“Very disappointed.”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

This was a weekend we had been looking forward to for some time. It was to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and was a gift from our children.
Our welcome was off hand and we were not shown to our room but just pointed in its general direction.
We had room 6 and although disappointed with the size of the room, the shabby decor, the shower curtain hanging off and a window overlooking the bins we determined to make the best of it.
After a pleasant evening in Durham we returned to our room. We did our best to have a bath but as it was very small (we are of average size) with a spot light shining directly into your eyes it was not at all relaxing. And then to bed. It was the worst night's sleep we have ever had in a hotel! The mattress was absolutely worn out with springs sticking out and seams split with a decided dip in the middle.
We had breakfast in the beautiful dining room. The dining staff were very pleasant and breakfast well cooked but there was a very limited selection of fresh fruit with none of it chopped and ready to eat. I had a yogurt which was luke warm instead of chilled.
We then complained about our bed and we were moved to room 2 for the second night of our two night stay. A very pleasant room but had no bath. The bed, however, was much more comfortable.
Although the free wi-fi worked in room 6 it didn't in room 2.
Very disappointing on the whole and we have stayed in lots of hotels and this one really didn't feel like 4 star. Even in the rooms there was not a large selection of hot beverages - just very basic tea and coffee. No decaff or infusion teas.
During the whole of our stay we were unable to get anyone to answer the reception bell - even just to ask if there was any decaff coffee available! We were checked out by a pleasant lad who appeared to be cleaning!
We will not return and would not recommend.

Room Tip: Not room 6.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel on tuesday 18th June 2013 simply because we went to the attached Gourmet Spot restaurant (fantastic) and as it was my birthday decided to make a night of it.

The room was a nice size with wardrobe and dressing table, we were in room 7 which overlooks a road and neighbouring properties (so nothing special to look at) it had a full bathroom which was fine apart from the shower head was inadeqaute for the power of the water - flooding was inevitable when you first turned on the water as it flew upwards to the ceiling.

We had a lovely meal and returned to our room shortly after midnight. Unfortunately the person upstairs until 2:50am continually banged and walked around whilst talking to someone else in the room. We were able to sleep until 4:40 when it started all over again, I was furious and tried ringing reception - no answer, so I got dressed and went down to reception and rang the doorbell intercom for attention.

After a few moments a young foreign girl cam down and I explained the issue, she said it was her moving around and that it was an old hotel, I basically begged her to please be quiet as we just couldnt sleep. She said she would try to stop moving around as much and I returned to my room.

The noise did not stop and it sounded like she was packing and banging her case about. It went quiet at 5:50am when she left the room.

We fell off to sleep only to then be woken by a delivery driver at 6:30am who parked up at the hotel to drop things off leaving the back doors open and music blaring!!

We had set the alarm for 8:30am to go down for breakfast but could not get out of bed as was exhausted through lack of sleep so stayed in bed an extra hour before going downstairs to checkout at 10:20am

There was a young lad on reception who I tried to explain this to - but I was so exhausted I just wouldnt be bothered to be honest and didn't really feel the young lad was getting that we had probably three hours sleep all night. He said he knew who the young lass was - a student who was renting the room above me, and when I said that it sounded like she was packing her bags and banging cases around he said it sounded right. He knocked off the price of the breakfast as we hadnt had it but to be honest in hindsight I do not feel this was enough as we were both then so exhausted we had to go home to sleep - not the best end to a lovely birthday and fantastic meal at the Gourmet Spot!!

Room Tip: Room 7 has NO view and if anyone is in the room above will be creaking noises

We arrived at this hotel at 8.15 on a bank holiday Sunday and found we were LOCKED OUT. A random guest let us in and we found a typed sheet of instructions on the reception desk telling us how to find our room. The room had no heating. When my husband rang the number on the sheet there was no reply. He had a bath to try to warm up and the following morning the towel was still wet due to there being no heating in the bathroom either. Understandably we did not want to stay another night so we cancelled. The hotel imposed it’s own cancellation charge of a further £14. So that was £104 for a so-called upgrade room and breakfast. The restaurant was closed for the weekend. I have no idea why this is rated as 4* as there was no service at all. One wonders what would happen in the event of a fire. More DIY I presume

Room Tip: our upgrade room had no heating, so cant advise

We stayed three nights at Farnley Towers and enjoyed our time there. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was very comfortable with relaxing views across the lawns to the castle and old town. It's a 20 minute walk to the town centre with plenty to look at along the way. Alternatively it's a 5 minute drive and there's easy parking in the shopping centre car park. The breakfast room is light and airy - very pleasant and the cooked breakfasts were excellent. We enjoyed a 5 star dining experience in the Gourmet Spot restaurant though we felt to eat there every night might be a bit overwhelming. There are plenty of places to eat in the town centre. The key question - would we go back? Yes, without hesitation!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with views of the castle and cathedral

A strange reception area, just a desk plonked in the lobby. Room 10 had good views and was a good size but the floors creaked that much it must have disturbed anyone underneath. The mattress was far too soft, it was like being on a trampoline. The towels were folded on the bed but I always have to check. The bath towel had a hole in and the hand towel was full of what looked like make-up and I don't use it. I think it had just been refolded and not laundered at all. The bathroom was ok apart from the creaky floor. The breakfast room was lovely and the food was really good. The only fault was that my cooked breakfast was brought before I'd finished eating my cereal. We ate out in the evening but the hotel is up a quite steep hill and we had to get a taxi back as my husband has a bad knee. Don't think I would have paid to stay here but the hotel was quite busy. Our stay was a gift.

A great hotel where you are truly well looked after, great light rooms with amazing views. Lots of tea, coffee sugar and milk in the room. Wi Fi and lots of local info in room.

The breakfast room was beautiful, akin Laura Ashley will add photo.

The bar was "cosy" haha but there is plenty of room in the outside seating, great views over Durham.

Gourmet Spot Michelin recommended restaurant is through the bar, great place for a romantic meal, lovely wines and champagnes.

Room Tip: Go for a corner room (double aspect) facing towards the main lawn/Durham town for the best views.

Stayed at Farnley Tower one night, just for a nights break away.

We got room 1 at the front, right near the entrance, clean and tidy room; bit tired in places but was not expecting five stars. Could maybe do with a couple or little job fixes, and a lick of paint here and there, but overall, we have stayed in a far worse places and paid a lot more!
We didn't sample the food as restaurant closed Sundays, but had already pre booked a place in town, as that was what we had planned to do, food looked a tad fancy for me lol, bit of a Steak n chips guy.

The room itself was clean and tidy, ample tea and coffee etc, and everything worked as it should, floors creak a bit, but this is an old property with a lot of character and that is to be expected really. We arrived back after midnight and the reason we got the front room near entrance is because we smoke and didn’t want to disturb others popping in and out all the time. Heard a couple of people arriving back after us with the squeaking floors but again, expected that, and wasn’t really an issue.

Room itself was lovely and warm, maybe a bit too warm but opening a window solves that, better than being freezing cold.

Breakfast was a lovely full English fry up and it was, poached eggs to perfection, with lovely bacon and sausages, unfortunately a bit too much for the wife to manage so cannot complain about portion sizes.

Overall a lovely place to stay, and definitely one that I will be keeping in the favourites list for another stop over, bit of a steep walk from town, especially if you have had a few pints but taxi only cost a fiver and well worth it, not to be stuck in the town itself, well worth a visit in my eyes!

Room Tip: We stayed in room one as we smoke, no issues at all being near the entrance
