope Lead Mine, Weardale museum and Wolsingham to trace family members.

We are so pleased you found the cottage so welcoming and many people who stay here tell us it's a great base for walking. I suppose the steepness of the hill up to the hamlet where the cottage is has the pay off of the wonderful views over the valley from the property.

Such a lovely stay with such warm welcoming people!!!

The cottage was beautiful warm and a country cottage home away from home! The area is gorgeous and a pleasure to scout on foot and drive through. We had peaceful sleeps and me and my son have fallen in love with Durham and it people. 0;o

“Beautiful cottage, very helpful hosts, excellent value”

We stayed for a birthday weekend in January. The cottage was even nicer than expected and really well appointed. Very spacious, warm (despite snowing outside!), lovely thick eider duvet, comfy sofas, posh bathroom etc. Beautiful views across the valley. The owners had even baked us some bread and left us a little gift for our arrival, and when we'd forgotten the butter they gave us a whole block to save us heading back to the shops. Lots of useful info provided including picks of favourite pubs (the food was lovely).

Only problem was that Holiday Lettings forgot to send us the directions, but the owner provided these promptly when requested.
