Do not choose room 3, the mattresses are so tired they have put sponge toppers and blankets on top and still they are awful and creak all night, also the plumbing is dreadful, when you flush the toilet it makes an horrendous noise. The breakfast was good and the location is fine but it is very over-priced. Having said that there is a very good bus service nearby if you don't want to use your car and we found this most useful, especially since we have bus passes. I don't know what the other rooms are like because we didn't have the opportunity to see any or indeed talk to anyone about the beds. Judging by the comments in the visitors book most people seem to have had comfortable beds, lucky them, they can't have been in room 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although one response I saw was written in Japanese so difficult to say. I wouldn't stay here again as I think it's overpriced for what it is, it's tired and the only good thing about the room was it was spacious, the voile type curtain in the bathroom was mouldy at the bottom and upon arriving we were told the towels weren't dry and they would be put in later. Then we noticed one of the bottom sheets on one of the beds hadn't been ironed, it was all creased. Not good value for money.

My friend and I stayed in the hotel as part of the Nirvana package for the Great North Run. The staff were great and made us feel very welcome, assisting with our queries including booking a meal up the road as the restaurant was full. Our room was clean, spacious and light, with comfy beds. We appreciated that they stocked up on fruit and porridge for their running guests (practically the whole hotel) and even left a mini mars bar on our breakfast table which was handy just before the run!
Yes, the road is pretty steep and the package overall was not cheap (including transfers to the race but def took the stress out of it all). However, it was nice to stay somewhere which was not the anonymous chain style hotel and the staff really made it. I am usually very fussy about hotels and it takes a lot for me not to find fault, so well done Farnley Tower!

Good location with good views of and an easy walk into the city. However, the hotel seemed past its best. The room was spacious and comfortable, but there was no attenetion to detail. The mould on the sealant around the bath was rather off putting. There were no staff to welcome you and staff that we actually saw could have been more smarlty dressed, particularly when serving breakfast. Disappointing to return from a good day in the city to find the room had not been attended to. Breakfast was not the best and the stay was rather pricey.

We picked this Hotel because of the good offers with Booking. Com and the photos made it look really good!
This Hotel is up a steep hill however you can catch a bus, use a taxi or Drive as Durham has lots of places to park. The building is very impressive and we received a lovely welcome when we arrived. Our room overlooked the garden and we could see the Cathedral, the bed was comfy, the bathroom ok but became like a sauna very quickly and perhaps the edge of the bath could do with some new mastic. I agree with other reviews that the walls were thin, so thin that we heard the snoring from the next bedroom, many noises were other guests and the way heavy fire doors were left to bang! Breakfast was ok most mornings , a little chaotic on Saturday morning, maybe short staffed?perhaps we have all watched the Hotel Inspector too much! The best thing about this Hotel was the staff, who were always friendly and trying to do their best, I probably would stay again!

Nice large room and nice views yes. And pretty clean too. But I really do not expect to be bothered at 2:30 am by the sound of loud music coming from ... the manager's flat! Which just happened to be above our heads. I couldn't do anything at the time because the room information contained no details of any internal emergency telephone number, and I wasn't about to start padding around the hotel in my dressing gown to try and find someone. It was only in the morning that I found out that it was actually the manager who lived in the flat about our room. But even if you're fortunate to stay there on a night the manager is having a quieter time of it, you'll probably still find it pretty noisy because, as others have said, the walls are pretty thin. Breakfast was a bit of an experience too. Oh yes, and one of the legs was falling off the bed.
